Some of you may have seen GameDamage, the new TV show from Yahtzee and co. In said TV show they review (kinda) a few MMO's, one of which was City of Heros, so, based on the fact Yahtzee wasn't too dismissive of it I'm going to give it a go on the 14 day free trail just to get a taste of a different kind of MMO.

As I'm sure, many of you play it and love it to bits. As for myself I've always been a "medieval" kinda MMO'er with the lieks of UO, WOW, and most recently WAR.

So then, lets get on with the point of the thread.

Has anyone bought a game based on Yahtzee's review of it, or not bought one for that matter?

No, because though I find his videos awesome, I don't see them as reviews per se. Well, technically they are, but you know what I mean.

cant say im all that affected by reviews overall, i watch them mostly for the entertainment value, i watch just about every review i find on select gaming sites cause i like knowing stuff about games, even if im never going to try them out.

So no, i have not been affected by Yahtzee more than the fact that he's given me stomach cramps a couple of times :p

Well, maybe I tend to take reviews a little to heart and head more than others. Sure they are just one persons opinions, but when can you say that you've been in a store looking for a new game, picked one up with a sicker saying "9/10 The best game this year" and not even thought about giving it a try?

Thus im trying city of heros.....give me something to do for 14 days, and it cant be all that bad cause Yahtzee said so. I'd probably give it ago if someone else did a review and said it was ok as well...

And yeah, I got Phyconaughts thanks to Yahtzee as well....he wasn't wrong about the difficulty curve....

I see his episodes as more entertainment than actual reviews, but I do take what he says into account when I purchase a game. For example, I was thinking about picking up Sonic Unleashed in a few months after the price has dipped to, say, $20. However, after seeing his most recent review, and how he tore many a catastrophic hole in my potential game purchase, I have decided to probably not buy the game at all, or maybe wait for some kind of bargain bin $10 sale or something.

No - I find his videos amusing, but his views are often incredibly distorted, and he focuses on his own opinion (they are really just rants) way to much for them to be considered fair reviews.

Thats true, but if it wasnt for Yahtzee's review GammaChris would have probably wasted some cash just to find out it sucked. But yeah, in some cases it is just ranted, but most of the games he's reviewed I've either played or I owe, and as such I kinda have something to back up his views, yeah I did think his review of Spore was a bit harsh at first, but after playing it for a few weeks or so I got what he meant. It's kinda weird when i think about it. Whether or not I have the same taste in games as Yahtzee or what, I don't know, i just sorta get what he means most of the time.

Count me among those who count Yahtzee's videos as "entertainment" rather than "reviews" or "informative" or anything else. Also count me among those who are sick of his fanboys constantly quoting his one-liners as a cheap substitute for having something original to say, and attacking anyone who ever disagrees with his opinions.

I haven't stopped liking the FF series just because Yahtzee doesn't like "JRPGS." I still think SSBB is one of the greatest games of this generation. I don't care much for the Half-Life series and I didn't start just because Yahtzee didn't rag on it, and while I do like Portal, I liked it before he did. I would still like No More Heroes even if he'd torn into it, just like I still like the Mario and Zelda franchises even though he attacked them. I admit that he did stir up a bit of interest in Saint's Row 2, but even then I went out and did some research of my own. And I'm still interested in Mirror's Edge, although I won't be getting either of those games until I get another 360, which won't be happening for a while.

I like watching ZP. But I fucking hate what it's done to The Escapist.

I avoided Too Human, but that was after watching GT reviews aswell. But Yahtzee got me suspicious of the game in the first place.

I probably wouldn't have bought Call of Duty 4 if Yahtzee hadn't been so impressed with it. I'd never played a Call of Duty game before and while it was tempting me, I saw no reason to break the trend.

My wife bought Alone in the Dark in spite of his review and for some reason enjoyed it. :/

this is a pretty split debate by the looks of it. Some just regard it as funny, and others see it as a half review/half rant. I think its worth taking into account what Sylocat Galaxialconda said and do your own research as well. Still, if you're watching Yahtzee and having to do research as well then surely he has some validity when it comes to reviews?

P.S I'm not a fanboy in anyway, I too find his reviews to be more rant and humour but I do listen to what he says and such...

(A) No, I usually purchase a game based on what I see from Metacritic and whether or not I like the game after renting it. I usually watch ZP because it's hilarious.

(B) on a side note, am I the only one who thought GameDamage's pilot episode sucked?

Not in the least. I watch them, but wholeheartedly diagree with him on certain games. Case-in-point: Mirror's Edge. I love that game. I have no problem, even on Hard, just tearing through it. For me, this is the first- First Person Platformer ever done right. For him, well, it sounded like he wasn't to good at it.

Yahtzee is a rarity. An honest reviewer. He doesn't panda around saying "If you like such and such this is the game for you", he'll just flat out says "This game is shit"

I trust him, a lot more than I trust any other game reviewer. That doesn't necessarily mean I always agree with him.

no quite a few did, i didnt think it was that bad really, but it was just a pilot. I thought the master chief suit was funny, and the metal gear solid thing
