I know the escapist isn't the ideal rap fans. I enjoy it from time to time but I have been recently getting sick of the mainstream shit I have here in the USA. Recently I found some stuff called Aussie rap.

I gotta hand to it Australia its alright. Better than a lot of the R&B shit I have here in America.

Kinda reminds me of our actual party culture we have here. Thats what I like about it. The songs are about having fun in ways that are actually possible like house parties and bars.

Most of the rap here is for wannabee thugs who wanna line the "high life." This is just about wanting to have fun.

EDIT: Rap haters don't even bother posting. If you are some stuck up hipster or metalhead or don't have the slightest tolerance for rap than just stop and click the back tab.

Thats not entirely true. If we can claim AC/DC then we can probably claim the John Butler Trio as well.

Australian beat producers mostly hate the R&B and dancehall flavoured influences that have crept into American rap, most Aussie rap beats sound like they were made in 1993, and that's a completely self-conscious and deliberate decision on their part.

As for the rappers, this is definitely one of the better examples. Funkoars and (especially) Hilltop Hoods are some of the only MCs right now that are actually making a sustainable living in Australia out of rapping. They have industry smarts and sensible management which helps. On the plus side the "gangster" culture simply doesn't exist here, and people who admire that culture are looked down on as tryhards, so MCs who rap about it just look fuckin' stupid and no-one buys their records when they can buy the American stuff anyway if they want. On the negative side, a lot of Australian rap has a really condescending "here are some lessons about my hard life, here is my worldy wisdom" tone, which I guess is fair enough because it's mainly teenage delinquents who buy the shit, but I'm older so it's just annoying to me.
