I never liked the first few episodes of Dexter and I still didn't know how I managed to watch the first season of Breaking Bad.

At least in the present-day the plot was always moving.
Moving nowhere i particular, and not to a solid outcome, or with characters most people could bring themselves to care about.

At that point, it's more the illusion of movement.

Xenogears. Late '90s and I was really into JRPGs and coming just off the FF7 hype wagon Xenogears was the next big thing. Pretty hard(not to mention expensive) it was for me to obtain an import copy of the game so rushed home to play it. I liked it but the overall presentation and lesser production values compared to FF7 left me a bit disappointed which only grew worse as I tried to piece together the nonsensical plot.

However this changed when my understanding of the plot deepened(primarily thanks to Perfect Works) and the game for some unknown reason really started to 'click' with me. Loved the game ever since and remains one of Squaresoft's best before that awful Enix merger.

Game of Thrones

I found the fist episode in particular to be rather dull. As I watched a few more I kept wondering why they ignored the opening to the first episode. I would have normally stopped watching the show if not for the crazy hype it generates online and with some of my friends/family. I'm glad I stuck with the show because it really becomes something good if not great at times. It's worth watching and I'm invested in what happens next with a few key characters.

The barrier to entry for the series is the amount of characters and storylines going on at once. Until you get invested in the series it's really quite boring. The show counts on you getting attached to at least one or two characters and watching it for them. From there you might get interested in other characters and enjoy the show as a whole.

Rewatching Game of Thrones Seasons 1-3 was actually a much better experience than my original viewing (I've not seen anything beyond season 3). I still feel the show is way over hyped in terms of how good it is...but it's a show worthy of your time just the same.

Kingdom Hearts II.

Fuckin' 3 hour tutorial playing as a guy you have no reason to give a shit about. Not to mention that if you skipped Chain of Memories then approximately nothing about what's going on story-wise is going to make sense for a good while. I do like the rest of the game for the most part however.

While we're on II's, the premiere episode of Sword Art Online II was pretty shit as well. There were some cool parts but it was mostly just crap-tons of unnecessary dialogue. Maybe it's just me, but I felt the first season's premiere did a way better job establishing what was going on concisely and in a way that made you excited about what was to come.

Though I must admit I am having fun picturing all those excited fans gathered at Aniplex 2014 for the premiere screening event with the series creator, and they're all pumped and going nuts with anticipation, and then they watch the episode and realize that half of it is just Kirito having brunch with some asshole we don't care about.

Berserk. The first story arc is nowhere near as well drawn as the rest of the series, the main character comes off as the epitome of juvenile "ultimate grimdark super badass" power fantasies, the darkness and the gore go so far over the top it switches between funny and insulting, and the pacing isn't really very good. Good thing the rest of the series is sublime then.

I guess you could count the Spartacus series for the same reasons as well, but when I watched the first episode I knew what I was in for, so it didn't really leave a bad taste in my mouth. It was so bonkers and over the top it was actually funny, and I pretty much laughed through the whole first episode.

Fate/Zero. I even made a thread about whether or not it was going to get any better after 4 episodes. I never made it past episode 6. I had no idea what was supposed to be going on, what the setting was like, what the rules of the world were, or most of the time even what the characters were talking about. It felt like I was watching some weird anime Diablo fan fiction.

The anime Garasaki. All I know that one of the Gundam people was behding the mech design and the mech were suppose to be realistic as in can be seen in real life.
In the first episode, I couldn't remember the character names, I no idea what was going on or what the plot is and the overall mech were ok but not groundbreaking.
Ok I did watched 5 more episodes but each time I watched it, it was total boredom. The only highlight was that the ending song was interesting (different to what I heard in anime ending songs).

Actually, I had a hard time getting into Resident Evil 4. A friend of mine convinced me to give it a try months ago, and I couldn't get over the controls at all. To me, the fact that Lyon Kennedy, a trained FBI agent, zombie-killing veteran and all-around coolguy couldn't move and shoot at the same time was a massive deal breaker, both in terms of my immersion and gameplay.
Fast forward to yesterday when I beat the game. The same fiend threw the game at me while wailing, "Give it a chaaaaance!" So I did. And I loved it.

I told a friend to listen to any Aphex Twin song, because I love pretty much his whole discography, and then he went and freaking listened to Ventolin.

Ventolin has an enormously loud very-high-pitched metal-on-metal sound running through the upper register for the WHOLE SONG. It's the most hated Aphex Twin track by his fans, even. It took a while to get him to try again.
