Anyone remember Terminator 2?

Yeah, this is probably going to be great if not awesome. I wonder what the second film can be about thought though.

Humans have left Pandora and Jake has become a Na'Vi. Maybe the humans comes back or maybe it'll be one another planet? I don't really care right now, I'm too excited.

I thought Avatar was brilliant. That said I don't really see the need for a sequel. In my mind there will only ever be one, it was a great standalone film that tied up all loose ends. I fail to see how we can make any kind of continuation from it. This is similar to my feelings on Bioshock 2, it was a great plot but why continue to make more of something that worked on its own terms when they can just make something completely different but equally good?
I mean I'm a big fan of trilogies and all but seriously, I know when a movie or game has the potential for a sequel and when I feel that a sequel is unneeded, and Avatar is in my own opinion a great piece of work that deserves to be a singular masterpiece.

That said James Cameron DID make Terminator 2, I suppose its possible that, given the same long period of time, he can make a good sequel.

Isn't it old news that there is another two planned films(Providing the first was a success) since they kinda spent a lot of money making the world they might aswell use it again.

Also pretty sure I read a quote somewhere with someone that was involved in the film saying you haven't seen what lies under Pandora yet. Don't bother asking for a link cus it was weeks ago and I can't be arsed to look for it.

I'm relentlessly optimistic about anything he does and I've enjoyed everything he has done.

And I thought Avatar was great and have no problem seeing more of it.

I'm a perfect fan.
same here

James Cameron made the perfect sequel (see: Terminator 2), so im pretty optimistic.

I don't really know what the sequel could be about. But I'm definitely gonna watch it if James Cameron directs.

No! No! No! Nooooooo!
You can't make a sequel out of Fernguly! Avatar was all about high tech graphics (and NOTHING more), you're telling me that that's enough to make a sequel? Why can't they take those graphics and do something good with them, like showing something different, like a high tech movie about dark ages, dragons and stuff. They could have remade other movies, like Star Wars. Just imagine what they could do with Star Wars. Every alien would be SGI, humans would be actors. Remake something that is worth remaking! The first one was about technology and nothing more, if you do it again, people will actually get used to it and look at the story, the characters. Avatar's story was ripped off, it was filled with cliches and i (personally) didn't like any of the characters(well, the bad guys were kind of funny, but too huge jerks).
I feel like I'm starting to repeat myself, so - just do something different with it, don't remake the graphical remake of something that has been done before.
p.s they are making it just because they already have the story, characters and they made the setting, less work for them (and they will cash on those people who loved Avatar)

Ocelot is indifferent. But maybe this time they can improve the story telling method.

Good, maybe we won't be so prideful and expect the humans to be good guys for the most part the next time. Too many made that mistake with the first film, and thus were bamboozled by it. Can't blame Cameron for that, though. He was expecting higher intelligence from his viewers. An elementary mistake, but even geniuses make that mistake on occasion. Just look at Hitchcock, who made thrillers that the masses were often too stupid to find scary (since there were all sorts of psychological subtexts and symbolic moments that the average punter wouldn't have a clue about).

I have to agree with Yahtzee when he says sequels should be banned, while we'd miss out on Half Life 2... etc. utterly pointless sequels (e.g. this) would never see the light of day.

"To which Cameron answered that the plan had always been to make a trilogy of films"
Of course it was Cameron, of course it was...[/sarcasm]
And if Avatar hadn't been like the word's highest profit, fasting earning film ever, would the plan have always been for a trilogy then?

The film has broken even. And made a hefty profit.

But yeah, I'm totally psyched about a sequel.

I just hope he doesn't do any resurrection crap with the characters he killed off in the first one. I thought it was really bold the way he killed off 2 Na'vi Chiefs, and Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver's characters. So few films have the balls to say "Here 6 main characters, only 2 make it to the end.

Awesome! Maybe they'll explain what the humans actually do with unobtainium! They could suck, like the matrix trilogy, or they could be a honking good time, like the back to the future movies. I'd like to see more of the dickcheese business man as a villain.

A derivative and old-fashioned but entertaining and visually masterful sci-fi movie is released to great fanfare, with plans for a trilogy.

If we are very, very lucky, we could get another Empire Strikes Back.

It was said ages ago that if Avatar did well then James would turn it into a triology. People are already creating lists on what they want in Avatar 2. [http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/105/1058223p1.html]

Yes, they're blue, thank you. I'd never have noticed that if people like you didn't make that comparison.

Anyway, this could go either way. It could be great, it could suck, and right now we don't know enough to tell which, so why bother with the doomsday predictions?

Well, we'll have to wait another 14-odd years until 2023 (counting from 2009) to find out :p
