I'm not sure if it was more because I was used the effect after a time or if there really was a difference, but I much preferred the 3D once the movie got rolling. In the first scenes it seemed more of a "We haz 3D!!1!" situation where things were so obviously layered together to promote the 3D appearance that instead of being a more realistic approximation of depth it ended up looking like things were just cut and pasted in stacks on top of eachother. Latter effects like the drifting seeds of the Tree, falling ashes or the grouped Navi looked much better to me. As I said though, that may simply be because my eyes and brain had simply adjusted to the "new" effect by that point.

was awesome... you felt like almost being there but... i have to agree not refined yet (was my first movie to watch in 3D btw) and imo i think its taking it to the extreme that they are making Tv's next year that can show films in 3D..

It was absolutely incredible in 3D, very immersive without being distracting or overwhelming. It turned the movie into a whole new experience for me. Took maybe 30 seconds for my eyes and brain to adjust, then after that it was seam-less and very natural.
The parts where things were falling or drifting in front of the screen, such as the seed-pods or ash, I kept wanting to reach out and touch it.

What did you think of the scene in which the tree finally fell? For me, that was the only time it appeared that the actors were standing in front of a green screen. It flashed me back to the Rancor battle in Return of The Jedi.Firelode said:
Thanks for all the replies, it seems the topic is centering around the 3D element of the film, I haven't seen Avatar in 2D yet but I hope to at the end of next week, then I'll add to the review what I thought of it.
I'm not sure I felt totally immersed in the film as much as some people appear to have felt it but I did enjoy the 3D in a a fair number of scenes and noticed throughout the film that it was present.

Having seen A Christmas Carol in 3D, I'd say that 3D is a waste of time and snacks. I saw Avatar, and it's not worth seeing in 3D, however, it is definately worth seeing.
The writers and special effects team worked their asses off for this film. The graphics were beautiful and the concept of Pandora was innovating. The story is slightly overused, but then again what isn't these days. However, this version of the story might actually get non-eco-friendly people to wake up and smell the industry. The acting from Zoe Saldana is Oscar-worthy, and I liked the wheelchair-guy, too. It's a great movie, worth-seeing, just try not to get naucious while watching the 3D version.
