Ashes of the Past - A tale of explorers and archaeologists from the future of an alternate world to our own, excavating the ruins of the past to find out what shaped their world.



You are a collection of scholars and explorers, historians and archaeologists, journalists and magic specialists that inhabit an alternate Earth known as Terra, 10,000 years into the future from now. Your task is to uncover Terra's secrets, and the reason for the collapse of society due to the great catastrophic phenomenon known as the endless winter,a freak ice age that has plagued Terra since 10,000 years ago, wiping out 3/4 of the population and most major civilizations, and suspecting that the two are somehow related,you choose to dig down deep into the history of Terra, trying to find the causes of the endless winter,as well as understanding the giant glacial structures that have appeared all over the land, strangely tall and menacing, and do not feel at all natural.

You cannot approach the so called "Towers of Winter" as they are swarmed by beasts, and being scholars, you are not exactly adept at fighting. You start to find clues by exploring around the towers, gathering samples, excavating ruins and seeing what secrets they hold.

But you soon find you are not alone.


This RP will be low magic, and probably low fighting because the people who are involved, although they can fight, are not supposed to be fighting specialists. This will mean that players will have to be intuitive, working together to find a clever solution to an otherwise unsolvable problem. This will be a game of logic, skill and sharpened wits.

I've just come back from a year and a half long break from the escapist and it's incredible role playing forums, so I thought I'd start my return by introducing a much lighter RP, not filled with too much heavy text and detailed worlds. I thought I would develop the plot as I go along with the help of the storytellers, to the tune of the actions you take, rather than to a set story I have in my head. Although this is "just" an interest thread, because I'm lazy, I may just get the RP to begin from here.

Now get to work on those character sheets! ;)

Gear you carry around: Several notebooks, one with notes about magic another with magic spells and uses, another 2 empty. Pencils. One knife for cutting. Glasses. A pouch of chalk sticks. Thigh bag with notebooks and pencils inside, on the other side of the belt he wears the pouch.
Why you want to join this RP: I'm still fairly new and i think this is a good way to get some role playing experience from. Plus this looks like an interesting role play.
Unique Special Ability: magic user and magic researcher.
Spell-book.

Least level:
Flame; creates a 2 inch flame at the end of the dominate hands pointer finger. Doesn't burn the caster.

Ice; create a half inch cube of ice on the palm of the casters dominate hand.

Shock least; a very weak charge(3000 volts) of electricity jumps between the thumb and for-finger of the casters dominate hand. Jumps back and forth 5 times. Doesn't shock the caster.

Freeze least; the air or an object in the casters dominate hand lowers 5 degrees in 5 seconds. Doesn't effect the caster.

Heat least; the air or an object in the casters dominate palm raises 5 degrees in 5 seconds. Doesn't effect the caster.

Low level:
Low Shock; a weak charge(8000 volts) jumps between the for-finger and thumb of the casters dominate hand 7 times. It doesn't shock the caster.

Low Freeze; the air or an object in the casters dominate hand drops 10 degrees in 8 seconds. The spell doesn't effect the caster.

Low Heat; the air or an object in the casters dominate hand raises 10 degrees in 8 seconds. The spell doesn't effect the caster.

Mid level:
Lesser Telekinesis; one object 15 pounds or less is lifted and moves as the caster desires. Moves at a maximum speed of 10 mph. Spell length is 20 seconds unless dispelled before.

Mid strength Shock; a charge (20,000 volts) jumps between the for-finger and thumb of the casters dominate hand until dispelled. It can't shock the caster.

Mid strength Freeze; the air or an object in the casters dominate hand drops 20 degrees in 14 seconds. It doesn't effect the casters hand.

Mid strength Heat; the air or an object in the casters dominate hand raises 20degrees in 14 seconds. It doesn't effect the casters hand.

Lesser Scry; a one foot square one way window is opened to another place. It must be a place the caster has been to before. No sound can be heard. Lasts for one minute.

High level:
Lightning bolt; a line of electricity flashes between the dominate hand of the caster and out into a straight line out to 60 feet. Then it hits the closest conductive object if it hasn't hit a target before hand. The voltage is roughly a billion volts within the first 5 feet and drops down to roughly 500,000 volts at 60 feet.

greater Heat; the air or an object in the casters dominate hand raises 60 degrees in 15 seconds. It doesn't effect the casters hand.

greater Freeze; the air or an object in the casters dominate hand drops 60 degrees in 15 seconds. It doesn't effect the casters hand.

greater Telekinesis; one object 30 pounds or less is lifted and moved as the caster desires. Moves at a maximum speed of 20 mph. Spell length is 20 seconds.

The magic specialists, they can use actual magic? Or are they just people who know a lot about magic.

Well specialising in Magic I feel that obviously you should have some use of magic, but having spent much more time delving into magical research rather than the practical sides, you are not as adept as a battlemage. I thought it would be interesting to put people on the spot and limit their abilities, to see what they could come up with to solve a problem ;)

Is anyone here interested in becoming one of the storytellers? I can't guarantee that I'll be around for the entire RP every single post so it'd be nice if someone would continue the story on for me if I was unavailable.

If you are, please PM me with your character's nickname, why you'd like to be a storyteller and how much time you'd be able to contribute to the project.

Well ya, i wasn't asking about being a battlemage. I just wanted to know if they knew magic. Since he is a researcher i assume he knows a lot more interesting types. i was thinking the most battle magic he will know is lightning bolt, but that's its secondary use because he uses it for other things when others want to use something concerning electricity.

Do you want me to write up a list of spells he would know and what about they would do?

I have no problems with that! I might now add a "unique special ability" section to the character sheet.

Just being an interest thread, unless we obtain more people interested in this RP, I'm afraid that this thread will remain an interest thread...and the RP wont start.

Gear you carry round: An odd assortment of tools, metals and materials used for tinkering, construction and experimentation.
Why you want to join this RP: It has an air of mystery about it. Plus the puzzle dynamic seems very alluring.
Unique Special Ability: Increased strength and endurance.

I was thinking the character lacking legs, half her face and an arm, having them replaced with assorted, cobbled together engineering as a kind of of cyborg thing. Note a firm hit to the chest or head would most likely kill her, also due to her body size the limbs aren't that large and don't increase her strength and endurance that much. She could easily lift her own weight, but not a motorcycle, for instance.

Just an idea, I'd work on it more after enough interest is poured into this RP so we can start. (if you let me in anyway)

It's more so I can separate you storytellers out from the players..not to mention, we don't want the players to know the story before they "play" it =3

Unique Special Ability: Can teleport to swap places with her arrows (doesn?t work while they are inflight)

The bow isn't technically magic (just a normal bow) but Zy uses it to channel a very minor and specific magic talent she has (which she can only do because of the bow's personal significance to her).

How?s this as a character?

Also I'd be willing to try story telling for a bit.
Ah, Avouleance,a name I recognise from when I was last here! I'll accept your character sheet, but you can only be a storyteller or a player,and not both. I only plan to have 2 storytellers other than myself, so it might be worth deciding soon!
