I want a Naughty Bear-esque game.

That is...I want it cutesy visually and insanely violent gameplay wise.

But my most interest is not with textures or shaders but LIGHT, how rooms are lit, transparency, occlusion, reflection and diffusion...
Unfortunately full physics based lighting is not something you can pull off in realtime yet.
Well, that would be asking for perfection.

I'm just asking for further evolution towards that ideal, though my understanding of computer graphics is that it IS light, realistic appropriation of light, which is what is needed to cross the "uncanny valley".

I just want to be able to walk into a dark room in a game and see by the shimmering reflective surfaces and then shine a light, glass diffracting, refracting and reflecting light. It doesn't have to be realistic, I'd be keen even for a highly stylised view.

I look forward to the first game to really crack this, that is able to have actual light in a game... rather than a collection of tricks to give the illusion of the game actually having photons and reflection. I think PS3 is closest to this... closer than even PC gaming (which is a bit too concerned in pure pixel pumping).

I'm not much of an art guy but umm I want more steampunk games. Does steampunk count as an art style?

I always liked the Paper Mario art style and the light-heartness of its games. Also the fact that an art style like this keeps it from looking dated.

Anyone else remember XIII? I'd love to see another game that looks like that one.
Second time I quoted you tonight. Yeah XIII was awesome. Came into this thread just to see what everyone else was saying but I gotta agree here. I also remember an old game where you played a guy in a comic book and you were actually inside the frames. The game wasn't too great but the idea was cool.

Maybe something akin to Impressionist art works, I think that would look pretty cool in the right genre.

Step 1: Take the visual style of Final Fantasy VI.
Step 2: Make it fully 3D and smoothe but still simulating the same expressive characters and awesome-ass enemies.
Step 3: Refrain from referencing that one South Park episode with the underpants gnomes.

Chris Foss influenced stuff. Think 1970's airbrushed sci-fi airbrushed spaceships in bright primary colours with racing stripes.

Yeah. Definitly we need more Cell-Shaded HD graphics.

Like Prince of Persia. Everytime I play this game without the land Corrupted, I drool. Don't believe me?

Firefall (PC) by Red 5 (Blizzard defectors):

I'd definitely love to see a Wiener Secession inspired game (Schiele and friends).

Something like Wind waker? Which probably won't happen as it was met with such vitriol.

Some more painterly or watercolour styles of shading and texture, kind of like what I'm working on at the moment, but in 3D!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the art style of Valkyria Chronicles. It was almost the first time that the style of the art direction caught me rather than trying to see how HD the graphics were.

I heard they toned it down in the sequel though.
