Ive been keeping up to date as I build computers to make myself a bit of extra cash.

As of now AMD has better performance for your money than Nvidia although with Nvidia you get PhysX which is good for games that use PhysX but not the equivalent AMD physics for some things.

If you go for a new AMD 68xx card you will be able to have 3D, it is no longer limited to Nvidia cards although monitor support for AMD 3D is rather low at the moment but will improve after a short wait.

My personal recommendation is only go for an Nvidia card if you want the best possible single GPU card (the GTX 580) or a mid-range card with PhysX (the GTX 460 or below). The rest tend to get really hot and use lots of power. Anything made by AMD will normally be better performing than the Nvidia cards at the same price.

If you can be patient to wait for more of the Nvidia 5xx cards to come out then you will most likely be happy with them as they seem to have fixed the problems with Fermi with the GTX 580.

The new AMD 69xx cards have been delayed but the 68xx cards are doing well and are well priced for what you get.

hmm, still hard to choose, which chipset has a better card for around 150?
IMO the ATI cards around that price are superior to the nVidia cards around that price.
This is coming from someone who has had an nVidia card in his last 3 PCs.

ATI are cheap and effective and Nvidia is Costly but compatible and sometimes games with Physx technology are awesome(Mafia 2,Have seen the physx!?)

modern ATI since the 4000 series have really shined over nvidia's counterparts, it seems there is an ebb and flow to which is better, for now its ati, I'm not sure if the latest have switched, but both are good.
nVidia rocked ATI up until about two years ago, ATI edged slight ahead, when nVidia seemed to be stuck in rut releasing cards as new series that might as well have been the X900 series. Then nVidia pulled ahead, now they are both basically neck and neck with ATI currently offering the best bang for your buck.

ok, Im starting to lean to nvidia... well contintue to lean that way since I still know the nvidia number and letter system and ati's is a mystery to me
Heres where its at now:

Mid range: 57xx cards with 5770 being the highest

High range: 58xx cards with 5870 being the highest single GPU card and at the top is the 5890 which is a duel GPU card

you also get the lower end card groups like the 56xx cards. Dont bother with these for gaming.

The 6xxx series (replacing the 5xxx series) has just started to come through and has changed the naming slightly

So far we have the 68xx cards, specifically the 6850 and 6870.
The 6870 sits perfectly between the 5850 and 5870. This is because the 68xx group will be the new mid range and the high end range will now be the 69xx group.

There is a whole lot of marketing reasons for the change but it really comes down to AMD not wanting to screw up the sales of their 5770 card by releasing a 6770 card as the 5770 is still selling really well. So they have made the next gen top-of-the-mid-range card the 6870 instead of the 6770.

Of course the best way to figure it out is look at the order they list it on the website and to look at benchmarks and prices to figure out where everything stands.

Nvidia, my 9800gtx still can run most games on highest setting (not all with aa) also physx is pretty cool. I'm gonna wait for dx12 till I get a new one.

I recommend tomshardware.com it's has some great comparisons

Whatever, just wash your hands.
does physX really add that much to games? is there really much noticeable

keep in mind Im still rocking xp so Im stuck with dx9 and not sure how well that even supports physX

well I checked some vids of metro 2033 that compared physX without and it is noticeable but does xp really support it well?
