Pass the conspiract theory tablets, and call the van and the men with the jackets that tie up at the back but...

Is it possibly TV shows show video games in a bad light regularly because videogames are the main competition to TV, and they're winning?

I imagine if a video game was not being shown played by a total loser or a psychopath, and in fact being played by the lead character or hero of the show, the videogame owners would probably let it pass without payment, simple positive product placement.

All the time the users of their product are portrayed as anti social freaks, it's no wonder the video game industry don't want their stuff seen on TV.

Also, notice how... involved people playing games on TV are. They always shake the controller, mashing buttons furiously and leaning into it.

I dunno. That's just how it is. Though there was one fantastically badass exception to this. On one episode of House, the titular doctor could be seen in a patient's room playing on an Xbox 360. You know what he was playing? Ninja Gaiden II. Awesome.

House. I remember this one particular time on House, where he's playing a Gameboy SP. Somebody asks him what he's doing, and he says, "Level 4."

And then we see a shot of the screen. He's playing Metroid: Zero Mission. Which doesn't exactly have "levels", and certainly doesn't have numbered levels.
Which is it, House?

WHICH IS IT?!

The best examples of gaming in western media is when the kid is really involved in the game, but whatever happend in the game when he was playing, still continues when he let's go of the controller to talk to someone.

Probably because they can show the system and controllers and all that but i think to actually use the game and it's correct sound they either have to pay to use it or the company has to give the okay and pay for the advertisement. I have an Adult Magazine where this girl is playing a PSone, Yeah it's old, and there are no wires coming out the back of it lol. Seemed relevant to the conversation somewhat lol.
But it's not even that the creators of the show have to pay to use a certain product. They just don't give a fuck about it, Dexter wasn't even using a mouse when he played Halo 3 on the PC. Realize how that last segment didn't make any sense, well that's what I mean.

Not to mention how angry they are. In Japanese shows gaming always seems to be an ok pastime. They don't assume that every kid who plays a game is a future serial killer like our media does.

Lie to Me got it right recently. It's annoying when they fabricate an entire game lookalike when it would just be cheaper and better for everyone to just bring someone's game console over with a copy of, pretty much, any game out there. Although maybe they do it because of all the copyright harassment. Considering how many people are sued for the stupidest things in America it would make sense.

Exactly. Thank you man, this is just what I had in mind when I created this thread. Discussion and speculation. This was simply a funny idea that crossed my mind and I thought it would be fun to share, we can ALWAYS learn more.

True. Me and my brother couldn't help but to smile in acceptance at the whole scene. Then again, I've always liked British comedies more than American.

I've been watching The Big Bang Theory. They have done both, they get it right and they get it wrong.

They've showed the guys Wii bowling and it showed the screen and it was Wii Sports bowling.

But, they have also talked a lot in the show about have Halo night.
Though anytime they show them playing it, they don't show the screen and the sounds are all wrong. The explosions sound weird. In one instance, they invited the girl across the hall, Penny, to join them, and she turned out to be really good at it. They showed sounds of instances where she kept shooting her competition in the head (obviously meaning the sniper rifle), and the sound for the sniper rifle was not a Halo sniper rifle sound.

I'm betting it is the answer already given that the show producers don't want to pay for the rights to show the games on their shows.
Why even mention the game by name then? Anyway, that show makes my fucking blood boil.

I imagine it has something to do with the difficulties involved with licensing. The makers of the various games and hardware (or rather their western counterparts) don't want the product appearing in the show etc. without compensation, and they can't work out a reasonable deal. I imagine the Japanese aren't as anal about that sort of thing so it's not as much of an issue over there.

I don't know. Never really thought about it. Maybe they have more gamers who'd recognize it if they screwed up.

Because it can be used to attract people who play Halo and even if they don't, its a big enough game that everyone knows about it.

I remember an episode of Smallville about a year ago (as in, long before Kinect was out) where they played that. That amused me, was never really sure why it was in though. I always thought it was deliberate advertising.

We live in a world where a concerned mother sues a gaming magazine for putting Alice The Madness returns on a cover (since she expected Alice to be friend with all the singing flowers and rainbows). That's the average Joe, who calls all consoles Sega Mega, doesn't know how to
instal those Internets" etc etc.

But you gotta pay royalties to use a name too right? You can't just go: Halo! Halo! Halo! He is a pretty cool guy! in your show.

...Japanese video game players also get persecuted for their "weird" hobbies. I don't really see a difference with how they treat games from the west.

To the West, getting gaming accurate is unimportant.
