I am 99% sure this is sarcasm. But if that other 1% is right, well then ... I don't even.
Yep, I was sarcastic. I should commend you for being optimistic, though. It was common sense that my statement was sarcastic, but bear in mind most people on the internet are retarded and often serious about such stuff.

In the first month of release of Assassin's Creed I for the PC, it sold 40,000 copies, while being pirated 70,000 times http://www.gamespot.com/news/6195570.html , http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19736
So if it weren't for piracy, there would be a total of 110 000 copies sold?

Probably not. But there probably wouldn't be such insanely heavy DRM either.

Also, 70,000 fewer people I need to hate.

Those two examples you gave in the end there?
That's why I'm not a fan of Capitalism.

Why?
Because, to quote Scarface: "You know what Capitalism is? Getting fucked!"

I doubt they would've bought the game at all, but Ubisoft effectivly ensured they never would with the DRM.

I was quite willing to play AC2 on my Xbox 360, give Ubisoft money for a damn fine game... but I don't know if I can really blame PC gamers for skipping it/pirating, they get more features and a better experience, don't they?

"What's going on? An hour of progress, gone, because I got disconnected?! Raaaaargh!"

Ubisoft may be the wronged party here, but they've gone too far. Their current DRM policy is why I didn't buy AC2 even though I'm one of the few people who loved AC for what it was.

I's poor folk. $25,000 on my head is less a slap on the wrist and more a castration.

I apparently don't know much about half-way houses(I thought they were houses provided by the state for druggies to live in when they get out of rehab/prison).

Ahem, Assassin's Creed gets leaked: becomes becomes fastest selling IP before Modern Warfare 2 comes along. Sells quite well on the PC despite the long delay and complaints about repetitive gameplay.

Assassin's Creed 2 gets DRM, not because of pirates but because Ubisoft are idiots. Relatively piss-poor sales on PC despite a shorter delay before release and reports that the gameplay has improved a lot.
This is such a great overview of the situation. Just thought I'd tell you.

He deserves an extra 0 AT LEAST to be tacked on to the end of that, seeing as how he helped contribute to the rise of Ubisoft's cloud DRM.

I think many people are seeing this leak as the reason that ubisoft uses rediculous DRM, but the truth is, with or without this leak UBI is going to implement rediculous DRM, same with any other large company on the market. (EA and Spore anyone?) The problem with these large gaming conglomorates is that they are there to make money and only make money. I understand they ahve shareholders and what not, but seriously, they lost more moeny driving people away with rediculous DRM than they lose to people pirating. Mostly because those that refuse to pay for DRM with a side of game go and pirate it anyway.

They want to believe that people who want their games are willing to wade through an ocean of shit to play their game. When most people see pirating as the easier and admittedly more cost effective alternative. Hell, most of the time it's easier.

Big companies are going to do whatever it takes to guard the money they want to make and they see peope pirating the game and instantly think they are losing money with each download. Even though the reality is that they wouldn't have gained money in the first place.

While smaller sutdios want people to buy their game, but can't afford to make DRM either as a cost to them or in the cost of driving customer away. I am way mroe willing to support smaller companies who don't use oppressive amount of DRM.

All in all I don't believe DRM is necessarily bad, people have the right to protect their property, but what ubisoft is doing is rediculous. Especially since the cracked version works better and 100% of the time on or oflline.

Did they get the $10 mil from the company lawsuit?

I'm asking cause companies use lawsuits to recoup money "lost" due to piracy, and then still ***** about piracy and implement restrictive DRM. At least he got a decent sentence, as much as some people think it's too little. Countless lives are destroyed in these lawsuits, as noted by the article.

For pirating? lol. That's like jail time for having a broken tail light.
If you're talking secondary infringement maybe, but this is a primary infringement. That's like jail time for going around bashing people's tail lights in.

Posting a torrent? I don't see that as a crime at all
Well, unfortunately for you, whether you see it as one or not, the US Government sees it as a federal felony, if what you posted didn't belong to you.

Seriously, what part of the whole, "you pirate something, you're stealing it" argument didn't you understand?

The whole thing, as the argument is flawed.
I'm sorry. Taking something that someone else made, and not paying them for it. That's not theft? Really? Yeah... you might want to rethink that.

The punishment was to harsh. If anything, this gave future buyers the ability to see how shit the game is and not buy it. Thanks piracy!
...Except it ironically became the fastest selling IP for a while. Your logic imploded.

Wow. I can't believe they tracked him for a bit over 2yrs.

But only $25.000 fine, I'm surprised they didn't fine HIM to $10 million <_<
If you're an individual, you pay 25k, if you're a business, you pay 250k, if you're a corporation, you pay 2.5 million (often just in legal fees.) Justice is based on the size of your wallet.

Seems a fair sentence really, he didn't just breach copyright law, he stole from his employer and damaged his employer's reputation by doing so. I don't see 25k as a "slap on the wrist" but sure compared to some god-awful rulings such as those mentioned it makes alot more sense.

Wait a minute. You know, that title made me think: Does anyone else think that the Golden Age of Piracy would be a great setting for an Assassin's Creed game?
