I hate the assumption that anonymous is a giant hacker/child-porn ring that like to hack Sony for the sole purpose of getting your credit card information. Or as soon as something gets posted about something getting hacked everyone instantly goes 'ANON DID IT!!'. Or my favourite, when some random internet media reports that a couple of 'anons' got arrested by the FBI, everyone is like 'FINALLY SOMEONE HAD TO TAKE THEM DOWN!'.
I know anonymous has earned no love among you guys but they can do great things as well when they put their minds and organisation skills to it, for example try searching on YouTube for Project Chanology. :) Also check out Extra Credits' vid about anonymous it's pretty good as well.
Don't know what the point of this post is because I know I will have people instantly post 'hurr derrp hackerzzz'. Oh well I will add to the discussion I suppose...

Personally I hate the fact that tons of people people assume that because something is very popular, it's good for everyone.

Examples, particularly in the social realm: going out drinking or to parties, dating and marriage.

If you don't do these things, people spend all their time trying to convince you that your life will be better if you do. There are 6+ billion people in the world: not everyone enjoys life the same way.

Oh and anyone who assumes that "the kiss hello" is OK, despite barely knowing you, is an enemy of mine.

I hate it when people assume that I'm trying to lay the blame on something/someone else for something that Went wrong in my life. I mention I have aspergers in a relevant conversation=people start assuming I'm trying to lay the blame on that. I mention, even jokingly, my distaste at my permanent lack of a girlfriend, I'm supposedly suddenly blaming it on every female who ever lived. I complain about the job market, and of course, people instantly say I'm looking for an excuse not to improve my employability.
Yeah I totally agree with you buddy. I've had people tell me off just like that, about the exact same things every time I talk about them.
"No I'm not saying dating is stupid! I'm simply commenting that I DON'T HAVE A GIRLFRIEND! Girls don't like me, and I'm not blaming them. It's not their fault, I'm simply not attractive to most. It's just how it is. That's that."

On Topic:
An assumption that I absolutely hate? People think that just because I'm a geeky quiet type, don't go to dances, am in Band Class, etc. that I only listen to jazz or classical music. They assume that my ears are too tender or something to listen to anything like rock/metal.
It so happens that I'm lead guitarist in a rock band (and I'm pretty good, and VERY loud) and when people find this out they're like "WTF? Since when are you a rock star?"

Another one on the quiet geeky goody-two-shoes topic... People instantly assume that because I'm a generally polite and kind person, it means I never swear. Then if I actually talk and drop an F bomb they're like "Holy man! Where'd the language come from?".
Just because I don't talk to YOU doesn't mean I never talk. When I do I generally swear quite often. (You should hear me playing video games :p )

I get asked if I play Basketball
Every. Single. Fucking. Time.

I may be tall but that doesn't mean I have anything to do with a sport I used to play now-a-days.

I hate when people assume my anxiety/social panic is me being rude because I want to be, or that I'm angry with them when I'm actually beating myself up on the inside.

It's a less serious one, but when people assume everyone from Texas owns a ranch and rides horses to school.
You know who else owned a ranch and rode horses to school?

<spoiler=You are about to gaze upon a very beautiful man>http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/13/MalReynoldsFirefly.JPG
No seriously, his mom owned a ranch and he would ride horses in his youth. In my opinion though, you should milk this assumption for everything it's worth.

An assumption I dislike is that ignorant people are somehow worse than us.

No, they aren't. They're just ignorant, and you should see this as a chance to inform them properly. They do wonderful, helpful things to people in general. When you find out that they are homophobic, don't freak out about it. Just calmly ask why, and explain why you think they are wrong. I've seen way too many examples where someone basically used this assumption to further an argument that ended up in the person she was criticizing for being homophobic to just shut herself out to anything outside. Just be nice, guys.

Another assumption I don't like, is that people with firearms are lunatics or paranoid. It's a nice hobby, and if the need to defend my household does arise, even better.

Oh, one more. That video games are not capable of being art. Granted, I can understand why, but every time I make this argument to my friends, they just seem to ignore me (Most of their experience with gaming usually takes place in the form of platformers, multiplayer games, and MMOs).

While I disagree with the dating and marriage part not being enjoyable (I'm dating someone who I plan to marry, but then you did say that you yourself weren't a fan so this mentioning is somewhat pointless), I do firmly agree with the drinking and partying part being stupid.

My dad, having been an alcoholic, has completely turned me off of the idea of alcoholic beverages (Even though my mom keeps trying to get me to try it even though she knows why I won't), and from what I've seen of most large parties, they just encourage negative behavior. I'll get a small group of friends together, and we'll have a few sodas, play a game or two, talk and laugh, all that stuff. That's a good party for me.

I like Halo.
Hence I must be an undereducated, obnoxious, drunken fratboy who yells 'dude' all the time and makes racist remarks in my squeaking voice on online matches and must only like games like Halo and Madden.
That one really pisses me off.

I support feminism
Doesn't mean I want to chop off men's balls. Just because I support one thing does not mean I automatically revile something else.

Ashley (Mass Effect) has trust issues with aliens
Does not mean that she is some kind of redneck neo nazi conservative who deserves to die for it. She has a lot more depth then people give her credit for.

I don't like the level of dumb offensive humor in things like Duke Nukem Forever
Hence I must just be a pretentious toolbag who would only like something if it's 'arty'.

I'm an athiest
Therefore I must hate all people of all faith.

These ones all continue to annoy me.
I wasn't aware that Duke Nukem assumption existed. Could've sworn it was a given that what's there is more or less niche humor. I don't get out much.

Still, very much agreed on those, especially the one concerning Ashley. God forbid a human displays caution around aliens when coming across aliens who hate humans is nowhere near a rare occurrence in that universe.

That because I'm 15 I can't be taken seriously, and I'm a complete idiot. This comes up way too often, I raided in wow for a good 2 years, half the guilds on the server wouldn't let me in, and the other half was constantly concerned that I'd get everybody killed, even while I'm out-preforming the rest of the party. This also goes for TF2 and other competitive games.

Let's see...

I don't like when people (you know who you are) assume that all Americans are loud, ignorant, and gun crazy. We're not all like that.

Most atheists are not god hating nihilists, none worship Satan and its wrong for people to assume so.

Also one that really bugs me, not all gamers are fat socially awkward nerds with no social lives.

He probably meant to say something along the lines of since he doesn't like germs more than other people, causing him to act a little similar to a germaphobe, he must be afraid of germs.

An analogy might be I don't like spiders and would rather someone else take them outside, so I must be afraid of them. However, if no one else is present or willing I will take care of it without any issues.

When someone is accusing me of being a screwball when really they just don't understand my terminology.
Someone assuming I'm really a total clean freak, and I have a filthy computer room. (So many Dr Pepper cans...)
Someone saying that I'm a pervert just because I'm not creeped out at all by 'sexual education'.
Assumptions of me being a crybaby because of hating most recent games, and do not try to hide it.
The claim that I must be good at making friends, but I don't have any non-gamer friends.
Whenever people say anything about the "2012 doomsday" theory, I just want to puke.
Assumptions about games that I like which are based on no evidence whatsoever....

"There are two things that are infinite. The universe... And human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe..." -Albert Einstein

I agree Einstein. I agree.
