Well that does depend on the difficulty of getting the money. But in my opinion it's fan-freaking-tastic. As much as I enjoyed the first game, more weapons and less linear gaining of these weapons would have been great. Done properly, this currency system could potentially make the game twice as good as the first, regardless of other features. So I'm all for it.

(I can't wait to buy myself a big-ass hammer and take it to somones head.)

I like it, it expands on the sandbox element. Plus if AC2 is anything like other single player games, money will probably be ridiculously easy to get as long as you don't have to keep spending it for health-items or to repair weapons (which it doesn't sound like you have to do...).

I actually didn't like the whole "here, you get this upgrade after doing this for me". It was a pain to not be able to do everything I wanted. I like the fact that if I have the money, I can upgrade it myself without anything else holding me back.
I totally agree. Personally I think it's a shame that an open world game like AC still follows such a strict plotline. I hope this currency system means they're tryin to improve on that.
I doubt it'll be the stealth/action/RPG hybrid I'm imagining but hey, we can hope. :)
