The only aussie rap I've heard is the Herds' cover of I was only 19. I preffered the original, but frankly I'm more of a fan of other (read: real) kinds of music, but someone else may enjoy it.

It's pretty good, interesting stuff. The background filler does get a little repetitive though, the horns are good for the first 40 seconds but get boring by the end. I'm all for rap mixed up with more instrumentals, but you have to change it up a bit to keep it interesting. In most rap, because there is less instrumentals your ears focus on the rapping automatically and so it doesn't matter if the rest is a little repetitive. Once you have a very prominent little riff going the repetitiveness becomes a problem.

Kinda reminds me of our actual party culture we have here. Thats what I like about it. The songs are about having fun in ways that are actually possible like house parties and bars.

Most of the rap here is for wannabee thugs who wanna line the "high life." This is just about wanting to have fun.
I don't listen to much rap at all, but this might be more up your alley thematically:

They should make a genre called Australian rap :D.
My mates and I refer to it as "Aussie Hip Hop". We already think of it as it's own separate subgenre.

BTW Kiwi Hip Hop is pretty good too.

They've got pretty good flow.

The beat is kinda weak, though.

There is definitely some potential there. A good remix could turn this into
a hot club tune.

Not bad, Australia. Respect.

i wouldn't call it rap...i hate the term.
i like alot of hilltop hoods stuff. but not all of it. i think you'd have more luck with new zealand rap groups. the kiwi's seem to have some misguided empathy with african american culture. well the maoari's at any rate. most "australian" rap is just imported kiwi's or that one american guy who never went back, i forget his name but he's not bad.

australia has a habit of keeping visitors, the snakes and spiders aren't actually as dangerous as people think. and the flight home tends to take too long so they just stay.

It's interesting - in Australia, people either love Aussie rap or they completely despise it with a burning passion. I'm willing to admit that I sit in the "despise" camp. I've met Funkoars (and Hilltop) because they come from my town, but I've only met them in passing, I've never really talked to them because I have no desire to, I have nothing to say to people who make that kind of music for a living. Their manager is a cool dude though, I can talk to him all day, same for the guy who did the string arrangements on the Hilltop orchestral album. But god please spare me from having actual conversations with any Aussie rap MCs... having said that, I'd reluctantly spit out a few words to them if I was being paid to but thankfully the people I work for hate that type of music too so I don't have any direct involvement in that scene. I must be grateful for small mercies.

I can see why people like it though, so that's why I don't go on a big flame-fest. If people dig it that's cool. I'd like Aussie rap more if it wasn't Australian - I'd like to see American rap with more retro beats like the Aussie stuff. But I always feel more comfortable about admiring MCs if there's a nice few thousand miles of water between me and them.

Question: I've heard the term, "Maori Rap" dropped quite a bit. Any word on that?

maoari's are the very large native kiwilanders. they look like african americans who benchpress busses. they are not built for africa's heat and flat expanses.

like i said they have some weird empathatic link with african american rap which makes no sense as they're about as far removed from that culture as you can get. most australian rap is actually kiwi's who never went back to kiwiland.

I'm not a massive rap fan in the first place so I'll try hard to be as objective as possible when I say Aussie rap is usually shit.I'll use this as a blanket statement that I'll stand by.

They usually sound like a bunch of whinging pussies, complaining about shit in a country that has plenty of opportunities for self advancement,a stable economy, great climate and environments,is basically a pretty safe place to live and raise a family. All very acheivable if you want it.Not really the kind of place where you can justify a militant anti-social background. Not to mention they've always copied the tone and content of U.S rap to the point of using American accents when they rap.

Recently though, some Aussie rap I've heard on the radio is actually kind of alright!
Their lyrics are starting to sound alot more introspective, leaving the cliches behind, and they seem to be incorporating alot more of a live band feel to the music,as in an actual band, not just samples over repetative beats.
So I guess I agree with the OP.
Evolution seems to have worked on the rap genre in Australia.Time and distance have finally produced an offshoot that is even strating to hook myself just a bit,a mainly rock/metal listener. It definatley not all bad to my ears anymore, though its mostly still derivitive crap out there.

I think it's horrible, like most Aussie Music.
We havn't produced anything worthwhile since AC/DC.
Airbourne, killing heidi, the living end, spiderbait, little birdy .....<insert really, really long list> all disagree.

Aussie rap is just as meh as others, I like some songs but in general I treat it with the same contempt I treat American rap.

I'm guessing that great climate comment is based of inexperience, having several days in a row all of 45 degrees Celsius is not in line with the general idea of 'great' weather. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the famous Australian poem 'Fuck it's hot' or not, but I assure you it's based soundly on fact. Even if you hate the cold the Australian climate is unforgiving, if nothing else (retarded politicians, third world public transport, 19th century road laws and an invisible police force withstanding) we at least have the obscene heat to complain about.

I prefer Aussie rap to American rap or any other country. The lyrics are generally far better, and the alternative rhythm is a nice change, like what Bliss n Eso implemented in The Dark Tower.

Yes, it really is for most of us, who do not live on the coast. Melbourne and Sydney being the most heavily populated cities in the country, each expanding some 50kms from the CBDs which are not on the coast, both cities are built on (well, very near) bays so there is none of the cool ocean breezes. In Melbourne, it's worsened of course be the crippled air con in public transport that cannot cope on days above 35 degrees (like, for example every fucking day in December, January and February). Seriously, even being on the (southern) coast isn't so helpful, as most of the killer hot days have little wind.

Look, while it does shit me how people in the music industry constantly whine about stupid pointless stuff, I can't bear to sit idly by while somebody claims that I live in a "great climate" when, for several months a year, the temperature doesn't drop low enough for anyone to sleep comfortably (without air-conditioning). A normal person would consider a 'great climate' to be mild, maybe mid teens at night and getting up to mid 30s during the day (though even that would probably be too hot for most people).

Don't be a dick, brah, rock is just as good as anything. Not any rock today, atleast, but in the 70's, HELL YES.
