I was watching the legend of Kora, and I started wondering why the hell couldn't it be Avatar: the Legend of Kora, then I remember reading something about the James C. Film being a reason, and this had me wondering why the hell would that matter

Avatar: the last airbender (Cartoon) came out first, then it was the JC movie, then the Shamalon Film, then this new cartoon, My limited understanding of law says that there shouldn't be a problem,

So does anyone know why the show isn't called Avatar Legend of Kora?

For better or for worse, in the public's mind the word is more closely associated with the blue cat-people movie than the excellent cartoon. Putting "avatar" in the title would only draw the sort of "WTF where r the Navi this has nothing 2 do w/ avatar at all" stupidity.

But Scythian, that makes me scratch my head even more, How could Cameron even name it avatar with out issues? then they turn around and tell nick ((Who had the name first )) they can't use it on their sequel?

Because Nickelodeon doesn't have Titanic, Aliens, or Terminator 2 money. :p

I think JC didn't 'tell' them to do anything, Nick just decided to pick its battles.

But, they do have "We did it first". You can't sue someone for copyright infringement when they actually did it before you. ...Right? Oh... *grumble* Stupid Bethesda...

Far as I know they consciously chose not to name it Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and they weren't forced into it (or that they couldn't). I think they just did it to prevent any confusion between the two videos.

I've got to admit, it'd be pretty awesome to see blue cat-like people fighting against armies who can control the elements themselves. It'd probably be more of a Na'vi slaughter, but who knows.

I'm confused - there is only one Avatar. Isn't the thread about who's a more awesome avatar - Aang or Korra? What are these "blue cat-people" you're talking about? You people don't make sense.

I'm voting Aang but, then again, I still haven't seen the new series.

Well, OP wanted to know why the new series couldn't be called "Avatar:Legend of Korra."

Basically, it's because of James Cameron's sci-fi movie "Avatar"

Which contains blue cat-like people

Think of them as.... Space hippies. Without the drugs.

I don't think such a movie exists. Why are you lying to me and trying to trick me with photoshopped images? It is clear that nobody in their right mind will call a movie "Avatar" when it's not about Aang.

Also, if the movie existed at all it would have probably sucked.

Oh... um... yeah I'm dissapointed. I thought our avatars were going to have a fight to the death or something. ANYWAYS I think that the shows creators don't even want to think of a lawsuit with James Cammeron.

I still call it Avatar: The Legend of Korra anyways. Seriously, I think it's pretty stupid, but if it gets them out of legal trouble, I can deal with it. As long as we don't have to start pronouncing things differently like they did in that godawful M. Night movie. Was about to call a death warrant on M. Night after I saw that movie.

The new series is pretty good I think. This coming from someone who's favorite cartoon of all time was Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's pretty much everything I've hoped it would be at the moment. The opening and beginning of the first episode felt like warm welcome homes to all the old fans. I really like it when shows and movies do that kinda stuff.

Ah, you misunderstand - I am not cautious of the new series. I do not need persuasion. I just don't like waiting for a week between episodes. I'll probably wait for the first season to end, at least.

Well, one of these days, I might watch an episode or two to get an idea of what it's about but I'd rather wait.

James Cameron got to have the name Avatar because he wrote the movie ten years ago but no one would let him make it because of the high production budget. Now Nick just doesn't want to have any legal battles, so they decided to change it to The Legand of Korra.

They still refer to Korra as "The Avatar". So not a huge deal that it's not in the title.

The new show looks interesting, I do hope the villains get more interesting than the anti-bending separatists. And I do hope the 100 years war still carries some cultural influence. Racism and nationalism wouldn't be absent in a world like that.

I came, expecting a comparison of user pictures. I left feeling confused, but yet glad that there was more to this discussion that such trivia.
OT: Eh, Avatar. It's still something new, its doubters are probably glad Avatar's name isn't attached to it.
