Already a few good suggestions so I may repeat them.

Oblivion - The levelling can you leave you stuck if you don't watch what skills you work on. The game over all is great but it is one you need to pay attention to when it comes to skill usage.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas - Both open world, imagine Skyrim with guns.

Sacred 2 - I mention this one because I loved it. Open world and quite good character progression .... plus it's huge.

For good open-world games... I'd recommend the Sly Cooper series... both the HD collection and the new one (haven't played it but apparently even its smallest hubs are twice the size of the largest ones in Sly 3)... all around great series with likeable characters and a pretty good sense of humor and charm.

Not an RPG, but great fun nonetheless.
One of the best surprises on the PS3. Combine Hudson Hawk and Oceans Eleven with toons and you`ll get Sly and his gang. Haven`t played it on the ps2 and after all those FPS and TPS it was really refreshing and it has aged really well (cell shading- it looks way better on the PS3).

I've been playing Dragon's Dogma a lot lately. I'm really enjoying it. Especially the feel of the combat. Whether it's putting arrows though goblins from a hundred paces or clinging onto a Chimera, it just feels and sounds great. But yeah, you have to backtrack a lot and the pawns can be annoying as hell (even though they work surprisingly well in combat).

Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning really pleasantly surprised me. It's fun, colorful and has great combat. The story isn't all too great, but then again, neither is Skyrim's (or Dragon's Dogma's for that matter). Something you have to sacrifice for an open world, I suppose.

As for Skyrim itself, there has been a lot of patching for the PS3 version, and personally I think most of the problems are fixed. It's very much playable, at the very least. Personally, even though I put a lot of hours into Skyrim, I didn't like it. It just left me feeling completely empty. Not the slightest emotional involvement, because the world just seems utterly oblivious to the impact of your actions (even though they mostly consist of controlling the Draugr population in interchangeable caves and crypts). It's been called an ocean with the depth of a padling pool. I agree.

One suggestion that I forgot to mention in my first post was the Mass Effect trilogy. Holy shit, would you ever love Mass Effect. It's literally everything you're looking for in a game handled by people who love what they do and are really good at it.

(Sorry if this is a bit late, but I've been getting back into the ME games recently and it's rekindled my love for the series.)
