Its nice to think about where it should take place (I can agree with you that colonial America would be cool), but I think its fairly obvious that AC3 will take place in Desmond's time period. After all, the entire Desmond storyline in AC2 was to train him to be an assassin and
the end of the game tells you that there will be some big catastrophe Desmond has to stop
So yeah. Like him or not, Desmond will be the focus of AC3.

The next Assassin's Creed has already been confirmed to be set in Rome. The heart of the Templar Order.
The next Assassin's Creed game is going to be set in Rome. However it is not Assassins Creed 3. I believe its supposed to be more of a side game set in the same universe.
That's exactly it. The Assassin's Creed in Rome is not the "authentic" AC3.

To everyone saying it's already decided it will be set in rome it's not. A spin off for Assassin's Creed 2 (working title 'Assassin's Creed 2 Episodes' will have rome as part of the game because you play as Ezio again and this is the game with multiplayer it's unknown if Creed 3 will have it.

And I agree Cresent Sub that for Creed 3 victorian london would be a good setting.
Also Sebastien Puel from ubisoft has said they might continue the series up to a fith game.

And yes,I am a bit too far up Assassin's Creed's arse.

All my hope and dreams... gone....
I wonder why... perhaps because it's a city remarkably similar to all the other cities already in the game's series? There are quite a few fishy things about it too, like the fact it will have multiplayer. But the biggest thing is that they're aiming for a pre-March 2011 release. Is it just me? Or does it seem like AC3 is going to be remarkably similar to AC2? Barring a slight change in location.
AC2 was a winning formula, It makes sense to copy it, since their's a lot less to improve on, Ubisoft might have become directionless. In AC2's development, they had a whole list of things to fix. AC2 just has a few bugs and weird missions. It might be that they're at loss to find ideas on how they can improve AC2.

Most likely. But I'm still surprised that they'd make it that similar. At least as far as the time period goes.

Yeah, for an original idea it seems rather.... unoriginal...

Either:

Victorian London. Assassinating and then starting a high speed chase on a penny farthing would be the most awesome. thing. ever.

Or

Ancient Greece. You know it would be awesome.

Well, i've played both games and really enjoyed them, i was wondering when and where the next one should take place, thoughts?

I was maybe thinking 18th century america taking out red coats
but the redcoats were(at the time) the good guys, the colonials were bitching because of taxes and that they couldnt go live across appalachia(a law put in place to protect them) and defended slavery. The british may have been greedy capitalists, but the colonials were fascists warmongers

oh yea and the future for the ass. creed 3
