Yahtzee's genius lies in his delivery and brutal honesty. But being honest myself, I have never let reviewers sway me into buying one thing or another. Yahtzee hated Devil May Cry 4 and Soul Calibur IV, I purchased both because both games interested me and I ended up liking them. His endless praise for Psychonauts (along with every indie cred fanboy in existence) is never going to get me to buy it because it just doesn't appeal to me. I am interested in Portal, a game he likes, but I've been hesitant to buy it because it comes with a bunch of games I wasn't interested in. I might buy it the orange box now though because the price has come down.

What I'm trying to get across is that while a review is a useful tool if you know nothing about a game. If a game interests you and it's something you know you'll like, don't let anyone influence your decisions.
See, I got DMC4 the day it came out for the pure fact I liked the other 3. Just one of those guilty pleasures, but it was crap, I love it, but it's a pile of rubbish. I've lent it to many friends and they all say the same, that it sucks. So on that note Yahtzee didn't influence me, just prepared me for what was to come...didn't stop me pending £40 on it.

I'm thinking about getting the Prince of Persia games, thanks to his retrospective review on the Sands of Time trilogy.

Yes.

Despite his unfavorable review of The world ends with you, I went and bought it anyway, mostly because if he was bothering to review it it might be worth it, but also because I thought he was being to critical of it.
Also, No More Heroes.

I don't think I've actually bought or not bought anything because of a Yahtzee review, but I've played City of Heroes and it is one of, if not the most competent and enjoyable MMORPG floating around this big great internet of ours. This is in part due to the excellent character creation, which lets me be a giant amazonian fembot who takes orders from the tiny pink cat on her shoulder. Rock on.

Interestingly enough city of heroes/villains community is like 70% disgruntled WoW players who liked City of better and decided to stick around for it.

I have never bought a game based a Yahtzee's review. I liked/hated No More Heroes before ZP. Likewise I called Halo mediocre around the time Halo2 was released. My opinion parallels Yahtzee's a lot, but I form my opinion before I see his videos. But his videos do make me think and to look deeper into other reviews before a purchase.

If your really not intrested in the other games you can buy Portal as a stand alone title for £15 on the PC, and its now avaialable of xbox live arcade for the same price.

But please, do concider getting the whole package. Your getting 5 games for the price of one. Its a much better use of your money. Half-Life is a very good shooter, escially episode 2 which has my faviourite ending in a game ever. Team Fortress 2 is also a fantastic multiplayer game, and its simply beautiful.

quote]

What the hell is a fair and unbiased review? As the man himself has said, a review is a subjective opinion.
One of the first lines in his recent Sonic review explained the following:

. That he was LOOKING for a game he knew he would dislike
. That he wanted to dislike it
. That he would never give it a chance

If you honestly believe hes a good reviewer then by all means beleive that - but its kind of obvious its entertainment only.
By going by most of his reviews, that's looking at any game that isn't Condemned, Silent Hill 2, Prince of Persia, or the Half Life series. When he reviews games that everyone already knows is shit, it's entertainment. When he doesn't, it's a review. You may have to stop and think about the negative things he says, but it's a review nonetheless.
I called it a review...

I'm not disputing the fact they are reviews - IM simply stating they are not reviews you should watch to give you an insight into a game.

While I did many times disagree with Yahtzee, I tried out Psychonauts and Painkiller based on his reviews and enjoyed both games. I take his observations to be a good guide, but not his preference, necessarily.

I didn't know that Psychonauts was an under-rated gem - apparently - (haven't got it yet but I will), and it was the first time I heard the names: Mother 3 and Braid, which got me intrigued.

He has got me interested and made me be wary about a couple of games, but I'm not going to take his word as gospel.

I think Yahtzee's reviews can be taken seriously, albeit with a pinch of salt, and as one man's opinion.

I haven't gotten or avoided any games from Yahtzee's reviews, though Russ Pitts and Susan Arendt have gotten me interested in looking up a game or two.

Yahtzee does do a good job and someone linking me one of his reviews is how I found The Escapist, but he should find a line of work he enjoys rather then playing games he hates :p

I've never been influenced by Yahtzee, I watch (like many others here do) ZP for entertainment value only, not for the review itself.

For some reason, I'd actually thought about renting Sonic Unleashed. Apparently someone rammed nails into my brain.

And sometimes I actually try out a game after he's trashed it, like Mercs 2 or Fracture. In those cases he's pretty spot-on.
