I got empire total war back when it was released and i had a computer i was not able to connect to the internet... ergo no steam, ergo i was told there was no way to play the game. game returned, HotFezz8 gutted, story over.

its a bit later now, and i've got a computer i can connect to the internet... as this is my first time approaching steam ive got a couple of questions...

a) is there any need to pay if all you want to do is play the game you just ****ing bought?

b) how easy is it?

c) (and most relevantly) how safe have you all found it? is it easy to handle? is it a nuisance? (is that how you spell nuisance?) is there anything it helps to know before hand?

cheers in advance :)

1.) You can add non-steam games.

2.) Pretty easy I say.

3.) I'd say it's safe.

Well if you returned the game, I assume you've gotten the money back. And, sorry dude, sounds like you're going to have to re-buy it, but then again I'm spit balling here and have used steam only two times

a) No - everything's free unless you actually buy a game from them,

b) Very easy, and a joy (as much as any thing like it can be) to use

c) No security problems for me, account hackings are there but I don't think they're overly prevalent and you can get them sorted out if you send a kind word to Valve

It's miles better than Live and (from what I've heard on this one) PSN.

I've been thinking about it too so I'll be interested in seeing this thread as well.

So the only thing I can answer is this: Yes, that's how you spell nuisance.

A) Its's free

B) It's pretty easy, I've had some trouble, but it's not bad.

C) Yeah it's safe.

I'd like to say I think Impulse is better, but that's about it.

a) is there any need to pay if all you want to do is play the game you just ****ing bought?
If you buy a steam game the game is added to your steam account and then you can play it. There are no hidden fees, there are no monthly fees, there are no service charges. If you buy a steam game, it adds to steam and you play it, the end. The steam client itself is free too.

b) how easy is it?
If you can understand sorting a list by name then you're pretty much set. Games are listed as installed and uninstalled. If you want to install a game you right click and click install. It then downloads, once it's finished you can play it.

c) (and most relevantly) how safe have you all found it? is it easy to handle? is it a nuisance? (is that how you spell nuisance?) is there anything it helps to know before hand?
I love steam. I've found it quite safe, just be smart with your account name and password, never give either to people and you should be fine. Not much to know before hand, just make sure you write down your account and password or email it to yourself or something, you don't want to lose that :)

Additionally, you can set steam to offline mode if you're going to be without internet for awhile. Also, if you're at a friends house/parents or have multiple computers you can just login to steam on those computers and download your games there too. So long as you are logged in you can play your games.

It also has mad deals on it, especially this week (which is pretty much over though).

a) steam itself is free, it's the games you pay for. if you bought a game that requires steam, it'll add it to your steam games on install (iirc anyway, i did it with the orange box a few years ago). if you bought a game that can be played without steam, you can add it into steam post-install. you only pay for the games you download.

b) super easy.

c) i've never had any problems with them at all safety-wise.

steam is lovely, really. since the orange box, i've only bought two PC games that weren't through steam: mirrors edge (because it wasn't on steam) and world of goo (name your price sale).

If you've already the bought the game in a store all you need to do is register it on Steam, that's free. If it requires Steam to play the game will probably auto update to the latest patch before you can play, which can be a pain but there's nothing you can really do about it.

Steam is free to download and doesn't charge you a subscription, but you do have to buy a game if you want to play it. Once it's bought you can install it to any computer as many times as you want, but can only play it when logged into your account.

Also, a lot of games on Steam have demos, if you aren't sure if it will work, track down the demo and play that first, they're usually free.

b) how easy is it?
Pretty easy, when you buy a game Steam installs and updates it automatically. You just have to wait for it to be finished. Steam updates itself automatically as well, which is pretty handy.

Steam is a pretty stable system nowadays, it was kind of crash prone to begin with but it's mostly reliable now.

In use it's my favourite pc gaming portal. You get a server browser with internet, favourites, history, spectating and friends. Pretty much does what it says on the tin and pretty easy to use.

The friends/group system is easy to use, works like a cross between Xbox live and facebook, but geared towards getting you playing.

c) (and most relevantly) how safe have you all found it? is it easy to handle? is it a nuisance? (is that how you spell nuisance?) is there anything it helps to know before hand?
Never give out your password ever, I've never had my account broken into since 2004 when it opened, so it's pretty safe. Just again NEVER give out your password, even if it's to 'Valve' don't do it, if Valve want to do something with your account (this happening is exceptionally rare) they don't need your password, they have a masterkey so to speak.

Also never click on 'get game X free with steam' links on the web. If any freeplay sessions are coming up, they will be announced well in advance on Steam and automatically appear in your my games list when the event takes place, if that doesn't happen it's fake.

As long as you apply common sense it's a safe system to use.

My only serious problem with it is that you can't get refunds or sell games on. If you buy a game on it it's yours and that's an end of it. It's not a huge problem but it's something to be aware of before you commit to buying games, especially if you're not sure they'll work on your system.
Hope that's useful to you.

~edit: Regards your Rome: Total War. You will most likely have to pay again, since you took the game back to the store there is a high chance the cd key is now registered with someone else. If that's happened Steam will make you buy your own copy before you can play, don't try a keygen, it will get found out sooner or later.

Steam is completely free, there are no service charges of any kind, the only thing you pay for are the games, case closed.

b) how easy is it?
If you know how to turn on your computer, get on the internet, and have a very basic idea of how to buy things off the internet using a simple shopping cart mechanism.

c) (and most relevantly) how safe have you all found it? is it easy to handle? is it a nuisance? (is that how you spell nuisance?) is there anything it helps to know before hand?
I have never had problems with Steam, it is very secure, and overall a great program.
cheers in advance :)

I gotta ask, why is the title of this thread "baby wants to ask about steam."? I'm quite curious.

I've had steam for a couple of months now. I see it as a PC version of Xbox Live, where its basically a central program that handles your friends list, chatting, and playing online. It's safe (I've never had a problem with it) and has a manageable memory footprint (right now its running in the background consuming about 30MB).

I love steam. I check the store page almost every day to check for the occasional rediculous $5 sale. I've seen Bioshock, Assassin's creed, and STALKER Shadows of Chernobyl all for $5 to name a few.

Just a tip, do not respond to IM's from random people and do not click any links in their messages. Often they have keyloggers or trojans in the message that are meant to steal your Steam account info.
