http://www.kdvr.com/news/kdvr-arvada-police-arrest-11yearold-over-inappropriate-stick-figure-drawing-20110221,0,7099823.story

An 11-year-old, who was told to draw out his frustrations rather than act out his anger in class was arrested for drawing a violent stick-figure picture in which he shoots his teacher.

I have my opinion, but I'd like to hear from everyone else on whether or not I'm being too lenient/ reactionary.

At what point does it constitute real threat, and at what point does it become a suppression of free speech? When does the school and (American) justice system go too far?

Oh shit, oh shit! I've gotta hide my stash, stat!
Nah, just kidding. I don't live in the US.

That's really really silly. Like, stupidly so.

Edit: I think I've drawn literally thousands of drawings of various people getting killed. It's bloody harmless. Even today, when I am largely over stick figures, practically all my drawings at least contain a weapon some way.

Also, I wonder how long it'll take before we'll see the "controversial" troll-scapists coming out and saying the school/police were in the right.

What the fuck? Really? As if being arrested isn't going to traumatise the kid...

Just seems excessive. So he drew a picture...can't believe the police actually bothered to investigate something so unimportant.

So what now he can't obviously draw and get his frustration out in school in a productive manner, what happens if he has to keep everything in and then snaps.

This is redonkulous, seriously.
He was told to do something to help him cope, so they arrest him, cost his family a load of money and probably mess him up even more.

Way to go.

i used to love drawing big stick figure wars when i was younger, not because im a violent messed up person, but because

1.it was easy
2.could use my imagination
3.it was FUN!

OT: thats ridiculous, he's not harming anyone by doing so

The police eh? Cause of a stick figure?

You mean after decades of teaching the profession still hasn't figured out how to answer to this sort of thing that's been going on since students were given things to draw with and something to draw on?

Between columbine and 9/11 it's like you guys completely lost your marbles down there. Everyone's so god damn afraid of everything.

This makes me sick. Police are causing psychological damage to a kid who is already being treated for issues. He was following advice from this therapist. He didn't even DISRUPT class. This pisses me off to no end.

People are way too easily butthurt, and need to get lives. Obviously these police have nothing better to do than to torment children. Hate!

Lolwut? What kind of asinine system is this?
And just out of curiosity. How can this cost anything to the parents? Is there really any countries today where you have to PAY to be taken by the police? Even BEFORE you get a sentence? (Not talking about fines btw)

I'm pissed now, and I'll be even more pissed, when nobody does anything to redeem this...this...
I don't even know what to call it.

Outrage of human rights! Not only is this flat out illegal (to my understanding of censorship) but down right over blown and disgusting!

Yes that is the perfect thing to do to the eleven year old kid. I used to do that when I was a kid. I would draw all sorts of violence. Mostly cuz it was easy to draw. That and I was a kid, I liked pretend violence. This is ridiculous.

Ok, that's it, someone needs shooting.

Not the kid, not the teacher - the absolute arsehole who decided this was a good idea.

That's the dumbest thing I've heard all day (other than a friend telling me the Dragon age 2 trailer was better than the Dead Island one.)
I used to draw stick figure's killing each other all the time!

*gets a pair of hipster glasses and restyles hair for maximum douche-potential*

I was into violent stick figures back when the cavemen did them. You know, with proper tools instead of all this lame 'paper'. Someone needs to tell this kid he is so not as avant-garde as he thinks. Totally gauche.

In all seriousness, though, this is the absolute dumbest thing I've heard all month. The kid only did what they told him to and it's not like he's actually committed any act of physical violence. Seriously, what did the teacher expect him to draw? Him giving her an angry hug?

And what's up with him getting motherflipping arrested for this? Yeah, that's a good way to deal with an angry kid: antagonize him.

I would like to applaud the show of restraint by the teacher and the police in this situation.

Anyone else would have utilized a tactical nuke, minimum.
