Though my friend is LOVING Rouge on the PS3.
Damn right.

Everyone seems to have forgotten about Rogue, but I think it's an amazing game. Sure, it's Black Flag 1.5, but it has the same fun exploration and ship action. Everything is just a bit more polished than in Black Flag and personally I think the environments feel much more hand-crafted (fortresses for example are not as copy paste as they were, free running routes feel more flowing at times), bigger (at one point I was in a forested region that just went on and on, and I loved it) and more alive than in Black Flag. It's more of the same for the most part, but the new setting made it worthwhile for me.

I have three complaints about Rogue:
- I have run across my fair share of bugs (a couple of crashes, some texture and geometry weirdness and I got stuck in the terrain two times).
- The real-world stuff is basically the same as it was in Black Flag.
- The story is too short and doesn't introduce you to the greater part of the maps. A good half of New York I didn't even visit during the story under the assumption that the story would take me there later.

Edit: oh, forgot to mention my favorite aspects:
- You are being hunted yourself for a change. There are assassins hidden around the world ready to put a blade in your gut. The system is fairly simple, but it does give some extra tension during some missions and base take overs.
- You're playing as a Templar, so you see how the other side lives. And kudos to Ubi for not taking the easy path in making them stereotypical villains.

Caveat: Unity is the only AC game I've played myself; the others I've all backseat-driven with a friend. That said, I think Black Flag is easily the best of the recent games. They "fixed" the ship-to-ship combat, which makes the open sea stuff incredibly fun and immersive. It's a great pirate sim, and oh by the way it's also a solid Assassins Creed game. My head is full of Unity stuff since I just beat that one, but Black Flag was great and you definitely shouldn't skip it if you're a fan of the series.

I'm one of the lucky few to have had relatively little issue with Unity: some load times were punishingly long, and the Companion App is useless, but aside from some a couple of twitchy corpses and NPC's I didn't run into any clipping or weirdness. Yahtzee makes a lot of fair points in his review, but I personally thought the Rift side-missions (allowing you to visit Paris in other times) were fantastic. I really felt connected to the city, and the second rift was very compelling emotionally. I hope they do similar time-skipping things in future games. The frame plot was a bit dull, but that happens when it's just a person talking at you most of the time. The assassination missions were awesome; it really feels like solving a puzzle and getting by on your own cleverness rather than a chore to be carried out. I did feel during play that Arno didn't have a very strong personality (a common complaint for these lead guys), but I've changed my mind; aside from his slightly sarcastic bent, he's someone very invested in the people in his life who experiences a lot of tragedy and really grows from it. I'm not *saying* I cried at the ending, but I am definitely pointing fingers at whatever Ubisoft genius decided to deliver one last letter to your room post-credits... Ultimately, I think this game fits very nicely into the franchise's philosophy because of its focus on individualism -- even at the expense of the Assassin brotherhood, which is not portrayed in the greatest light. As with Rogue, you also get a more nuanced view of the Templar order, though I won't say more than that here.

3: The pace of ACIII seemed really bad compared to the first two. It was just like "GOD DAMN, WILL SOMETHING HAPPEN ALREADY" even after several hours of play.
I'm gonna go ahead and assume that this means you like the games a lot for the story or at least the characters then right?

Okay, play Black Flag. Play the ever loving shit out of the game and just enjoy all the characters. The gameplay is easy to pick up on and the intertwining of history and it's own story is fucking great (though I've been told not soo accurate, but it's already fiction so...).

As for Unity...(keep in mind, this is coming from someone who has really enjoyed AC1-2-Brotherhood-Revelations-3-4 and Rogue) it is a very poor addition to the series. The gameplay may be good, for sure, but there is so much just holding the game down other than the bugs, and most of it comes down to the writing. Arno is an alright character, but in comparison to all the previous characters he's just really not that great. The man is a pompous douche for most of the game and he never really has a moment where he does something that would make you say, "Okay, he's a pretty likeable dude). I understand that you could colour Altair, Ezio, Connor and Edward the same way, but they all were given reasons for being dicks at certain points and they had redeeming qualities. Altair was an arrogant prick because of how good he was, but you grew to like him as he begun to see how much of a bastard he was being and when he apologized for his fuck up, it felt sincere. Ezio was a dick, but his charisma and genuine love for his family were what made him really likeable. Connor was very serious and could be brash, but the dude's mother was burnt alive in front of him when he was like 5 so... However doing the homestead missions and watching how he interacts with his people showed how he was actually someone with a decent heart. And with Edward he was relatable because most of his poor attributes were brought about by aspirations that most people can agree with.

Arno just...has none of that. Yeah, he lost his father when he was young and when you play as him as a young adult he has some charisma, but he never at one point has a scene which explains why I should like the character. He's just really...bland/samey/average/generic...

As for the Story, the Revolution is really just used as a background for the story that you're given, and even then the story is somewhat disjointed, poorly paced and short. I understand co-op is a big feature, but the single player story is probably 4 hours long if you take out the missions which are literally, "Speak to this guy...mission complete".

TL;DR:
Unity:
Too many cooks in the kitchen
Straw that broke the camel's back

Black Flag:
Great

The problem with Black Flag is it's a pirate game disguised as an Assassin's Creed game. Don't like boats? Well too bad, chump! You're gonna do some BOAT COMBAT followed by some BOAT STEALTH followed by MORE BOAT COMBAT.

That said, I see AC3 as the greatest game in the series. A rushed mess with a story which jumps all over the place because the devs kept replacing game content with voiceovers, but a brilliant game regardless.

AC1 was a very repetitive game. The tower climbing was awful.
AC2 was decent, but had a terrible collectathon quest in the middle of the story.
Brotherhood/Revelations are more of the same. The beginning of Ubisoft's attempt to stretch AC's story over as many games as possible.
AC3 is buggy and divisive.
AC: Liberation is okayish.
AC4 is divisive because pirate stuff.
Unity is (currently) buggy and divisive. The mission structure is heavily improved over previous games with far less padding.
