Thank you.Dr. wonderful said:Yeah! hat was cool!
I think he's different from any other Avatar character. Couldn't tell you for sure, though. I do like the concept in any case -- little kid just trying to help his family makes a breakthrough on some ridiculously difficult aspect of bending (especially if that's pushed earlier in the story, IMO).ruedyn said:I'm in another RP, but I love Avatar and would kick myself quite a bit if I didn't at least try to get into this. Name: Senji Nakimoto
Age&Gender: 23, Male
Concept: Fire Bender, somewhat known for his fire breath (He can only make it go about 10 ft, and in a very concentrated stream but when he is very angry, it tends to be bit more spread out), otherwise entirely average
Appearance: 5'10, lanky build, medium length messy black hair and brown eyes. Dark red robes with samurai armor over it. Has a scar over his nose and a dragon tattoo on his left arm.
Personality: Brash and short tempered, but is very loyal to friends and a Fire Nation patriot. Dislikes criminals.
Equipment: His armor, has a sun hat but usually wears it on his back.
Bio: Born the son of a common foot soldier in the Fire Nation military and a tea shop owner, his family was rather poor. This was not helped when his father died when Senji was 7. Upon hearing the news, he trained himself how to fight and tried to become the man of the family. He learned his fire breath through history books and trial and error. One day, when some bandits came and tried to make his mother pay them money, among other things, Senji stepped up. The bandits ended up killing his mom and accepting the challenge. Although he was able to take out several, he ended up burning the shop down. He ended up joining the military some time afterwards, and found himself in his dads old squad. He has generally enjoyed the experience but finds his tour is almost up.
EDIT: Crap, might've made Zuko. Doing it again -_-
EDIT 2: Okay, don't think he's aping anyone now... hopefully.
I'd hate to see how big this post would be without a spoiler tag on the forum.Arcanist said:This looks interesting, so here's my submission. Any feedback would be appreciated!
EDIT: Oops, forgot to spoiler.
I do like the more 'superhero' feel you've given it, but is there any reason in particular why you chose his nickname to mention a bird?Name: Shao Gaijin, the Nightbird of Ba Sing Se
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Appearance: 6' and of a lean build. Black hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. Wears an odd assortment of rags often associated with the city's gangs and criminal element, but not a cohesive set - that is, not the full attire of one gang, but pieces of each.
Personality: He carries himself with a sort of dignity not associated with his lowly birth. Has a very solid sense of justice and utterly despises people that exploit others for their own personal gain. He feels that his powers where bestowed upon him by fate to help the poor of Ba Sing Se by stopping the crime endemic to their lives.
Skills/Bending: A self-taught earthbender, Shao's techniques are the epitomy of practicality - while not graceful and highly unrefined, they are efficent and brutal - particularly against non-benders. He avoids fights with other benders, as he knows his lack of training is a serious handicap. Known throughout the city as an untapped talent, though he seems hesitant to take on a master.
Weapons/equipment: Carries a staff on him at all times. He uses it as an implement in his bending techniques, as a focus in creating shockwaves, as a bat to guide projectiles, and as a standard weapon, among other uses.
Back story: Being born poor in the slums of Ba Sing Se, Shao seemed destined for a life of destitution. His mother, a maid to a local crimelord, was seduced by a travelling entertainer, and left the city for good before Shao was born. Being raised alone by his mother was hard, and the day he turned seven, he was doing odd jobs around the city to support his family.
One day, however, the crimelord his mother worked for, a pudgy man by the name of Jio, crossed one to many of his rivals. They pooled money together and hired a group of mercenaries to take him down. In the resulting raid, Shao's mother was killed and Jio escaped unharmed. When they came for him, the mercenaries intended to take the boy, now only 13 years old, alive to sell as a slave. In a panic, Shao grabbed the nearest weapon he could - a simple quarterstaff - and brandished it in an effort to defend himself. The mercenaries laughed off this pitiful boy's attempt at self-defense and moved in to capture him.
