They really should make this kind of thing illegal if it isn't already.

The government(And organizations like this) should have every right to block websites from user access.
So they should have the right to censor their opposition from speaking?
Of course.

If the government had the ability to stop criminals from communicating with each other, organized crime would be a thing of the past. And any other crime would be relatively manageable. So yeah, I don't see what is wrong with hindering organized crime.
I was talking about political opponents. The point is, no one should have the power to choose who can say what, as then the world has to conform to them, no other view points would be allowed to be expressed.
Your post is win. If I want to say that SUCKER PUNCH was the lamest let down of all then I'll say it proud.

On a serious note. Censorship on the Internet!? HA! You might as well try to beat Yahtzee in a nit picking competition XD Hehehehe all I could come up with on short notice.

Boy I bet it's lonely in your little world.
What gave you that impression?

I just wouldn't say anything bad about any of the governments. They have the military and all. So, as a result, I support anything they go for.

And we might as well get rid of piracy and pornography while we're at it. :p
A lot of angry men would like a word with you.
$5 says Yahtzee is one of them!

But it doesn't, it doesn't stop criminals doing anything, they can get round it easily, it only harms the normal people.

I'm against child pornagraphy but i feel this is wrong. The wrong way to solve the problem the wrong way to implement the solution and really easy way for these companies to go out of business.

This prevents people from getting there jollies off by watching this stuff. Okay so now they can't get it virtually, this means they're probably gonna go out and do it in reality. okay you've blocked the sites. no one can see them. Isn't this the same as turning a blind eye? or least looking the other way? these kids are still being abused and now law enforcement won't be able to see the videos and this isn't stopping P2P of such illicit materials. A company that cannot be forced to be transparent is doing this and therefore they can blacklist whoever they want including other ISPs. And if they don't blacklist other ISPs it's a bad business decision because all they're doing is giving themselves a bad rep and opening the door to any other ISP that offers non-filtered internet access to come in a take their customers.

Alright I read the first few posts and it was immediately aware of who didn't read the article. It's just blocking illegal websites anyway, it's like saying they have no right to take away all our child porn, it doesn't make sense. But if they censor 4Chan expect a shitstorm of hatred.

You know what, fuck this censorship thing. I'm not even Australian and this pisses me off. To any Aussies that are getting hit with this crap I have something for you:

The Tor Project [http://www.torproject.org/]

For those unfamiliar think of it as an uber-proxy, it takes a bit of TLC to get running quite right, and it's slower then regular internet, but it pretty well unblocks anything that you want once you've gotten it down.

For those that do know about Tor, well, I guess I needn't tell you about it.

No, they shouldn't. They don't even have a proper checks and balance system in place. The whole thing is full-retard, and yet another sign that the people in charge are too far behind the times.

cue the great firewall of china. what amazes me is that they do it voluntarily. have they gone completely mad? not only will they loose costumers but all their reputation too.

You wonder why they cant just make the filter that a parent can turn on if it wants to protect kids. Where as adults are free to search for what they want. Im all for stopping kids watching inappropriate things but they shouldnt ban everybody to do it.
because every program that tried to make such filter has completely failed so far.

Good luck on that. I think we already know how much damage angry computer nuts can do the internet when you get them angry. Aside from the whole freedom of speech being trampled here the other problem I have with this is that everyone just assumes a slippery slope here. If they block one site pretty soon there tyrannically block off whole portions of the internet and controversial site or those that oppose them and blah blah blah. That's a logical fallacy and people need to realize how dumb it is.

First they came for the child porn lovers
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a child porn lover.

Then they came for the furries,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a furry.

Then they came for the LulzBoat,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't on a boat.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

This certainly seems to be going down well with the average citizen. /sarcasm
We give them the power so they can take away our fun. That's how it is, that's how it shall always be; if we don't acknowledge the fact that the system is fundamentally flawed.

Governments and private organizations have two intertwined goals, make more money & gather more power. They don't give a rats arse about us. We all know this, but none of us do anything.

Anyway, when 'the internet hate machine' and the 'hackers on steroids' get their groove on to do something about this I recommend you guys jump on board. It might just start to get the ball rolling, you never know. And as always "the more the merrier".

Hey, child abuse site blocking isn't so ba... Oh my god! Team Four Star is blocked! They don't condone it, but they do find it hilarious...

Being serious though, it'll be interesting to see how this goes, as the article notes, with the precedent it sets. I may not be in Australia, but I will be keeping my eye on this. It's amazing what censorship in one country can stir in another.

Okay, what exactly are they trying to do here? And what do they mean by child abuse websites? Do they mean child porn? I got a better idea, why don't they track these sites down and nail the administrators and all others affiliated with these sites to the fucking wall. Besides, this kind of content is more likely to be distributed by the P2P networks, not through HTTP, which is what they will be blocking. These assholes are cleverer than that.
That's actually what the police here in Australia do. They nabbed some administrator dude on a post board earlier this week.

However, police doing their jobs doesn't win votes. Nor does it give you an infrastructure to censor the internet with. Although it does actually stop CP.
So I was right, it's all theatre. We got the same problem in Ontario. Some idiot gas station attendant got hit by a gas and dasher while trying to stop the ****. He died, so our Premier proposed a law requiring station to require customers to pre-pay for the gas. Meanwhile, that's not why this happened. It happened because the attendant was stupid enough to think someone who's stealing gas would stop his car if someone stands in front of it.

Mexican drug cartels have soldiers, should we just listen to them because we have a couple guns then?

Also, pornography is legal, what someone does with their own body is none of your business.

Edit: I know of course that the government has nothing to do with this filter.
Of course they should. They're powerful than we are. That's the way of things.
My brain is on fire and your comments are to blame. Now, do not look upon this comment as an assault against you or a provocation, I just can not grasp how a human being could say the things you do. Do you not want to consider your self a free man? You know, the kings had guns and armies too, did that stop people from overthrowing them?

How can you accept another mans rule just because they have guns? Would you let your family and friends be murdered in front of you with your only reaction being a shrug and the phrase: Well, they are stronger, guess they are right to do whatever they want.

Please, understand that I am not trying to offend you, it just boggles my mind to the extent it starts dribbling out of my ears!

Anyway, hang in there people of Australia... That's all I can say. If also we lose the court case on Monday this will really be a sad period for free speech... It really pisses me off what many governments of the planet get away with. Where is the vox populi? Why doesn't anyone speak up against this absurdity!?
