What do you think of the 2001 ps2 classic The Bouncer? ??......... oh wait it was shit

On a more serious note how did you get your first job
When I moved to Galway for college I had no work lined up. On the first day of college we had a mature students meeting day. I got talking to a guy who was working for a security company, I asked him for his bosses' number. Before I rang him though I printed up a CV saying I had 3 years experience at a pub back home. I then rang a mate of mine from home and told him I was given his number as a reference, as the manager of this fake pub. One short interview later I was sorted. Started 2 days later, I was fucking shitting myself!

OT: What was the worst situation you ever had to deal with?
Erm, There has been a few. A few years ago durning Race Week there was six doormen, inculding me working in a pub that was ment to hold 300 people, but there was closer to 800 in it, it had a massive beer garden, but still it was shocking! One of opur lads had tried to take a out a group of lads who turned out there was around 20 of them and they did not want to go! It was the closest I have ever come to being in a riot. Because it was so busy, people outside the group of 20 lads got involved. In the end we were able to drive them to the gate, but we were fighting them for around 20 minutes. I got a nice black eye out of it.

There are a few more but one other one is when I had to stop Olympic Boxer Francie Barrett (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francie_Barrett). I had to stop him because he is a Traveller and, in general they are bad news and not let into pubs. Nothing happend, but having that guy in my face was not fun.

How much do you work out? Is it better to be more intimidating or less intimidating?

Have you ever denied entry for a designated driver, or someone who was sober for any other reason, on the grounds that they were too drunk?

Used to. Going out with a girl for 3 and a half years now though. Still get offered though; two weeks ago a, pretty cute, girl was leaving the club. We were closed and I was letting people out. She said goodby and then stopped and turned, she said "I really like you" (she comes into the club a bit, and I chat to her from time to time). So I said, I like you too, or something to that effect. She said, "No I really like you, I wanna fuck you." She then pinned me against the wall (Ok, I might have let her) and started grinding off me. It was very funny, but I sent her on her way. Had a good wank about it that night though!

Yes, a sexy one!

1) Do you find most of the drunk people you meet mainly funny or just simply annoying?

2) Has anyone bigger than you ever tried to take you on?

3) Have you made any good friends from people you met while on the job?

4) What do you guys have against trainers?!
1) Funny, most people are cool.

2) Yeah man, the whole time. Just try and calm them down, I'm not there to fight.

3)You mean customers? Lots of buddys, people I say hey to in the street or chat to if I met them out in the pub when I was off, that I could have lunch with in college if I bumped into them, but only one guy I arrange to meet, so only 1 friend.

4) Scumbags tend to ware traniers to pubs, easy as that.

Oh come on! Long-distance relationships were made to let you get away with that sort of thing!

If you don't get in is there any point in trying again later?
Nah, not really. I mean if you're too drunk, or not dressed right, or whatever, what is gonna change in the next hour or so? If you come back you'll just get stopped again. The best thing you caqn do is not argue, behond pleading your case, once. Leave quitely and come back another night. No doorman will change their mind once the decision has been made, even if it was the wrong one.

Ha! Not really, but a good looking girl on your arm will not hurt your chances!

What do you think of Bouncers who do not I.D and allow those (mainly Girls) under 18 (or maybe 21 for you) in to a place?
Ah, it happens, but it is not right.Normally done by younger bouncers looking for the ride.

Is there a time in the year that you know is going to be busy, and rowdy as hell. Like holidays from New Years, Halloween, Saint Patties etc? Since you work at an atmosphere with alcohol involved, and dealing with drunk people, do you find drinking not that interesting?

More, i'd say, less chance of people fucking with you. I don't work out much though. I do press ups every day (up to 120) I play football once a week and I walk ever where. I'm over weight though, but have been losing it. I rely on my personalty to get me by, I'm pretty good with people. I've lost count of times people have told me I was "The soundest bouncer they have ever met". Tis a generalization, for sure, but door work, nut its nature, tend to attract people who are insecure, body builder also tend to be insecure. I'm not insecure.

Oh yeah! "You're too drunk" is my get out of jail free card. There is no come back from it. People who are too drunk will always dissagree with me, so saying "I'm not even drinking" will not help. Its your opinion against mine, but mine is the only opinion that matters.

I would use it if I did not the look of someone. I can't say "Your not coming in cause you look like a scumbag" not if I want to keep my nose where it is. Everone has been stopped for begin too drunk at some stage, its not personal (even though it is). Sober people just tend to call me a dickhead and walk off, I can deal with that. Saves a row.

How much, urm, 'fighting' is required? Most bouncers are stereotyped as brutes, but from the ones I've met they're actually clever negotiators, and do everything they can to avoid violence.

Not that they couldn't kick the guy's ass, but...
Yeah, you pretty much answered the question your self, regarding me anyhow. Some bouncers I work with love fighting. I don't

At all times you must appear very confident.

Do you practice Martial Arts? If yes, which ones?
Do you have collegues who are thin and don't look strong? If yes, how come they are bouncers, did they have to "prove" (don't ask me how) that they could break up a fight (or end one) if necessary?

Oh yeah, Paddy's Day, Rag Week, Race Week are all a pain in the arse, very stress full.

No I love a few beers! Though I do have a greater understanding of the effects of alcohol on people. Some times I come home from work hating the human race.

Do you generally get shit from people because you're a bouncer? Or are you well respected?
Respect? From regualr customers that know me pretty well and know what I'm like, yes. From everone else, no.

People love to hate bouncers; they see us as the school teachers/parents of thier drinking days, telling them what to do. I have been bring people, some times physically, and have been punched in the back of the head and side of the face, just beacuse I'm a bouncer. The people that hit me don't anything about me, or why I'm bring a guy out. They hit me because I'm a symbol of authority, not a real person, as such.

what made you decide to keep working as a bouncer? Is this permanent for you, or will you do something related to your education in the future?
Mainly asking because it seems even though you say it's a shit job, you get a lot of awesome experiences from it, which may even the odds in favor of working as a bouncer.