In his desperation, Shao slammed his staff into the ground - and found that it trembled with enough force to throw the mercenaries to their feet! The men, taken aback, retreated, not wanting to incur the wrath of a powerful bender. Shao ran from the scene for his life and went into hiding.
He later discovered the circumstances behind the raid that killed his mother, and swore that he would take down the gangs running Ba Sing Se's slums to prevent such a tragedy from ever occuring again. To that end, he taught himself whatever earthbending he could, often with scrolls he stole from local bookstores. With this newfound knowledge and the staff he fled with all those years ago, Shao emerged at the age of 21 to take his revenge on the gangs that killed his mother. His heroics quickly garnered him a reputation as a hero of the downtrodden, and his black hair and proclivity to only work at night garnered him the nickname the Nightbird of Ba Sing Se.
Today, he continues his one-man crusade against Ba Sing Se's criminal element. Word has it, though, that he might be looking for help...
Ah, that's more backstory I haven't added yet, as I felt it wasn't too relevant. The gangs he fights don't like him very much(obviously) and so have taken to trying to smear his name in the community. One of the first insults they came up with was that he was a coward because he favored hit-and-run tactics in his early days, calling him 'as flighty as a baby sparrow.'VuvuZelaMan said:I do like the more 'superhero' feel you've given it, but is there any reason in particular why you chose his nickname to mention a bird?

People didn't quite buy it, but they did seize on the bird motif in a more positive way, hence the nickname.
That bio is a work of Art.Apollo45 said:Name: Tan Daofu
Gender & Age: Male, 26
Concept: Nomad Energybender from the Southern Air Temple.
The Energybending is essentially an excuse for him to not be a bender yet be born to Air Nomads. He can't Airbend, but since all of the Air Nomads have the ability to bend his came in the form of Energybending. He doesn't know it, no one else knows it, and he has no way to train it even if he were to ever find out. It manifests itself in an ability to read people better than normal, but nothing particularly special otherwise. I don't plan on developing it in to anything special unless, somehow, the storyline directs the path specifically in that direction.
Appearance: Unlike other members of his family - all of who are Air Benders - Tan wears his red hair long, falling below his shoulders in the back and easily covering his eyes down to his nose in the front. He has a long, angular face with a strong chin and a Greek nose that's slightly larger than would be ideal. His face is rounded out with a pair of bright blue eyes.
Like most of his Airbender family, Tan's standard build is rather skinny, but his inability to bend has meant he's needed to compensate in other ways. Because of this he's ended up quite a bit bulkier than a typical Air Nomad, allowing him to get around in the very vertically constructed air temples in a halfway proficient fashion, by climbing and leaping from ledge to ledge where normally one would be expected to fly. He stands at 6' 2" tall and weighs in at around 180-190 lbs.
Being different from the other Nomads has influenced his fashion style as well as his physical abilities. Tan tends to take elements from multiple nations and combine them in to a single outfit, stealing selected armor pieces from the Fire Nation, long tunics from the Earth Kingdom, cloaks from the Air Nomads, and even some of the lighter clothing and waterproof boots from the Water Tribes. He's adjusted the coloring from each to fit better, and has ended up with a palette of whites, grays, and a bit of red here and there. He wears a light orange sash around his waist as a belt in deference to his Air Nomad family.
Personality: Tan is an odd mix of seriousness and sarcasm, with more than a hint of womanizing in him to round it all off. He has a tendency to be serious to the point of being cold when he needs to be, or when he's feeling uncomfortable or out of his element in any way. This is often punctuated by a well-placed sarcastic remark or subtle joke, however, revealing a lighter side to him that only pushes its way out completely when he's relaxed or in a situation that he's confident he can come out on top of, be that a fight, gambling, a game, or anything else.
His time in the Air Temples, despite not being an Airbender, has managed to help enforce his personality. He's often able to joke at his own expense when the time requires it, rarely backs down from a challenge, and can be a bit cocky at times (which helped him keep up mentally with his peers' ever increasing abilities to bend). He's become quite adept at figuring out alternate solutions to things and thinking outside the box. Although he's by no means an inventor type, this has helped him intuitively solve problems that others have struggled long and hard to even grasp, which has transferred in to his choices of equipment.
