I am a bass player and i love my bass. There are also other instruments i enjoy verry much such as the double bass, the cello, violin, saxaphone and moog synthesiser.

But then there are just those instruments that completely amaze and fascinate us. They are strange but awsome. One of these is the Theramin, unique in that you do not touch it to play (unless you want to mute it of course).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adtW7nZHmkg&feature=related - FFX's To Zanarkand on the Theramin, i am not an FF fanboy (much) just it was the best sounding song i could find on youtube, better than bad covers of gnarles barkley and video killed the radio star.

There are other strange instruments i love such as Christian Marclay's Turn-table guitar and Justice Yeldhams electrofied peice of glass which is played by slowing, scratching and biting.

What are some of your favourite instruments of the exotic variety?

The Erhu is definitely one of my favorites with a very melancholy and expressive sound range.

And the harp guitar just because it's basically an instrument that screams "How many strings can you handle at once?" Truly the Ninja Gaiden of instruments.

Personally, I'm quite fond of the look of the Callioflute-Hydraulophone (Crazy looking, I know. But I bet it's fun to play

I love the theremin. Such beautiful and emotive instrument. It's supposed to be incredibly hard to play though (since you don't have any actual keys to press or anything, you're just going to have to remember where in the air you're supposed to hold your hand to hit a certain note).

I love this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6lImGpk0wE
And I do disagree with you about the Gnarles Barkley video, I think it's very worth watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW0B1sipLBI&feature=related

I've been meaning to learn how to play these things:

Keytar
Mandolin
That gigantic French Horn thing in marching bands
That thing that makes the alien-y "WOOOOOOOHOOOOIOOO" sounds

I would have also have said Violin, but I may not have the integrity.

This weird contraption was being played on our City high street a few weeks ago:

I love the sound of the theremin as well.

And the harp is lovely. I once saw a busker in the London Underground playing a full size harp. You normally expect to see someone with a guitar, but this girl had somehow got a harp down there. Just amazing.

Sousaphone?

As for me, I enjoy the harp. If that's not exotic enough, these two guys played some music with one guy playing on water-filled crystal glasses, the other playing the spoons. Yep, that's right, he played percussion on two household spoons.

That IS the theramin. I think on the video killed the radio star video he talks a bit bout the instrument and does that sound.
