Hello escapist. Recently, I've seen a trend in "Ask A ----" posts, so i thought i would throw my hat into the ring. For about 4-5 years now I have been training in karate, muay thai, jujitsu, krav maga, and brazilian kick boxing and in a couple of months I'm going to be entering the amateur ring. So, anyone have any questions about the fine sport of fighting they would like answered?

Do you realize just learning the moves and not practicing them daily until they are second-nature is not enough to help you in real life?

Have you met or sparred with any fighters?
Because I'm a black belt in Kyokushin and BJJ, and I have sparred with Wanderlei Silva, Anderson Silva, and Lyoto Machida, and have met some heavyweight fighters such as Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture.

The same thing could be said for any sport. Or any hobby, for that matter.

Yes I do. That's why i go to a Dojo and test my skills against others who train with me. Its a terrible idea to just practice, practice, practice without getting any real "Human to Human" interactivity. It just doesn't have the same feel to it.

Have you ever gotten a foot to the groin face so hard that right after that sparring, you thought why are you there in the first place?

I disagree, fighting is different to those. It's about quick refles. I went to karate as a kid until I quit because I didn't want to get really involved, and I don't think I ever used it to defend myself. Maybe blocking a few blows but not the moves I learned from my teacher, never in real life.

Which leads me to my 2nd question, did you ever learn a move to deal specifically with armed atackers? I didn't, and can't tell you which type of karate I studied.

You completely deflected my point. I'm trying to say that all sports will never help you in real life, unless you are a professional athlete.
Basketball players practice their shots over and over, until shooting becomes "second nature".
Same thing for football, and soccer, and even videogames.
Say, you want to play Call of Duty, a game all about twitch reflexes. You practice so much that you can check every corner, and you always get the first shot. When does that come into play in the real world? It doesn't.

I suppose I worded that poorly.
I meant professional fighters.

Deflecting is an important part of fighting :D

But martial arts are a way of life, much more than sports ( well they used to be ,*sigh*,they never teached us the living part )

I didn't realize what you meant until just now.

What do you mean? Like, kicked so hard i forgot where i was, or questioning whether i actually wanted to be there?

If you are as big as your avatar, no-one could.

OT: Are you actually hurt, or is it-like wrestling- incredibly bad acting?
Oh ya all the time. You mostly don't feel it during the fight though, with all the adrenaline and such. plus pain conditioning helps. eventually you just don't feel it as bad.

Yes, like if someone comes at you from behind with a gun, or if you're being charged by a guy with a bat.

Actually you should go into Every fight thinking "This person can beat me and i must try my best to defeat them" If you go in over confident and with a heightened sense of self you will allow your ego to get the best of you. Once this happens even if you win the fight down the road you will continue to think you can take anyone until one day you let your guard down to someone who looks like a push over but is better then you and knocks your ass out before you know what happened.
Well i guess i worded that rather poorly. Your right of course about being OVER confident, but you can't have any doubt in your abilities, or else you will get your ass handed to you on a silver platter.

What I mean is- right after that fight where you got your ass handed back to you(surely it has happened, right), have you had any doubts about keeping on attending the classes?

Here's another question: What's it like to be knocked out? I've never been knocked out, but I may have seen it even too often. So it got me wondering..

Also, what injuries have you had over the years of training?

(PS. I suck at quoting..)
