So, I'm just curious what the gaming populous thinks. What is your favorite art style in games? Anything from dirty sci-fi (i.e. the original Star Wars trilogy), clean sci-fi (i.e. the test chambers in Portal), Steampunk, Cyberpunk, natural, medieval, anything.

Speaking for myself, I'm a big fan of both dirty sci-fi and steampunk designs.

I tend to like the storybook art style in games like Fable. Its just so pretty to look at, despite it shoving bloom in your face. But still nice, colorful, and fun.

Not a fan of the "photo-realistic" art styles though.

Personally, I like Dirty/Clean Sci-fi, Steampunk, and retro (Specifically, the stuff from the 1950's)

I absolutely loved the semi-steampunk highly-stylized nature of the Thief series, especially the cinematic and promotional work.

Game itself looked like crap, even when it was first released it was never particularly impressive visually, although the shadows were considered pretty advanced for their time and the sound-design and AI still outmatch many games being made today.

My favorite style so far was the one in Valkyria Chronicles. It looked so beautiful.

Say what you want, the Grey/brown trend doesn't bother me much, I actually liked it in Killzone 2 and inFamous. That being said, I like it when cellshaded can be pulled off right (Such as TF2), if HL2 counts as Dirty Sci-Fi then that as well.

Mother fucking Fable. It looks like a storybook come to life. Not the shitty ass second one, but the first one. Oakvale is so beautiful.

Also, American McGee's Alice is incredibly disturbing.

Okami.

[/thread]

In terms of commonly used art styles though... I guess anything abnormal. Okami, the upcoming Zelda game... anything well-done and out of the ordinary.

Clean Sci-Fi is probably my favorite, specifically Mass Effect 1. I also love the retro style of Bioshock and Fallout.

My favorite art style in any game has to be the one in BlazBlue Continuum shift, a fighter with 2D characters but beautiful 3D backgrounds, awesome!

I like Silent Hill 2's visual style. I'm into urban exploring, and the abandoned buildings in that game reminded me of a lot of places I've been to.
