Oh, and another thing to note is that the Riddler is, indeed, back with his collectibles. Though this time they actually put a story to it beyond "I'm a psycho going around planting trophies all over this place!" Now he's got a plan that involves leaking a massive amount of information that will essentially throw Gotham into absolute chaos, so it's up to you to find these data packs strewn about the city.
Does the game still have "puzzles" to get the Riddler collectables like AC? One of the things I loved about AC was the Riddler trophies that required thinking to get instead just requiring say a new gadget to break a wall like it was in AA.
Afraid not. It's Christmas Ever, it's a huge blizzard, and a mandatory curfew is in effect. Anyone on the streets is fair game to beat for a beat-down.
It seemed like even when you countered at the right time, he still hurt you. He also does quite a fair amount of damage and you don't do jack shit for damage until the the little quick time events. I understand it's supposed to be challenging but there's a difference between fun and challenging and just plain frustrating.
I was sceptical about this game, especially since Arkham City was somewhat disappointing, but I'll probably pick it up since people are saying it's such a big game, so a £20 buy might be worh it instead of waiting it to drop under £5.
Yea... I think we may have but the point still stands. You didn't need to in Asylum. I played Asylum, then City, then Asylum 2 or 3 more times. I just like that game. So my memory may be rusty.
Nope, you actually had to double-tap A/X in Arkham Asylum as well (and I'm positive because I last played it only two days ago). It's because you run by holding down A/X, and they didn't want to risk players accidentally diving forward when all they wanted to do was move at a decent speed. You'd think by now it would have occurred to someone to make Batman run automatically and only walk when the analogue stick is slightly tilted, freeing up the A/X button for evading.
OP: You mentioned the game world feels a lot more open than in Arkham City in large part because there's no giant walls sealing you in. Does that mean that Origins's world is meant to be the entirety of Gotham City? Because even with a playable area twice the size of Arkham City's, that's still rather small for all of Gotham, and it seems rather limiting to hypothetical future installments.
Im liking the game so far (couple of hours in) but I have to echo RJ 17 about the level up system.
Having to level up both sides of armour just to unlock the combat reduction is annoying. Im also finding lots of bugs at the minute, although I'm unsure if they are bugs or a potentially sequence break but there is a wall grate I can't climb in and its the only way out of a locked room.
The grapple mechanic doesn't seem as fluid as the previous game either. It often latches on to lower ledges when I'm attempting to glide across the city.
The crime scene investigations on the other hand are great although I've only done 3 at this time.
I've noticed the occasional thug slide across the floor to deliver a punch and some clipping issues with fighting near walls
From what I've seen so far in the game the above spoilers are wrong.
Black mask is still alive, its his body double in Lacey Towers. The Joker was pretending to be the Penguin to start a gang war.
Im liking the rogue gallery and the various challenges although it took be a long time to do the grapple boost attack.
I'm heading to a friends house tonight to give it a shot so i'll report back in a few days. Hope the combat has been tweaked to make it harder, those first 2 games are fun but in no way challenging (with the exception of the extreme combo challenges, can't remember the real name). Are the challenges still there? Wonder if i can do them all first time like Arkham city with Catwoman
Arrrrgh. Ran into an Annoying game breaking bug. At a point where I'm trying to hack into a police mobile relay, but when the decrypter is out there is nothing to decrypt. If you exit the decrypter the game freezes. Tried doing other side missions and then coming back to this point in the main storyline but keep running into it. Anyone else experiencing it?
Regarding the interrogations: You actually have to finish the enemy before being able to interrogate him, which is an odd system. I much preferred City's way of "finish everyone but this guy off to interrogate." Now you take them all down without bothering to watch who you're fighting.
Firstly it feels like AC reskinned. The city despite being an actual city - not a closed off prison - feels more lifeless than the previous game. Even if you accept the premise of it being Christmas Eve, Villains on the loose and a snowstorm, you would still expect to see a sprinkling of civilians. But there are literally none, and this makes the whole environment feel fake.
The game is far more restrictive and poorly designed too: I'd estimate that there are less than a quarter of the number of things you can grapple onto - despite devs talking about how much more verticality what there is is severely limited. This is not just restricted to outside but inside too. Even though Rocksteady's interiors were quite linear they skillfully crafted them so if it was realistically viable for Batman to grapple to a point it was allowed. In AO the interiors are painfully linear, and when they do give you a more open space you wont be allowed to grapple to anywhere above ground level because you have to keep going along the solitary path - you literally have no choices of how to approach situations.
I'm not a big graphics nazi but the production values (PS3) are not good: textures look unconvincing, shadows and lighting constantly appears and disappears, Batman can walk right through npcs and I've had some major slowdown.
The AI has taken a step back with thugs not reacting to thrown baterangs hitting wall right next to them or a flying barrel whizzing past them.
The only things that I really like are the addition of the Batcave (although for some reason you can only fast travel to and from it) and the general feel and pace of combat which feels more brutal, slightly slower, less time to counter and generally more like the recent films than the comic-book feel of the previous games.
All in all playing AO is really like many of you may have imagined: a much less refined version of what came before. If all you wanted from this is another chance to play as Batman, aren't concerned with how familiar it all feels and don't care about the details or freedom in RS's games then I think you'll still enjoy it.
