But I've done this all my life. Far worse than this. But I live in England, so the only trouble I got in was not paying attention to class.

damn.
poor kid, i guess this´ll ruin his therapy, since he trusted his therapist that drawing this would be the right way to vent out frustration. not only that, it´ll damage his relationship with his teacher and friends. this is the most irresponsible piece of police work ever.

What the hell America!? The kid was 11 year old! It's not like they can express there feelings clearly.

Hell, I should have been arrested to as a kid too then as I draw some stickfigure battle with guns, robots, ninjas you name it.

Damn it! Why are people so fucking stupid!?

Talk about giving the kid mixed messages:

"Try using art to deal with your anger issues. Just draw whatever comes to mind."

"Oh my God, this kid with anger issues drew a violent picture with crude stick figures! ARREST THE SCUM!"

Yeah, like that won't cause further emotional issues or anything.

EDIT: I just remembered the chorus from an old schoolyard song my mother (yes, my mother) used to sing when she was a kid back in the '60s. It was a variant of the timeless parody "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory of the Burning of the School:"

Glory, glory hallelujah,
Teacher hit me with a ruler,
I hid behind the door with a loaded .44,
And there ain't no teacher no more.

Now of course she didn't really mean it, nor did any of the other multitude of students at her school. It was just a dumb song they'd sing. Good thing she didn't grow up nowadays though, or they would have thrown away the key.

I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that a kid who's drawing extremely violent pictures at 11 should be looked at with scrutiny. Not arrested, but he certainly should have his parents be aware of things and be told things to look out for in sociopaths.

If he was actually arrested and charged with anything, that would be stupid. If he were suspended or expelled, unless he actually got violent, that would be stupid.

But drawings can be warning signs, and it's not silly to make sure the kid is getting any treatment he might be needing

An 11-year-old, who was told to draw out his frustrations rather than act out his anger in class was arrested for drawing a violent stick-figure picture in which he shoots his teacher.

I have my opinion, but I'd like to hear from everyone else on whether or not I'm being too lenient/ reactionary.

At what point does it constitute real threat, and at what point does it become a suppression of free speech? When does the school and (American) justice system go too far?
It ALWAYS goes too far. I used to live in America, and got arrested and expelled and sent to juvenile delinquency after I made a joke about killing the person sat next to me. The "zero tolerance" policy in America clearly doesn't work when people like this kid and me were punished for being jackasses, while other kids can go around shooting people. Here's what a lot of Americans never get (in my experience):

1) It's not all black and white. There are grey areas that "zero tolerance" doesn't represent

2)Alternative doesn't mean opposite. I may have an alternative political view or fashion sense or whatever, but that doesn't mean that I'm contesting yours. Especially in politics over there, the concept of left and right wing is mentally applied as though they are sides of a set of scales, which simply isn't true.

3) Freedom doesn't exist, especially not in the way that you guys think it does. Freedom is absolute, what you have isn't. Instead of removing that freedom from somebody by ruining his life, why don't you remove the freedom of gun owners, thereby saving lives.

Anyway... enough ranting. Is that a Mirrormask avatar? If so, you are full of win

I remember when I was in Primary School I would draw pictures with immense amounts of blood in them, oddly enough my teacher found them funny.

But that? What a strange/stupid world we live in.

I think the bigger question is how can they justify changing there minds. They alreadu concuded he was fine.

Hummm...I hear quite a few things like this...maybe if the next time it happens everyone needs to spam the institute in question with WHY letters...if it is done a few times I am sure people will stop taking things too far.

Seriously.

I just. God damn.

Just let kids be kids. Don't try to make them work out there problems in adult ways, and don't slap adult punishments on them. The absurdity of this makes my brain hurt, and my blood boil. It's simple to understand. Boys are rowdy and like violence.

Let boys be boys.

I used to draw entire stick armies fighting each other, I had a red pen so I could even draw in some blood. I was never arrested but then again this is England.

I can only imagine an interview with the cops : "That damn 11 year old dangerous terrorist bastard, we've been monitoring him for hours but now we've finally got the proof we need to put this scumbag behind bars for good, what we have here is a incriminating piece of paper on which this little criminal is planning an assassination of his school's teacher, truly terrible, god only knows what would have happened if we wouldn't have found it in time. But don't worry people of Arvada, your teachers are safe again from this terrorist menace "

Ye ... some people say this seems excesive, no ... this is fucking retarded, it's stupid plain and simple STUPID, you do not arrest a 11 year old kid for that, I just ... I ... my mind just can't comprehend what went through the minds of the teacher and police officers, it doesn't make sense, how ? why ? what ?... what normal person does this ? the teacher should have just had a talk with the kid and be over with it, I mean that is part of the job description of a teacher, kids are kids and they'll do stuff like this, it's mostly harmless.. not to be encouraged yes, but arrested .. wtf ?

In the end this will cause more harm then good tot the kid and I expect him to actually plan out the murder of his teacher in more detail after this... ugh, some people ...

I'm a teacher, and I draw me being beheaded. Mostly as an example of grammar points usually (I die, you die, he/she/it dies) What does that count as? Or are mine alright because I do it with educational rather than malicious intent?
