I don't understand the obsession with it - it's only unique draw is the visual aspect of the film.... I don't understand why people would be so freaking interested in that.
All the great sculptures and paintings are just still pictures and yet the most intelligent of people find them interesting so why shouldn't people be interested in avatar? Avatar is like the mona lisa of our time.
Because those pictures and sculptures often have very complex and thematic meaning behind them. Avatar is NOTHING BUT a bunch of pretty looking images - the message they convey is contrived, overdone, and consequently uninteresting and unworthy of any significant attention.

Edit: THE MONA LISA OF OUR TIME????? FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.....

I mean.... I disagree. STRONGLY.

I saw it and it kept me entertained for the bulk of the movie despite the weak plot. But still, meh. It was like Fern Gully, the Smurfs and Dances With Wolves had a bastard child in space. But good for Jimmy Cameron, I hope he has fun with his obscene amount of blue space-cat money. Also I hope in the sequel humans come back and nuke Pandora from orbit and strip mine Unobtanium until there's nothing left but ash. USA! USA!

As do I. And i agree there is nothing outstanding about avatar in story or acting or even character development but it has the highest budget out of any other movie and that compels people to give money to James Cameron.

I remember moviegoers seeing Titanic multiple times, some even said over ten. I've never been so fanatical over a movie, but I admit, I see more a draw with Titanic than Avatar. I felt better connected and believed in the characters of Titanic. The cast of Avatar are the stuff of Saturday morning cartoons, and I don't mean in the animated sense.

Yes, for some completely bizarre and unknowable reason that makes my brain hurt when I even try to comprehend it; I mean, Titanic had some redeeming qualities - some really solid acting, an emotionally moving and compelling story, Kate Winslett naked..... Avatar has NONE of these. I just don't get it, and I don't want to, frankly.

I am starting to get the horrible feeling that it sucks people in and gets them hooked like Substance D (some kind of internet knick knack for any one who gets the reference). All of my friends who have seen it, have spent a fortune on cinema tickets watching it and all of my friends are poor students that makes that even more worrying. They're like junkies who need their next fix of Avatar. I mean, I haven't seen it and I want to but I'm afraid that I might be come some kind of Avatar whore like my friends and then spend the rest of my days trying to get my next fix; wasting all of my money before ending up in a cardboard box, just watching the movie trailer for a fix and eventually being found dead in a slum surrounded by Avatar posters and Ubisoft games.
