If you are on a budget and like the Eyefinity technology then go with ATI even though you can't be on a budget if you have 3 monitors.

I prefer the NVIDIA PhysX Technology partly because I cannot be asked to have 3 monitors and I like my in-game physics.

ATi cards do great with physics engines. All Nvidia did was patent a name for theirs specifically to make you think that their cards are the only ones that can handle physics. Complete bunk.

Actually PhysX belongs to Ageia (2002) who were then aquired by Nvidia (2008)

All support PhysX engine and SDK, PhysX has full Software support not just GPU acceleration really anything that understands x87 instructions can run it, and is the standard physics middleware in unreal engine 3.

ATi orginally planned to do GPU accelerated physics with HavockFX but never bothered

general-purpose computing on graphics processing units has now been standardised with DirectCompute so things like CUDA (vendor specific) are dead in the water anyway

my laptop runs on ati and my pc runs on nvidia. both work well.so no complains here.

I do have to say that I'm a little ticked off with ATI. The recent drivers for ATI have been very bad. I'm still using the 10.5 drivers for my dual 4800, and they work far better than any of the other "recent" drivers released by ATI.

It's up to you. Please don't turn this into another "nVidia 4 life yo" or "ATI all the way dawg" thread. I've seen enough of those to last a lifetime.

I mean think about it, if you saw two people passionately arguing over which brand of washing machine is better than the other, you'd think they were insane! No one proudly says that they're "Bosche for life" or a "whirlpool foot soldier".

By all means argue over which company produces better cards. But to get so passionate and heated about it, as I've seen on other forums, is.... is.... is.... it's INSANE!! It's a graphics card! Why do people get so worked up over something so trivial?

Because people want to justify how they waste their money. They wasted it better than you did.

It's misinformation because it's wrong. Not because you're doing it on purpose. ATI does not make their cards, they make the chipsets. The individual manufacturers that place the chipset on the cards are who get blamed for poor design and overheating. Nvidia cards have the same issues. As the manufacturers take plenty of liberties, and overclock some cards then put inefficient heatsinks on them, just to make more profit.

Either way, ATI is not where blame lies.

As far as I know Nvidia's PhysX thing will work on any graphics card, it just works on Nvidia cards better.


I honestly have no preference, neither one has any issues or any major advantages. Right now I have a Raedon 4850 (Which might be upgraded to an Nvidia something-or-other at some point)

The only problem is Borderlands has some sort of holy war against my graphics card because I am the only one in my group of friends having issues running the game.

I am also the only one in my group of friends with an ATI card.

The 5000 series and 6000 series cards run cooler than the nVidia 400 series counterparts. That's a known fact. You are, in fact, spreading misinformation.

Also, any computer with a decent processor and GPU can run BFBC2, and that game features fully destructible environments. And it doesn't need an nVidia GPU to accelerate it either. nVidia's choice to make their PhysX acceleration support a purely proprietary technology is one of the reasons why I went with ATi on my newest build.

go to Tom's Hardware and pick the recommended card in your price range unless:

you have a particular need for cuda or 3d gaming, I believe SLI scaling works slightly better than crossfire too. If any of these things are on your roster, go for a Nvidia card. Just make sure your power supply can handle it. All modern Graphics cards are absolute power hogs under load.

I think ATI/AMD cards tend to be slightly better priced if you don't plan on using multi-card setups.

If you want a high or mid range card the best bet bang for buck is ATI, nvidia is struggling a little at the moment and they only shine on the top end cards, but those are just for throwing away money.
But there is no denying ATI was always weak on drivers, I mostly go with 3rd party drivers that someone has refined and worked out the kinks.

In my opinion, I say NVidia is better for software, and ATI is better for hardware. Still, it's your choice, choose the ones with the specs you're after and away ye go.
