Hi all

I am getting a PS3 soon, and I really like open world rpg's, massive world scale, epic fights, in depth character build and levelling, basically like Skyrim (i played +20hrs on pc), except I know that Skyrim is bugged to all hell and dlc is a joke with PS3.
So my question to you all out there, what game can you recommend that might fill that gap, of equal epic proportion?

Dragon's Dogma is the only thing that really jumps to mind. Dark Souls has a different style of Epic, in that it's a bit smaller, but the boss fights are nuts.

Hmm.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a great title that has good action (if you choose to play it that way) and a very deep but very balanced skill system.

Shadow of the Colossus (there's an HD re-release, so try to get that one) has the largest scale of battles you will ever see in video games, bar none.

Infamous and Infamous 2 have great (though comparatively small) open worlds. They also have very good writing and the character levelling is fun, though not the deepest.

Dragon Age: Origins is probably your best overall bet, since Skyrim is similar to it, but Origins was handled by people who actually know what the fuck they're doing, as opposed to Bethesda. Great levelling system, massive and completely new open world, a lore system that doesn't aggressively discourage you from exploring it, and some truly great DLC. DLC gets maligned a lot these days, especially from BioWare games, but this was before EA completely got their hooks in them. Dargon Age: Origins: Awakenings (yes, that's the actual title) is probably one of the best DLCs in recent memory.

Haven't played Red Dead Redemption or Dark Souls, so I can't speak to them, but they might also have what you're looking for.

Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon's Dogma
Dark Souls
Dishonored
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Those are the top 5 that come to mind, for me. Amalur's the only one that's 'massive world' like Skyrim is but they're all reasonably large games. All of them, save for Dishonored perhaps, will consume at least 35+ hours. They'll take considerably longer if you take the time to do all the side stuff, and even longer still if you want to explore. Dishonored is the only one that doesn't have a character creator, but you choose how Corvo plays, how style of battle, his style of traversing the area, everything.

If you're into RPGs, none of these games will be a disappointment to you.

Honestly, the game-breaking bugs in Skyrim have been fixed bypassed for PS3. You have to turn off all autosave functions and delete/download the patch again. Now it's like all the other platform versions: it only crashes every 15 minutes instead of every 15 seconds.

Actually, no, it works quite well. Finished the game and everything and no I didn't find all the gorran Daedric artifacts!

I've probably sunk more hours into Fallout New Vegas than any other PS3 game. It does freeze up rather often though, so save quite a bit.

The Mass Effect Trilogy came out recently, so that's a good series to fill your RPG needs.

Most of my other recommendations have already been mentioned, so I'll try to think of something a little different. Do you like JRPG's? If so, I recommend Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. The art is gorgeous, and the music is great, really giving off a sense of adventure. I absolutely love the game's world; it feels odd in a charming and whimsical sort of way, and is populated by interesting creatures, which you can use in combat along with the main party members. I also love all the puns in the game, but others might not as much :p

As for games that have already been mentioned, I definitely recommend Dragon Age: Origins, the Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon's Dogma, Dark Souls, and Fallout 3/New Vegas.

If you liked skyrim, Fallout is a safe bet.
Mass effect 1 is bioware storytelling and world building at their best- the fights are epic in a sort of pause-start points kind of way
Dragon age origins I still have to play but people love it as much as mass effect

Deus ex:HR for a stealth, action, rpg (leveling/story elements/hub cities) game- it does not have 'epic fights' though (except the odd boss fight/ambush)

Dark souls/Demons soul; i think the world is pretty vast(interweaving level layout and paths to completely different areas) but not so much dialogue-it focuses on immersing you via tone, atmosphere and killing you. pretty cool but niché

As you said 'Epic fights' You might be interested in non rpg's;
uncharted 2 is a PS3 must play. It's one big cinematic epic set piece after the next with good pacing

btw I played skyrim fine on PS3- There were frame rate drops when riding a horses at full speed but that's about it

I Really enjoyed darksiders 2. It had a good art style and the world is nothing if not epic. the combat, especially in boss fights is epic. It has dungeons much like zelda, but with a more god of war style combat. It also has a good random loot drop system and plenty of worlds to explore, so it's quite long. I hope you check it out, maybe rent it or try a demo.

