So why does it matter that we're killing British in this game but its okay for us to go around slaughtering other people in other games?

Aaah okay, thanks for clearing that up. I'm assuming I shouldn't play this game if I want to further learn about this time in history?
Depends on what you like. I liked the cosmopolitan views that Ubisoft did in their previous AC games. I assume you know about the Assassin's Creed series? but yeah, I'm not sure if this is going to be grey vs. grey or not. seems that they forget the main reason the independence happened was for taxes, not independence.
Yeah I know about them. My friend always goes on about he learnt a bunch of stuff about Europe and the Renaissance so maybe it will help. To be fair, making the focus on independence is probably the easier, safer and more relatable? route rather than money. I know I'd feel a little more passionate about something if it was about independence rather than taxes but that's just me.

Its nice how seeing one trailer immediately turns it all around and "OMG THIS IS GOING TO BE SO ONE SIDED GAIS."

Christ people calm the fuck down.

So, this marketing campaign totally lives up to their nonsense about this being an Assassin's Creed story and not a Revolution story. Their series premise that the animus shows 'history as it really was' is looking lol-tastically ironic.

Up yours, Ubisoft.

No gameplay. Not a good trailer.
I'm still very excited for this game though. Screw assassinations. I'm gonna kill all the bears.

The issue is not that the enemy is british, the issue is the way that they are being portrayed.

Take the example of the nazis, as so so fucking many of you already have. Yes, the Germans are the enemies in those games, stemming from the fact that they (the enemy characters) are defending national socialism. Would I like to see a game that takes a more morally complex approach to the issue, yes, but the fact remains that we can all agree that the nazis were a bad idea and so it therefore becomes alright to portray it as the 'enemy other'. What you are shooting in these games isn't so much germans as avatars of 'the nazi'. They are not characters, they don't have thoughts or feelings, they are simply 'nazi'. That raises a whole other set of issues about dehumanisation, but that's another story, for another time.

Or for the more modern day approach, you are not shooting Muslims or Russians, you are shooting the specter of Islamic terrorism and of Ultra-nationalism. Again, both of those are bad things and while there are issues with the protrayal, it never comes down to condemning Islam or Russia.

the problem with the portrayal of the british so far stems from the same idea. These are not people with hopes or dreams, they are pop up targets to attack with your axe, but more importantly they are stand ins for a concept, the British governance over the thirteen colonies, so by having the british be the ones bashing in the doors of the poor woman's house or having them be the ones that are torturing the brave rebellious prisoners, it is fairly explicity equating that governance with those sort of actions. It is, quite simply propaganda to reenforce the view that the revolutionairies were paragons of selfless virtue facing up to an evil empire, when in reality, the Americans were no morally superior to the British.

On another point, a civil war is between two parties that identify themselves as belonging to the same nation. The Americans ceased to identify themselves as british when they tried to seperate themselves. To call the american revolution a britsh civil war makes about as much sense as calling the troubles the same thing.

Yeah, their really not doing very well for the whole "its ok guys you kill Americans too!" thing.

Yes, I understand the game will hopefully have American Templars too, but so far all their trailers are showing the British as token villains for no reason. That woman with the axe is a good example. So the British burnt down houses with women and children in them for the lulz? Yeah... This is gonna be The Patriot all over again.
