I've been having trouble with audio within certain games for my pc. The main issue is that its generally cut out and just lets out crackles and screeches. I don't have this problem for all games though.

I run windows 7 professional 64bit. The issue started after the change from 32bit to 64bit. A necessary change as I had upgraded to 4Gb RAM and do quite a bit of virtual machine work.

I have tried different audio drivers with no changes in results.
I tried a reformat incase it was a bad install, no result.
I bought a proper audio card since I use the onboard one. All it did was spread the issues across everything.
I've tried using different output ports, no change.

Of the games I play, I get the issue in the following:
fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas
Oblivion
Worms Reloaded
Saints Row 2

The following games I can play perfectly fine.
L4D2
Mount & Blade Warband
Team fortress 2
Sid Meiers Civilization 5
Portal
Portal 2

Machine specs
AMD Phenom II B50 quad core (dual core 550 unlocked)
4Gb DDR3 1333Mhz
Nvidia Gt 240 1Gb (gimped ddr3 edition)
Motherboard: Asus M4A79XTD EVO
Windows 7 professional 64bit

Have you tried it with different Audio devices like Speakers, headphones etc?

It's possible it might be the way you've wired it in. I know when I first put my PC together I wired in the old Artec98 plug instead of the other one.

Yeah, I've tried 2 different sets of speakers and 2 sets of headphones, no differences in the audio.

I've also checked the connections in the machine and everything is fine.

I'm sure you've done this already, but did you disable onboard audio for the sound card?

Yeah, I made sure and did that.

I have tried a few places to get an answer and help with this, but so far there doesn't seem to be a solution other than downgrading to 32bit, which I'm not willing to do.
