Considering The Escapist has thousands of members from various countries, I'm starting this thread so you can ask someone from another country about somthing in their country.
I'll start: Are there really spiders in Australia that sometimes hide under the toilet bowl rim?
There are, but they have to be able to get in to your bathroom first! They tend to show up only out on stations and the like, places that still have full-on outhouses.

Just how much of a problem are the poisonous critters in Australia? Do you have to routinely check shoes and stuff?
Talking about the hot places, of course.
It depends on where you are, but even in parts of Sydney and Canberra, it can get pretty bad. I knew people who stepped on a dozen redblack spiders (one of the most dangerous) every time they left their house. For the most part, you won't see snakes in the inner suburbs of the cities, but the farther out you get, the more common they are. Honestly, they'd be much more of a problem if people weren't used to them. As it is, people accept the spiders and snakes and insects, and then get on with their lives.
