Baby Hedgehog with some odd stuff on it

So I found the little hedgehog in my garden, and it was kinda dazed and lost. So I moved it under a bush where I'd seen its mother. When I picked him up (gloved my hands and stuff) I saw he had some wormy maggot things in concentrated area of his under carridge. He also has all this white stuff in his spines. Plus there were flys around him.

It's not dead, it was moving and breathing.

Just wondering what those things are.

Just had a quick google and found this:

Maggots White or creamy wriggling worm like creatures, seen on hedgehogs with wounds or that are cold and have grown from the fly eggs. Once fly eggs have hatched into maggots, it is often too late for the hedgehog and it will need VERY URGENT Veterinary attention. You can use the same basic treatment as for fly eggs but get to a VET or Wildlife Rescue centre IMMEDIATELY.

Obviously I haven't seen this poor bush pig but this sounds similar to what you describe.

Sounds like he's fly blown, infested with fly larvae. The white stuff is probably the eggs from whence the maggots hatched. They're not beneficial at all.

WaitWHAT sais it pretty well.
Put him/her out of his/her misery, I guess it's better for the hedgehog too to go quickly without pain than having maggots eating it up alive.

Even though I would suggest putting it out of its misery asap if it looks that bad, I would take it to a vet to have it checked out/put down just in case. Either way, that's a terrible way for something to die, poor little thing.

God Blow Flies are a nightmare for any animal. We had a sheep get infected about two years ago, and while we managed to save it with constant cleaning and insect killing shampoos, it was one of the most disgusting jobs I've ever done.

Get it to a vet ASAP or if it appears to be beyond help then euthanising it personally would be kinder.

This is the most horrifying thing I've read all week.... What a horrible fucking world we live in.

That poor creature... I'm sad now. Hope it went quick. If it isn't dead already, kill it. It doesn't deserve to be in that much pain, maggots crawling all over it's organs.

I once found some baby mice behind a dryer after their mom got killed by a trap. I was so ethically conflicted as I didnt have anything to kill the mice cleanly, but they were obviously going to die, so what was the point in letting them squeek (oh god the squeeking) for their mom. I put them outside with some water and some food hoping for the best. After work they were gone, probably killed by something horrible. Now I'm even more sad

This saddens me because hedgehogs are freakin awesome! From what ive read they are quite prone be being diseased and infected with God knows what. I suppose this is is just another example of brutality of nature.

Rest in peace little hedgehog. May your days be spent snuffling through the undergrowth, growing fat off berries and insects in the great forest of the sky.
