As metalheads, is it compulsory that we must hate?

It depends really... I tend to like a wide variety of music but tend to listen to alternative rock the most. As a musician even if I don't like a song I can still appriciete it as a piece of music. But, some metal heads and a lot of other people for that matter seem to be a little stubborn and refuse to accept that any other type of genre can equal their own. On the other hand, a lot of metal heads are the exact opposite and are very nice people so I don't thinks its fair to say its only metal head who act like that... its everyone!

YES!

This.

I dislike both Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, but I can appreciate that both bands are immensely talented and make great music.

I wish more people were similar in this aspect. I can appreciate musical talent regardless of genre.

I like so many different types of music, I'd be contradicting myself all the time. I do hate specific bands though.

Green Day and Kate Nash. Both of you must be purged. I will have your hearts on a pike.

I can't stand pop music. After some issues that caused me to not be able to drive for a few months, I had to ride with my mom and/or sister and they had the radio on... where the hell did all the guitars go!? I swear I didn't hear a single guitar the entire time and I literally heard the same 3 songs every time I got in the car... Also, with the mainstream music that does have guitars, why can't the bands learn to play more than 3 chords? I suck at guitar and I learned how to play Holiday by Green Day in 5 minutes one day...

Well, I'm not much of a metal fan, so most of my exposure to it is through friends of mine. But I'm pretty sure Ramstein is metal, and I'm pretty sure that while in German, almost all their songs are about violence, sex, or violence and sex.
This is another thing that annoys me... Rammstein... I tell people that some of my favorite metal bands are from Germany, and they always say "oh, I love Rammstein too". Rammstein I don't really even like that much, and they are not the only metal band to come out of Germany... Same effect when I am talking about metal to people who go on about how they are huge metal heads and they only listen to Disturbed, Slipknot, Rammstein, new Avenged Sevenfold (well, mostly the utter shit City of Evil CD), etc. Ugh...

The fact is that fans of any music try to promote that genre, in the hopes of encouraging talented artists to join that genre. One method of promoting something is to insulting its enemies.

Since metalheads are stereotypically (though I know this to be amusingly inaccurate) violent, macho types, we're more likely to insult things we don't like than typical pop fans.
Alright I'm going to have to call you on that, metalheads are not violent, were rather passive as a race. People seem to be un nervingly violent twords us, in many case I've heard of metal heads being beaten to death because we dress different to everyone else.
I will give you macho though.
Well, there is the hardcore crowd, though I'd only apply "Macho" to the FSU gangs who listen to hardcore. As a metalhead, I find that metal inspires awe as well as sounding good (to those who like it), while the particular pop artists we know and hate (Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Britany Spears, etc.) are more oriented towards people who just want something to listen to. I've learned to accept that not everyone who listens to different music necessarily thinks it is the best, just as I'm willing to eat fast food instead of organic gourmet for dinner.

Of course there have been equal displays of talent among other genres. One big mistake among metalheads is when they only look for the things they like in their music when listening to other music. Since there are many ways to appreciate music, that can lead to controversy.

I never liked music, never, i listened to all types and the only thing that sticked was classic rock. So one day i listened to a friend and tried metal and it changed my life. I wont to some kid with the potentil to be a jock fag and your standered prep to a metal head with a deep burning hatred for all those who sorround me. All other types of music are unworthy to be seen on the same plain of existence as metal. The uninspired soless abominations who have no emotion or thought must be burned with the sacred fire of the gods and its burnt ashes sucked into a black whole where its atoms will be torn apart and gone forever. \m/
I hope you're joking.

If not, it's pretty pathetic that you think like that just because of music.
Well i have always hated my peers, they sortof disgust me in a sense.
What bands do you listen to?

Does it not occur to you that a large amount of metal(like every other genre) is very cliched and uninspired?
Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Manowar, Judas Priest
Yeah. The big problem is that music, like abstract art, has its share of fakes who try to get by on style alone, and just like politics, it is those fakes who get the most attention in mainstram culture. It was this knowledge that made me decide to search for an obscure hip hop artist who might redefine all I ever thought about hip hop. Still looking though.

Well most people classify me as a metalhead...but I like all types of music, but most of it just happens to be metal. Bet you can't find anyone else with Cannibal Corpse and NSYNC on their itunes =p
