Mine too is poor.

At best i can get 500kb/s download speed. (rarely, most of the time its 250-300). I have ADSL2+ from iinet and its supposed to be 5 megabits per second (according to the speed test i just ran). At least i have a 50gig cap.

My pings 27ms.

edit- just used the test that above posters have

Test run on 26/06/2011 @ 10:51 PM

Mirror: iiNet
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 15.93 secs

Your line speed is 4.75 Mbps (4745 kbps).
Your download speed is 593 KB/s (0.58 MB/s)

As i said before, i rarely see it get above 300 when downloading something.

Yup, Australia's internet service blows. Using speed test, my connection speed clocks in at 4.79Mb/s. My download speed at it's best is between 150KB-200KB per second, but right now for some reason, it's about 80 KB/s =\

Internet is just bad here it seems. I've never reached the megabytes per second as long as I can remember. This has been with IInet and Telstra. I really can't see why it isn't faster.

What you paying and roughly how far from the exchange are you? If you're getting tops of 500KB/sec on ADSL2+, you might wanna look at the ADSL1 speeds (most ADSL2+-capable modem/routers are ADSL1 back-compat) and see if it's worth changing to the $69.95 20/1mbps 100GB/month ADSL1 (aka: ADSL1-Home 4).

http://www.westnet.com.au/broadband/plans.html <- I'd suggest punching in your landline number (including area code) to check what you can get and compare what's available. Westnet is technically iiNet, so you could technically keep to iiNet as the plans one has are basically the same as the other (hell, iiNet provides what's basically the ADSL1-Home 4 account at ADSL2+ speeds without the need to pay for landline, known as Naked Home-1 under Naked DSL on their site. something Westnet doesn't exactly offer, but that's not surprising).

Internet is fucking AWFUL in Australia. I'm lucky enough to get 500kb peak d/l speed at...like 2am for like one shining brief minute.

My download limit is also ridiculous.
Where the hell do you live? in queensland i'm lucky to get 80 kb/sec i had to leave my computer on for 2 days for TF2 to download. Its also running on the top brand netgear usb to router so i am running a good router.

Yeah, it's pretty shoddy at the moment.

On the other hand, the national broadband network has just gotten the go ahead, finally, in the face of alot of opposition of the "it won't be perfect, so we should do nothing instead" variety. Things are going to improve.
The filter thingy is set to slow it down vastly.

I'm with Optus. I used to live close to the exchange, and would hit speeds of 14 mbs. I then moved 3 suburbs away, and am still connected to the same exchange. I now get 300k per second. I'm pretty damned annoyed, but not much I can do, due to my distance from the exchange.

Get about 100kb/s... but it hits the cap about halfway through the month and drops to about 20.

I live in the center of Australia's biggest city. According to Telstra, my internet dropped out 90 times today. This is a completely accurate number.

I'm sure you don't need to ask what I think of Australia's internet.

I live about 30km from the nearest town, so I can't get access to any ADSL or cable internet. The best I can get is satellite, which downloads at about 500kb/s on a good day, 250 otherwise. The problem is that I only get about 4gig of downloads for $60/month, before betting shaped down to 10kb/s downloads. But at least I shouldn't get slowed by the filter, because my ISP (skymesh) isn't participating in the filter program.

But seriously, the filter and our entire nanny-government can fuck right off. Do they really think plain cigarette packaging will stop people buying it? what are we, 5-year-olds. And game censorship etc. rage rage rage.

THIS IS WHY WE NEED THE NBN!

*Waves a pathetic, yet incredibly expensive little flag*

Jokes, jokes... let's all waste 50 billion!

i have 120-250kb/s dl speel, only 12 gig limit... basically because we're too far from the exchange... despite living in a densely residential area... bah!

I'm in Aus and I average my downloads at about 400KBps, but my area isn't particularly busy. I would get way faster if my exchange was closer though.

That is going to be such a pain in the fucking arse. Having to double check every pack of cigs you buy because it'll be far too easy for the person selling them to accidentally grab the wrong pack.

Of course, when it comes to tobacco the government is firmly in favour of anything that looks like they're being proactive but will in no way interfer with their multi-billion dollar tobacco tax revenue stream.

Or if we have to have download limits... WHY ARE THEY SO UNREASONABLY SMALL?

Okay, not all of them are but you pay through the arse for the half decent ones.

You lot do seem to have it pretty poorly, hopefully yours is at least consistent though, mine can decide to be anything between 10kb/s to 2mb - depending on it's mood (usually it likes to settle in at about 100-200kb/s if it's in a good mood)
