I've basically given myself an amnesty on my backlog and expunged all the titles I meant to play but wasn't genuinely enjoying. It's brought my backlog to a more healthy, less intimidating level. That said there's still a few...

Demons Souls
Dark Souls
Borderlands 2
Xcom
Starhawk
The Walking Dead
Metal Gear Solid 3
Gears of War 3

Steam broke me. It just broke me. It would take me years to clear out all the stuff I've bought and never actually played. I really appreciate the achievement metagames they do for the winter and summer sales, because it encourages me to install a game and play it for at least a couple of hours. There's a lot of games I've only played to that achievement, and then never quite got back to.

But the crown jewels of my backlog are two Wii JRPGs, Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story. I bought them. I preordered them. I don't own a Wii.

One thing that backlogs ruin for me is the initial hype and excitement of waiting to purchase a game and playing it when I get my hands on it. Often I'll get excited for a game buy it and put it on my shelf with the intentions of getting back to it when i've finished the games i'm currently playing. But all to often by the time I do my attention is on something else so it never gets played.

I've been trying to work off my backlogs, but those sales man...

I used to have huge backlogs of games spanning more than 30 titles, it was nice to have all those titles to go to but kinda a waste as I rarely touched my backlog.

Ever since I started working at CeX I sell anything I don't play for more than a few days as I know I'll be able to get it again at any point.

I've been working on bringing my backlog down quite a bit lately and thankfully only bought one new game in the steam sale and er 5 on gog.com. The main problem for me is humble bundles. I can't resist them, especially as they help charity but then the games just pile up even more.

I hang onto a lot of games for reasons mentioned above. I worry about availability and also sometimes I just plan on getting back to them for review purposes or play, like with uncharted 1-3.

I have quite literally over 100 games that I have not completed yet. I hold onto them mostly because some of them are fairly hard to find, and for some reason, they sell for a lot of money.

The other reason I hold onto them is because I go back to a good many of them from time to time. Even ancient games like Total Annhilation, Dark Forces, X-Wing, and Dune 2 still get play time from me on a fairly regular basis. I suppose that I consider it a part of the hobby to maintain my collection.

Being mainly a jrpg fan , means my backlog isn't as big as most people . Since this generstion jrpgs have been lacking . So it actually gave me time to playtrough and reduce my backlog. And since jrpgs tend to be on the longer side (20-50 hours depending ) that's a good thing . I decided two years ago that i will finish any game i start , whether i like it or not , that helped me resuce it considerably , since in my backlog i count games i never finished . I play for story , so if i haven't finished the story , i haven't finished the game . Went from 50 unplayed games to 15 right now ( including the new game i bought ).

I still have to finish Catherine, I do this with literally everything, I have an anime open in my tabs for weeks at a time and i'm still winding my way through Medaka Box. Granted I know I could breeze through any manga since my reading speed is super fast and there's not much in the way of words per page.

I actually plan to leave weekly released manga for a month or so then read 5/6 of them at once over 20 minutes.

Oh and Rookie decided to gift me a few things on Steam (thanks!) then I bought Mount & Blade on his recommendation, he gifted me Awesomenauts and I went and got the new Magic 2013 game plus the expansion decks. Oh then I bought the Magic game on 360 as well... My friend and I had a miscommunication. I assumed that since it's Microsoft we're talking about they wouldn't match Steam's legendary sale prices. Well shit.

I'm decently going through BlazBlue: CS' story mode, I think i'll have to redact my statement over fighting games always having terrible stories. After Soul Calibre 5 who could blame me?
