'Avatar' ends 'Titanic's reign as highest grossing movie ever
By Olivia Smith
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

It's official: "Avatar" has sunk "Titanic" as the all-time box-office champ.

The tale of conflict between an indigenous tribe of 9-foot-tall blue people and the humans who want their planet's resources became the highest grossing movie ever over the weekend, thanks to six weeks of booming box-office receipts internationally, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

As of Sunday, "Avatar" had raked in $1.292 billion worldwide, beating by $50.1 million the previous record held by "Titanic." Both movies were directed by James Cameron.

His earlier epic tale of love aboard the most famous sinking ship of all time had held the record for 13 years, having taken in $1.242 billion at the box office when it ? as Leonardo DiCaprio's character so memorably says in the movie ? was "king of the world."

"Avatar" still has a ways to go before it overtakes "Titanic" in the U.S. As it stands, it has taken in $551.7 million, still $49 million short of "Titanic's" $600.8 million.

The record-breaking weekend was the sixth in a row that "Avatar" had grossed at least $100 million internationally, the Hollywood Reporter noted.

China and Russia, countries that were not significant in "Titanic's" box-office dominance, were big contributors to "Avatar's" success.

Even without factoring in inflation, "Avatar" and "Titanic" aren't competing on an even playing field in terms of monetary intake. Because "Avatar" was shot and is being shown widely in 3D, theaters are charging at least several dollars more per ticket than they would for a conventional film, to say nothing of the change in ticket prices in the 13 years since "Titanic" was released, in 1997.

At least 65% of "Avatar's" earnings abroad come from 3D theaters. For the U.S., that number is 80%, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

When adjusted for inflation, "Titanic" would still come out on top, with its gross worth at least $2.5 billion in today's numbers.

By that measure, though, both of Cameron's films would fall to yet another sweeping romance with political and social dimensions: "Gone With the Wind," which in 1939 grossed $400 million. That would be equal to at least $6 billion today.
All I have to say is wow...people are obsessed with that freakin' movie. I lost interest when everyone said the basic story was the same as Dances with Wolves - total snorefest for me. And yet people are devoting communities all around that movie. It is managing to do in short time what Star Wars and Star Trek have built up over many years. How can one become so enamored with something they knew nothing about such a short time ago? Hmmph, even though it has grossed more than the original Star Wars movie I still say it's not even close in my book (I know enough from people who went and told me all about it, not interested in watching it). People saw Star Wars and it was epic, so epic people went back and watched it over and over. But people didn't walk out like "OMGZORZ IMMA GO HOME AND MAKE A STORMTROOPER COSTUME!11!". I'm scared to see the next ComicCon photos because someone is going to dress up like one of those blue things from this movie (No I don't know or care what they're called).

So, everyone else's take on this?

Can't say I didn't expect this, but avatar is not a good enough movie in my mind to do this well. Sure it was fun while it lasted, but it wasn't memorable or very original.

I don't understand the obsession with it - it's only unique draw is the visual aspect of the film.... I don't understand why people would be so freaking interested in that.

I am not surprised by this. It definetly did have the potential to be the best movie of all time, but it fell a bit short. The story wasn't original, but it was very well told. The acting is great and the graphics are nothing short of mind blowing, especially in 3d. I didn't think I would like it, but I did. Which is exactly what I would expect, since james cameron has been thinking about this movie for 12 yers. Not the gretest movie of all time, but definetly worth seeing.

Theres nothing wrong with avatar, alot of movies arent original, and they dont have to be as long as the story is told well, which avatar does, this is just another case of hating cus its popular just like with Modern Warfare 2

Proof that nobody knows the old marketing axiom "know your audience and give 'em what they want" like James Cameron.

And perhaps before commenting on something, you should actually watch the fucking thing. I'm not going to blow sunshine up your arse and tell you it's the best film of all time, it isn't imo, but its probably worth seeing at least once in a cinema. But that's your call.
OP... listen to this man, he speaks the truth. Judging a movie before watching it makes you look all manners of retarded.

All the great sculptures and paintings are just still pictures and yet the most intelligent of people find them interesting so why shouldn't people be interested in avatar? Avatar is like the mona lisa of our time.

Just like Titanic, I didn't think Avatar was anything special. I don't understand how Cameron can make so much money with... Fairly average movies, but a big budget.

I'm still really annoyed at that chick from Titanic letting DiCaprio drown instead of just letting him on her piece of wood. What a meanie.