I could also recommend okami. I think they have an hd release of it now. Originally a ps2 game but it may suit your tastes.

The fallout games are amazing, same with Mass Effect. Skyrim DLC is coming out soon too btw, however I'd suggest Assassin's Creed. Less RPG but more stabbing people so that's fine.

Skyrims bugs don't depend on your copy, they are based on how it saves stuff regarding npcs. If you don't spend much time in towns, avoid talking or dealing with npcs too much, and turn off autosave you'll have a lot less problems. Still utterly broken and bullshit that they're selling something in such a state, but some people don't encounter as many issues.

I'd recommend Dragon's Dogma and Two Worlds 2. The first Two Worlds was a horrid, but the second is alright. Wouldn't call it a great game, but it's passable.

Fallout has the same issues on PS3 as Skyrim.

Dark Souls isn't really a massive world though.

Dragons Dogma somewhat is, but 20 hours in I really did get tired of walking everywhere.

Skyrim being bugged on PS3 is completely dependent on your copy. My copy never fucked up. Not to mention you have to spend atleast 60 hours to enjoy most of what the game has to offer. I'd recommend other Bethesda games. Deus Ex HR is also similar for a good RPG, while not massive world it's still great gameplay wise.

Perhaps maybe Red Dead Redemption?
I wouldn't recommend the PS3 version of Oblivion, runs kinda shitty. The Fallout games are crash-prone but otherwise fine.

I recommend Deus Ex, Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout 3, maybe NV but idk never played.

And it's not related at all but damn it play RESISTANCE 3 :D

I don't care if it's not an RPG it is a must play for all PS3 owners.

I need them artifcats but I think I killed an essential character for one of them in Dawnstar .____.

That and I need to pickpocket another 40 times or so to get me the Platinum...

After 300 hours I experience some spazzy framerates sometimes in big cities but it's still easily playable.

May trydeleteing the game data from my HDD and reinstalling and downloading it now though...

The pickpocket achievement/trophy is actually pretty easy. I had a pickpocket level of maybe 38 and I think just one perk at the root of the tree. I found a sleeping bandit and continually gave/stole a relatively high-value potion. I wish I could say it was a potion of pickpocket but in reality it was just a fortify carry or one-handed I think, worth 528gp an Elixir of Strength, weighing only 0.5 and worth 571gp. Stealing gold without the specific perk isn't worth the effort, but other non-equipped stuff was easy even for a butterfingers character like mine.

That trick was found to work specifically for the PS3 version because the game would crash every time you got more than ankle-deep in water. Of course, I found that bug right before the end of the Dark Brotherhood quest line, which was totally not awesome as:
you have to swim to your objective, there's no other way.

For good open-world games... I'd recommend the Sly Cooper series... both the HD collection and the new one (haven't played it but apparently even its smallest hubs are twice the size of the largest ones in Sly 3)... all around great series with likeable characters and a pretty good sense of humor and charm.

Not an RPG, but great fun nonetheless.

I may try that but I detest pickpocketing and can never be arsed to do it for long.
My main issue is frame rate crashes at random for like 30 seconds early in play sessions but it resolves itself, it's an inconvenience, I do have it on PC but it seems a waste to leave 2 trophies unclaimed

One handed is useful, I mean dude, Dual Hand Axe, it breaks the game.

Hey, I might have to try that! I have three trophies left, yours plus I have yet to break out of jail. So two-handed axes you say? That settles it, I'm going for both two-handed axes and the Heavy Armor perk like the guy on YouTube who punches everything to death. I can't imagine I'll continue playing after getting platinum though. It's freaking exhausting.

Skyrim is really fun to just dive in and explore a whole bunch of stuff.

Yeah go down the heavy route with armor AND weapons and focus on Daedric, on the consoles Daedric is the supreme weapon and armour class with the right perks and enchanments and such. Two Daedric Hand Axes and a Dagger of Soul Stealing will decimate anything in seconds on most reasonable difficulties.

Btw, PSN ID? PM me it please :D
