Atlus "Dissolved" by Parent Company

Japanese RPG developer/publisher Atlus has been "dissolved" by its parent company, though precisely what this means is uncertain.

According to a report from 1UP [http://www.1up.com/news/atlus-disolved-parent-company], Index Holdings - the parent company of Persona maker Atlus - ended Atlus' existence as an independent entity earlier Monday, August 30th. Index had apparently been making business decisions for the publishing house for some time, and with this move seems to be internalizing Atlus' development team.

While this may sound big and scary on paper, particularly for Atlus' rather devoted fan base, it's unclear just how much is changing on the development end. According to a press statement, the Atlus brand will continue to exist regardless of the state of Atlus the corporate entity, and Katsura Hashino, director of Atlus' recently-announced Catherine [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102879-Persona-Creators-Announce-Adult-Oriented-Catherine-for-PS3-360], posted a message that indicated his team was unaffected by the change.

Also unclear is the fate of Atlus' publishing duties outside of Japan. Atlus was responsible for bringing last year's sleeper hit Demons' Souls to the West when nobody else would touch it, and many gamers would probably be very sad indeed to see the company vanish forever - particularly when there hadn't been any indications that Atlus had ever been in major trouble financially.

We've reached out to Atlus USA for an official comment on the matter.

Well, I guess that's what happens when you build your company on the mistranslation that excessive difficulty means fun.

...but I like Atlus games...

I hope this doesn't actually have any effect on anything important.

I'm glad it seems little will change...at least, I hope that's what's being said.

I will hear no insults on the company that localized Arcana Heart!

Especially not while I continue to wait for them to do the sequels. I have a little prayer card right next to my Duke Nukem Forever shrine.

FREAK OUT CENTRAL. This had better not negatively impact the SMT series... or anything else Atlus publishes. They're my favorite publisher in the goddamn industry.

And if anything bad happens to the translation team, I'll adopt them myself and keep them in my dorm. Those people are godsends to the institution of JRPGs.

Damn, this better not stop the development of Catherine.

Plus, Atlus was a pussy for not releasing Demon's Souls in Europe, so I guess I feel slightly satisfied. Yay...

Atlus dies. Studio Ghibli is in trouble.

Activision and Dreamworks just keep on going.

As Hubert Farnsworth said, "I don't want to live on this planet anymore."

It means their constituent molecules have disassociated into an aqueous solution. Badum-tish.

Lame joke is lame. Sorry, I've just woken up, so I'm not thinking straight, and I couldn't help myself. Anway, OT, I guess it's pretty sad, but I must admit I don't really know any games made by Atlus. I only know they published Demon's Souls, but they only did that for America, so I really don't care. As long as the devs keep their jobs and continue making obscure games I don't know about, then I guess all is well in the world.
