I don't really need backup internet names, because I stick to fairly unique ones that are extremely unlikely to be taken. For example:

YeOldeSierra: Previous username on the internet and on my Xbox 360. If I have an account made before September 2008 or so, then it more than likely has this name. It relates to my favorite car (Ford Sierra - no, I don't know why either), and also a group of friends and I used this prefix.

xMP44x: Links to my Xbox profile's new Gamertag. xMP44x Paul, but I drop the Paul on the internet to make it shorter. It looks fairly unique too.

If I can get an 'original' username though, I'll go for that. For that reason I occasionally try the name 'Blitz' or 'Paul'. Normally though it's one of the first two names I use.

I haven't really had that problem but if it does happen i usually go with a name from whatever Game im currently playing or Manga im currently reading.

If my name is taken, I start breaking it down (Crimson5, 5pheonix, crimsonpheonix), and if all those names are taken, I go with Shroudedwraith.

I have many names I use in different places, for example, I used to be called Wasder here, but I never used it anywhere else. Or TRTBA, which I've never used elswhere.

I dislike using the same name, for a few reasons, on of which being that on a forum a while ago, everyone just assumed I was a girl because of my avatar (Meryl from Metal Gear Solid), and I couldn't be bothered to correct them. Meeting someone from there could be awkward.

My name is my own: I created it myself. Thus, it is very rare that the name "Thaius" is already taken. But if it is, I just add the last name. So in some places I'm known as Thaius Tydane.

I use 0Soraryuu0 and Metalwiring in Soraryuu isn't available, or if I don't feel like using it.

I'll add a "1" or a "2" to the end of "Marter" if it's taken.

The only other username I've ever used is "OdogforMVP", and that was on GameFAQs.

My username is never taken and the only reason i don't have it as my xbox like gamer tag is because i got it black listed when me and my dad chipped my original xbox.

If it is taken i guess i'd just use my last name, which is my nickname anyway.

I hardly use my real name for anything other than "official" stuff, and have another username that I use far more often. I doubt it's taken here, and dunno why I used this username, really.

As you may guess from my current handle, I usually pick something off the top of my head when I arrive at a site. This has caused trouble with not being able to REMEMBER my own handle, but I rarely run into duplicates.
