I've shamelessly stolen this idea from smearyllama. I would apologise, but then it wouldn't be shameless.

I live rurally in the North Island, not far from the East coast (near the city of Hastings, to be precise).

One stipulation: no sheep-related questions. None of us Most of us do not hump sheep.

Otherwise, you can ask whatever you want, but hopefully we can avoid questions like "what's the weather like?" or "what's the cost of living?". The first one can be answered by Wikipedia, and the latter is essentially relative.

Thanks, now most of my questions have no merit. My bud has been nipped.

What do you think of Flight of the Concords as a native New Zealander?

Oh man, I was gonna ask this.

OT. Does rural NZ all look like the LotR movies? On account they filmed it there

What kind of cars do you guys drive down there?
I suppose they'd all have to be imports of some kind...

Much how I feel about sheep, actually: occasionally exasperated that they seem to define the country. Many times they're the first topic that comes up when someone discovers my nationality. On the flipside, it's nice that they're at least still associated with the nation.

You have variations, of course, and a fair bit is either a lot more barren or cultivated than what you see in the movies, but on the whole, yes.

Primarily it's Japanese imports, Holdens (an Australian subsidiary of GM), and Fords. Holden vs Ford is the defining car rivalry for New Zealanders, but practicality and budget dictate that Japanese imports are the most common sight on the road.

Ha ha! So I was able to accomplish using a broad generalization of your country without resorting to sheep. I would call this a success.

What do you think of kiwis?

Damn, now I actually have to go outside and validate everything I've said.

It's different. I lived in a sub-urban area until my early teens, and again during university, so I have some experience to draw a comparison.

In truth, it really depends what sort of person you are. It's quieter, the scenery is nice, you don't have to worry about your neighbours nearly as much. Once you have a driver's licence and money for fuel, I think it's better. Still, you are more isolated from people, and not being able to "pop down to the shops" is irritating. And the internet is worse than normal, if that's even possible. So basically, it depends how much you like to socialise and be around other people.

But yesterday I was baiting a ferret trap with a decapitated rabbit's head while carrying a shotgun around, and generally you don't get to do stuff like that in the suburbs.

I'll be brutally honest here: personally, I don't care as much as I should. Yes, they're our national icon, etc, etc, but honestly, if they disappeared tomorrow I'd be more disappointed at the reduction of biodiversity than anything else.

I kinda feel the same way about bald eagles.

Have you ever had anyone ask you what continent NZ is on?

Thankfully, no. The number of people who lump abstractly lump us together with Australians is another matter, though.

I would, but I might make the other Kiwi jealous. *eyes mother suspiciously*

Hmm...actually, here we go. Are the majority of your trees still enormous? Actually, I guess that depends on where you live...

More or less. There are areas of native bush with some fairly old and sizeable trees, but there's also a lot of commercial pine forests. If you tour around New Zealand, you won't be stumbling over gargantuan flora at every turn, put it that way.

So how long does it take to cross the bridge from Australia to NZ?

[sub][sub]No I'm not Googling "stupid questions to ask a New Zealander." Why would you get such a preposterous idea?[/sub][/sub] [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SuspiciouslySpecificDenial]

Whats your opinion on Australians in general?
Well they have just as much prestigious annoying douchebags as this country (relative to population, obviously), but their economy works better so I personally like it better as a country than this one. And they actually have a legitimate culture, too.