The first time he encounters someone he may seem distant, but he quickly is able to 'figure out' a person at a basic level and quickly warms up to just about anyone. This natural ability to read people has helped him out more times than he can count in more ways than one. He's very much a people person, and has been known to use that ability to flirt unashamedly with women of all sorts.
His feelings about pacifism don't quite match up with his Air Nomad brethren. He's all for staying out of fights if possible, but if he needs to he has no aversions towards beating the crap out of someone. Still, the Air Nomad teachings have rubbed off on him a bit, and he tends to wriggle his way out of conflicts with his words if he can. If not, well, he's knocked plenty of heads together in his time.
Equipment: Tan doesn't typically carry around weapons other than a couple of knives that are more used for utility than combat and a staff that he uses as a walking stick. He carries a length of rope and a set of metal brawling gloves that he tends to wear on a regular basis both for looks and for their ability to lend an extra hand in any sort of fights he might find himself in. He's proficient in most stave-weapon combat, including various kinds of spears and polearms, a skill he adapted from the Airbender training he recieved.
Fighting Style: A variation of the typical Airbender fighting style, unprofessionally adapted to be more aggressive and in-your-face as well as more useful in combat without the help of Bending. He uses the spinning, fluid motions to chain attacks together while dodging and redirecting attacks coming his way.
Bio: Tan was born to a pair of strong Airbenders, his mother from the Western Air Temple and father from the Southern. He was raised, along with the rest of the Airbending males, travelling between the Southern and Northern Temples, but unlike the rest of his peers it was quickly discovered that he couldn't airbend. This was a unique phenomenon among the Air Nomads, and the monks weren't quite sure how to handle the situation. It sent the Council of the Southern Temple in to a bit of a frenzy for a couple days as they debated how to handle his unique disability. Tan was the first Air Nomad to be born without bending abilities in recent history. It was eventually decided that the situation would be mostly ignored, except for when the situation required addressing. Tan would attend all the same classes, trainings, and meditations that his peers would. He would be expected to master the techniques that he could, specifically those surrounding the mental and physical state of his body, and the Airbending techniques would be practiced without the benefit of the bending.
Of course, being a young kid at the time, this didn't sit too well with Tan. He felt alternatively left out and unnecessarily included in things that he couldn't do. The young boy quickly took to avoiding classes, instead taking his time to learn how to get around the largely vertically build Air Temples. During his "free time" he learned he had a natural affinity for climbing. Once he figured it out it was nearly impossible to keep him off the walls of the buildings. It was his way to compensate for not being able to bend, and therefore fly, like his peers. He would climb to the top of the temples and sit, watching the sky bison and winged lemurs soar. He never developed an attachment to any of the sky bison, likely because of his lack of airbending, but he did slowly become friends with one of the Lemurs after consistently feeding it as he brought his meals to the top of the temple. Within a few months the lemur began to follow him around the temple, and from then on it ended up being a near constant companion during his more delinquent periods.
Tan managed to get through the training, excelling in some areas and failing in others. He was never one for meditation, nor was he the kind who would sit around watching the others Bend. He took to the martial arts portions well, however, and ended up being one of the more proficient non-bending fighters in the temples. By the time he reached sixteen he was starting to become more accepted in the Temple, but despite what everyone said it was blatantly obvious to him that they weren't going to accept him as one of their own in the same way they did his peers. It wasn't anything blatant, but the oddity of his situation was just enough to make him an outsider. So, not long after his sixteenth birthday he snuck out in the middle of the night, climbing down the outside walls of the temple, and ran off along with his Lemur friend (who he never quite gave a name, simply calling him "Lemur" or "boy").
