STATE censorship ministers have thrown cold water on Labor's plan to establish a video game category for adults.

The plan was rejected at a meeting of the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General (SCAG) in Canberra today.

Computer gaming industry lobby groups have argued that the rating is needed to protect children from adult content but the Australian Christian Lobby, which welcomed the decision, disagreed.

ACL managing director Jim Wallace said that the gaming lobby's claims were motivated by profit.

"This is about serving the interests of an industry that is purely profit-driven and it's absolutely disingenuous for it to try to pretend that it wants an R18 rating to protect children," Mr Wallace said.
My sympathies to all those in Australia.

Yes! How dare these video game companies want to see their adult orientated games released! How dare they want to make a profit and a living off their hard work!

This is quite frankly one of the single most idiotic things I have ever read.

Meh I respect the Attorneys-Generals decision if I don't agree with it.
I'm more mad at the Christian Lobby group who are keeping the R-18 rating down by saying that it's not there to 'protect the children' and it's only there to make a profit.

Yes, because children are going to be playing R-18 games. Just like how they're going to be regularly watching R-18 movies.

I thought This would stop being a fucking issue since Atkinson left. How many idiots are there in the government.

Actually, don't answer that question. The response would probably depress me.

Argh, MY COUNTRY IS GOING DOWN THE POOPER!

...Another reason to move to the U.S for me

Australia can be so cool in some aspect, but it's outweighed by some many retarded things! My brain is bleeding right now! I'm amazed it's the only thing bleeding

For me not by a long shot, still fucking stupid though.

Does anybody understand their logic even a little?
I mean gamers want it, game companies want it and it would help the government regulate them anyway, this utter lack of comprehensible logic only serves to confuse and infuriate everybody.

The only people that actually want there to be no R18 is them themselves, LISTEN TO YOUR PEOPLE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE A DEMOCRACY!

QUICK! Someone find me a 15 year old who has become violent and aggressive caused by any of the GTA Games! QUICK!
That'll show the SCAGs that...Ahh, who am I kidding? That'll just end up in shambles like every other rationed argument against the government.

Another thing I found funny, is that when said out loud, the acronym SCAG sounds like Skag.
You know? Those little mutant dog things that are the easiest enemy in borderlands? Just a thought.

They did just not the people you want them to listen to.
Actually no, they don't.

They just refuse out of hand without a vote of any kind, the closest was a poll awhile ago asking if the people wanted an R18 rating when it was overwhelmingly in favour of they (Atkinson) Said that the poll didn't count because only people that wanted one would vote-.

They know there is nobody that activly wants there to NOT be one exept for them.

They didn't reject it, they postponed making any final call on it until next year. It's as good as rejecting it but with that sliver of hope that has made this so fun/frustrating to follow.

The reasons: Basically it's heading into the holiday season and the state and territory attorneys general decided against tackling that issue heading into the holidays. As I said they will revisit the issue next year, (although they haven't said when.)

Basically this is a massive cop-out and to be frank, lazniess on the part of the politicians. Do they not realise that groups like Electronic Frontiers Australia actually work towards stuff like this, (and have been doing so for some time)? Once again video games have suffered and once again they have been considered a fringe form of entertainment, not important enough for a decent decision.

Not being Australian, (a Kiwi, I work for an Aussie firm - which basically means I don't get public holidays other than ANZAC Day,) I can't take to the streets but I would advise Aussie gamers to really speak out about the issue and get in touch with groups like EFA to support them and get your voice heard - especially those above the age of 18, the older the better. Also writing to the local attorney general would be a good step - if you don't know what to write just echo the stance of EFA.

We all know that eventually an R18+ rating will be implimented it's just taking a while. The more sensible action taken the faster this thing will move along.

Got to say games like Splatterhouse, (the review of which I just watched on here,) is basically just giving the anti-game lobby ammunition... but oh well. That's the nature of the beast. :/

My condolences to all our Australian Escapists and non-Escapists. I can't believe that the people in office are STILL afraid of games. In every part of the world, not just Australia. I can't wait to hear how the US Supreme Court votes on these things...

Last time I checked the ACL's members are Australian citizens and they're against the R18 rating.
So the minority gets to dictate what the majority have the right to, especially a minority that likley knows little to nothing about the subject at hand?

Great democracy.

No, they want to create more adult games and not have to water them down for teenagers. The end result is exactly the same, the games that would be watered down and sold to teens are now uncensored BUT kept out of their hands.
