I agree, he shouldn't be hacking Government Files, US or UK or wherever else he decided to delve, but he should be tried in the UK.
The real reason that the Government is so pissed off about all of this is because a simple computer user, without any outside help, hacked into one of the (supposidly) most secure networks in the world, so they're just worried that there is a leak "on the inside".
Or more of a concern; The American Government's anti-hacker protection is SHIT.

You Europeans are retarded. He tampered with USA material and should have a trial on their terms. Hacking into government files is a serious offense.
I'll word this in the American fashion:
Now, I do agree that this incident is of great concern to the United States Government and all those concerned with the crime, but we should not have to extradite one of our own for a crime they committed on our soil.

*coughs*

In other words: you're calling us (Europeans, even though this was a matter in the UK), retarded for feeling the same way about something that the American public would feel about the crime if it happened on US soil.
If this was to happen the other way round (US user to hack in to the UK Network) and we wanted to extradite the person in question, you'd say that they should be charged in the country the crime was committed (in the example I'm using, the USA) and should not be prosecuted by the country (in this example, the UK) in which the crime will have the most effect.

The Americans should be happy he hacked it. Clearly shows there's problems with it if 1 man on his home pc can hack it and now they've fixed those problems. Better him than someone with actual bad intent isn't it? It's like saying if someone drove a car and didnt crash into anyone and gave £50 to charity its the same as stealing a car and running someone over on purpose. Completely different intents with completely different results. This man should be paid money considering people are paid to find holes in computer systems. Also some of the main technicians of the computers themselves have said that they did them a favour.

Anyone who is smart enough to hack into the US government's file systems is smart enough to know the consequences, I mean, by saying he was looking for UFO evidence PROVES that he MEANT to hack into the systems

You are only off the hook if you are mentally UNFIT to KNOW what you are doing.

EDIT: it is absolutely right to punish him in the US to the full extent of the law, or maybe you think we should start giving people IQ tests and raise their prison sentences for each additional point over 100, or lower them for each point under 100. Would that be fair?

"Hey, US Government? Here's my middle finger."

He committed a crime in Britain, as a British citizen, as such he should be tried in Britain, as a British citizen
If you kill a man while in Mexico, you don't get tried in Britain just because your a British citizen. He commited a crime in and against the US by using a computer as a proxy, even if he was physically located in the UK
