What did you think of the movie Avatar? The one by James Cameron.

I'm watching it now, and I'm enjoying it. It's all been done before, but it's still well made, and entertaining, in my opinion.

<url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.256613-2-50-Reviews-Avatar-2009>This is what I thought of it.

Granted, I haven't seen it in many months now, but I really enjoyed it.

I think it gets way too much flack. Honestly, I didn't enjoy it, but as a whole, let's compare it to other movies. Is it better than the commercial kid's stuff or Twilight or Transformers? Of course! It's poor quality comes from its originality, but it at no point becomes horrendously bad. Except for robot knife.

The one thing that does annoy me is the backwards thinking process that this is going to move 3D and special effects in film, but even that's very debatable.

I found it horrendously boring to be quite honest. It got far too much praise for what it was. Is it better than most movies that were coming out at that time? Probably yes. Was it well made? Definitely. Was I entertained by it? Not in the slightest.

I didn't really like it. For one, that they portrayed humans as the bad guys. For two, that I didn't connect with the main characters and I thought the villian (the colonel?) was the most interesting of them all. For three, romance isn't really my favorite genre.

I think it is overrated, bland, dislike 3D, characters where meh, and the same story was better in Dances with Wolves or the kids animated movie Ferngully.

Outside of showing how you actually do 3D, Id idnt care for it. Cameron (for reasons that to everyone else seem (read are) to think are petty but to me seem completely justified) has left a bad taste in my mouth after Titanic and it transfers to his films.

why no, I didnt enjoy Titanic. In fact I didnt enjoy it so much it made me dislike Cameron, completely be uninterested and condescending of Dicaprio, and become the object of ire and hate for all the people that did enjoy it, decaprio, or cameron.

...

Of course thats not to say the movie was bad, I just didnt like it.

I thought it lost a lot in its transition to 2D. In the theater in 3D, you really felt immersed in the world, and therefore cared when the inevitable happened at the end - not to give too much away in case you haven't made it that far yet. : ) But in 2D, even BluRay hidef, it just seemed kind of flat. Also, Michelle Rodriguez is best enjoyed in 3D.

I'm not a fan of plagiarism.

I barely made it half way through Avatar...

Well, that's a valid reason not to like it. I feel the same about Lord of the Rings. Just bored.

My sentiments exactly, sure its not very original, but it does what it sets out to do and that is look brilliant. I'm sorry that you missed out on the cinematic experience, it's on of the few films to have done 3D right.
No, no. I watched in theatres before, I'm rewatching it with my friend now. I did enjoy the 3D, and I agree, it's one of very few films to have really good 3D. Entertaining, but only because it's well made.

Not just that, they ripped off the Strugatsky Brothers as well, not even credited. The brothers had a book about a planet called Pandora, and pretty much the entire plot of the movie was identical.

Yeah, I usually dislike 3D, but the 3D wasn't as annoying here as in most other movies, at least not for me.

I really liked AVATAR ! Yeah, i know that the story is weak and the characters aren't that interesting and all but the setting itself was enough to get me hooked. I love movies that dare to create another world. It was really fun to watch and i will watch it many more times BUT i really really hope that Cameron will put more effort into the story for the second one. I mean, a serie where the first movie has a weak story but the 2nd and 3rd one have more emphasis on story i can accept that but if the 2nd one still has a weak story it will be a big disapointment.

Really liked it the first time. Then I saw it again and realized how...unoriginal it was.

The other Avatar is waaaay better. The cartoon one, I mean.

<----Also, that one.

I totally agree. In almost every way. While most of the characters were mostly all boring, the only character I found interesting was the scientist. But only a bit. I'm watching the movie now, and I still have no idea what anyones name is besides the main character. (Only half paying attention)

The acting is quite good though, I have to say.

I think it's too long for a movie that's so predictable. The effects are amazing though. The story, not so much.

It was an incredibly boring and predictable script that was competently shot with a visually interesting world as it's setting. If all you're looking for is eye candy then you can do worse, but if you go in expecting anymore than that then you will be sorely disappointed.

Absolutely gorgeous visuals and 3D, sweet world-building, okay characters and script, unoriginal premise and way too preachy. Which seems to be the general consensus around here.
