I've always wanted to the east coast. Not to high like New England and New York, not too low like Florida. Virginia or on of the Cariolina states, maybe even Georgia.

i read "ask a virgin" and i thought it was funny.

it turns out it says ask a virginian and its just sad. i hate these freaking threads. no one has any questions about virginia! its a state! just like new york, or massachusets, or oregan. its not like you are from egypt and have important facts or perspective on the turmoil there. ive been to virginia. its really nothing special. (i sound like a total douche here...)

Another Virginian here, though from more of a central area from Richmond. I'm not sure this would make an exciting thread though. Either way, it's a decent state with a mostly temperate climate and an overall decent economy. It's one of those a little bit for everybody type of states.

To answer Berserker, if the two Virginias ganged up they could definitely take on Ohio.

Virginia is alright, but there's not as much to do here as you might think.

Now that you've had a couple warm up questions, I've got one for ya.

My wife and I are thinking about moving out of state within the next few years. We would like to stay close to a coast as we both love the ocean and we're trying to moving someplace warmer (gogo seasonal affective disorder -_-) So I would ask you, Mr. Virginian...

How is the weather year round? I don't expect it to be drastically different than up here in Pennsylvania, but a few degrees warmer would be nice.

How's the cost of living?

What are the people of the state like overall? At the risk of being kind of offensive, I'll just be blunt. We're liberal agnostic. Would we find the place to be welcoming regardless of that? Are there areas in the state that are more of an 'artistic community' so to speak?

I think I should be able to answer this one a bit better than the OP. I'm a college student native to Virginia Beach, so I have more experience with the coastal areas. In southern Virginia (aka the Newport News area) the weather tends to be far warmer than the rest of the state. The ocean provides a moderating effect that prevents rapid fluctuation in temperature. Winter temperatures range from 15-40 degrees with very little snow (usually less than 6in all winter, if that). Summer temperatures range from about 75-90 depending on the year. The summers can get a bit humid due to the ocean, but it's by no means horrible.

As far as housing and cost of living are concerned, housing prices vary greatly. The cost of living is about on par with the rest of the eastern coast, although my area is below the national average. Housing can be kind of expensive if you want coastal property, but we are suburban enough that you can find affordable middle-class housing that's only a short drive from a beach.

I'm a Centrist Agnostic, and I've never had any problem with religious or political discrimination. We aren't far enough south to subscribe to any of the normal "deep south" stereotypes (although the center of the state can be an exception).

The crime rate in Virginia Beach is very low, but the same can't be said for neighboring Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake. If you have any interest in moving to this part of the state, VB is probably the best place. The ocean front has a large artistic community and the city is very involved in local festivals.
