Question, what are the qualifications needed to be a Walmart Greeter? Seems like something anyone can do.
There's really no qualifications but store managers prefer to put older people at the door thinking it gives a friendlier feel.

Same like Cat, I have no idea why Wal-Mart is so big. It's just another Tesco.
Walmart is 4% of all of China's exports.

Sorry that this isn't a question as a first response for the topic, but I went to WalMart several times when on holiday in Florida last year. Something actually surprised me over those two weeks, but in a pleasant way, in that the staff in WalMart (and people in general) seemed much friendlier and nicer than people here in the UK. I'm not sure if it's just a local trait of people in Kissimmee (possible), or if it's a general thing in the US, since I've heard about plenty of arrogant bastards in the US of A and was therefore generally pleased to meet such decent people during my time in the country. Especially given this occured a lot in WalMart, whereas British shop staff are generally irritating or idiotic (especially in Asda, which is coincidentally owned by WalMart).

By the way, I toyed with the idea of buying a DVD in WalMart but wasn't sure if it would work on a PAL DVD player or Xbox 360 back in the UK.

Why is it that everytime I go there that half of the items on the list are missing but products there are stacks of stuff no one buys? The items that people want the most are always stocked low or something.

How would you explain the popularity/hatred of WalMart to an non American?

Seriously as a Brit I can't see what the fuss is about surely WalMart is another supermarket like all the others right?
The hatred of Wal-mart comes from their business tactics. Their favorite thing to do is move into small towns and set up shop. Then they drive all other business out. Then they close down shop and leave the town to die from unemployment. That and they like to fire anyone for even mentioning the word Union. Want to make a the people who work at Wal-mart suffer? Print up some union propaganda the walk around the store dropping it off on shelves and such. Manager will hate you for life if he finds out.
This is exactly why I started this thread. People spouting misinformation.
Prove me wrong. Name a Wal-mart region that is unionized.
He already said Wal-marts DO NOT have unions, I don't see a problem with it. If you work at one and don't like how you're treated quit, if it was so bad everywhere Wal-Mart would not be able to attract any descent employees.

I would challenge you to come up with specific examples of your claims about thier business tacticts. Prefferably with an independant source (ie newspaper articles) to verify your claims.

All preventable if a Union was present. As for the moving in and shucking a town, that is unfortunately legal. No law specifically restricting it. A town I know that is suffering it is Port Angeles, Washington. I am done, but don't let the smiley fool ya people.

How would a union have prevented that? By demanding exorbitant wages causing the prices in those stores to go up? Be charging the workers $40/month dues to point out state laws and wal-mart policy that those workers were to spineless or ignorant to bring up themselves? Shutting down the store with a walk-out that cripples a community?

More a question of all shops but particularly big ones, I saw it in a film and it piqued my curiosity- Do you just sell guns/ammo off the shelves as a normal thing?
Rifles and shotguns are behind the counter as well as rifle and pistol ammo in a locked case with trigger locks on everything. Shotgun ammo is on the shelf. This is the same for just about every retailer that sells firearms.

Why are Wal-Mart oranges tiny?

When someone breaks something in Wal-Mart and tries to leave the scene without telling anyone and gets caught, do they have to pay?
Our oranges are tiny because they are cheaper and you can ship more in a truck.

If you try to leave the scene that usually means you broke it on purpose and you will probably have to pay. If it was an accident it gets cleaned up and sent to the back.

Do you have key indicators that determine who gets more hours, like if you work in electronics, how many accessories you sell, or do you guys not have to suffer that torture?

Hours are determined by your own availability, the shift you work and how busy the store should be at certain hours. Productivity has no bearing on how many hours you are scheduled.

You miss the point of the "Ask a" threads. These threads serve for the escapists to ask questions to strange or unusual individuals about what they do. Being a Wal-Mart worker is not strange or unusual.

What's the point in making a thread entitled "Ask the average joe"? None.

Wal-Mart tried the whole union thing in Canada, and it didn't work. Labor unions are a business, they are there to make money. They really don't do squat in taking care of their employees, I've had experience with both union and non-union labor, and the unionized labor is a load of shit.

Years ago where I worked once the employees were not unionized. Once the union came in the overall wages of new employees went down, most workers were forced into being part time and never doing over 36 hours a week (seriously it was always just around 36 hours a week). The only thing labor unions try to do is make sure companies follow local labor laws. The only difference in your 3 cases had there been a labor union is the union would brand its logo on the lawsuit and end up making a ton of cash if the union wins.

Oh no, not the return of the "Ask A" threads. But seriously the thread about the boy and the Madden game got me thinking. I've been with Wal-Mart over 6 years and have done literally almost every job in the store from cleaning bathrooms to apprehending thieves to managing. I promise I won't sugar-coat my answers (I have seen the absolute best and the absolute worst that this company can be). Please don't use this as a Wal-Mart bashing thread as that is just annoying and gets you nowhere.

So, ask away.
so wat do u guys think about unions?

Have you ever hidden in a clothing rack, and when somebody walked by, shouted in a squeaky high voice "pick me! pick me!"?

That would be awesome.
My question would be. Why is Walmart always so loud and crowded? I went there one time and it was unbearable.
Because it is a busy business

No, but I have put a turkey decoy on my head and duckwalked through apparel making turkey sounds. Scared the hell out of one of the managers.