The next few months consisted of floating from island to island on a stolen Air Nomad boat - one of the very few that existed - essentially wandering. He moved consistently towards the Earth Kingdom. At one point he landed on Kyoshi Island, where he discovered that he was, in fact, quite good with words. It took him a bit, but he was able to feel out the nature of the people on the island - specifically the Kyoshi Warriors - and become friends with them (with some help from the Lemur). After a year of spending time on the island, living with other non-benders for the first time in his life, he managed to convince the warriors to give him a bit of training. It wasn't much, but he learned enough about swordsmanship to hold his own, but more specifically learned the basics of combat with the metal fans that the women used. It wasn't formal training by any means, and was more prompted by a semi-relationship he had developed with one of the Warriors, but it was enough to teach him how to adjust his Airbending fighting style to more suit his personality.
After two years on the island he moved on again - this time prompted by a breakup with a different Warrior - and continued his journeys through the Earth Kingdoms. Tan continued to develop his own styles of life different from those he had known at both the Air Temples and on the island as he travelled. He would stay for a while at a town, then move on again, never fully settling but never becoming strictly a wanderer. Tan found he was able to read people better as time went on. He managed to use that to his advantage, winning some money gambling, and generally making a good life for himself.
Now, ten years after he left the Air Temple, he's found himself in Ba Sing Se, a pack over his shoulder, staff in his hand, and Lemur walking next to him.
Note that this is my first time attempting a RP on these forums. I've been RPing in various places for about ten years now, but it's been a while since I've done so on a forum not specifically dedicated to a single RP, so it might take me a bit to adjust.

I'll take everything but the assassin bit, a bit toned down maybe? Maybe not a travelling circus of Acrobatic Assassins(if solely for the fact that anyone with half a brain is going to start connecting the dots if they heard of this travelling circus and the murders in a, more or less, peaceful and prosperous world, and deny them entrance at least on the basis of superstition, or going so far as conducting their own investigation into the weirdness)Dr. wonderful said:snip

I'm slightly uncomfortable accepting this sheet, because of the Energybending, and although you intend to not develop it beyond a better understanding of people unless "plot device needed" is reached, there's still the chance that you might reach for it at some point if you forget, or get desperate...or something. Another thing is that your bending thing doesn't exactly follow what we do know about it, passing on knowledge, close/open bending gate, etc.. Something I can suggest, to make the Energybending and the like a more interesting thing is to make it simply augment your natural abilities, and he is just a very empathetic person. I'll allow it regardless, except for one more thing, I'm saying that 6 feet is the tallest any of the PC or most NPC's will be. This is just to try to encourage some variety in heights around here(a bunch of 6'5" 200 lb. manly men gets boring after a few rp's, and besides this is Avatar-world and time period, 5'10" is considered being huge, 6 foot is almost unheard of at this point in time.) Love the Lemur though, one of the best things of the Avatar-verse is the wide array of animals and companions/pets/etc.Apollo45 said:snip

Na, he's good to leave. He's done tons of good(people aren't afraid to walk the streets at night, for example) and local gangs are really starting to make him their number one priority, so even he's starting to feel the heat. If he feels he can do more good elsewhere, he'll leave, though he'd probably drift back at some point.Redryhno said:Good, but you do know that the whole plot won't be taking place in Ba Sing Se, right? Compromise?:
You can keep the travelling circus, I find that fine and all, nothing to pick a bone with there, but maybe....this is harder than I thought for some reason...it's a circus of smuggling and under the table dealings, everything up to, but not including, assassination/murder, until someone(?)that came to the circus wandered into the wrong place and Hao was presented with a choice between killing an innocent and running off with said innocent? Just an idea to get your idea bank working if it needed it or not. Otherwise I find it fine and dandy. And it's always nice to see someone with weapons other than swords for once.
You got it. I'll adjust the height to something more within the time period. The reason I went 6' 2" was because the extra bit would help him with climbing, but that's not a big issue. And I totally agree on the manly men part.Redryhno said:I'm slightly uncomfortable accepting this sheet, because of the Energybending, and although you intend to not develop it beyond a better understanding of people unless "plot device needed" is reached, there's still the chance that you might reach for it at some point if you forget, or get desperate...or something.
