I would have done what you did. What's a Facebook anyway? People like that are just looking for handouts and aren't good people. They deserve your ire and they're most commonly hated by everyone they meet so you're not in danger of losing any business.

OT: I had a similar experience today. One came in while I was facing my store and first thing out of their mouth was "can I get some fucking service over here?!". My first choice of response was, "No, get the fuck out." But I kept my cool, I smiled, greeted him, started my way, ignoring his next taunt as I made my way to behind the counter. The next thing out of his pie hole was a claim that we'd violated him anally in every encounter he's ever had with our store, hated us to the core, and deserved massive discounts for everything he chose to buy. Again I ignored him, offering him no special benefits except for the advertised ones.

I kept wondering, "if he's never been satisfied with the service, why does he keep coming here?" then it hit me. He treats our employees like shit so they'll be extra polite to him and cut him deals where he especially doesn't deserve them. I then proceeded to hit on his girlfriend while he was off to the ATM machine and continued to flirt with her when he came back. He was either too thick to notice, or too engaged with his own ego to care.

After several more verbal abuses he spent well over $100 on gifts for himself, left his g/f with me who gave me a "gift" in the back room. She gave him a sloppy kiss on the cheek when he came back with a large meal from the food court for himself and a half empty bottle of water for her and I swear a strand stuck to the side of his mouth.

That kept me chuckling the rest of my 9 hr shift and will definitely keep me happy on the job for a good while longer.
I hope you asked for her number.

OT you did the right thing. Keep up the good work.

I work a coffee shop as the night manager and had this exact same thing happen to me. This guy was pissed of that the grill for the sandwiches was shut down for the night because we had been having problems with it. He threatened with facebook and wanted his money back for the drink, it was some kind of latte that I forget right now.

I told him 'no' and he started to get pissy with me. I told him 'I have the right to remove you from the building, using physical force if needed. I encourage you to complain online, and in person tomorrow with the owner if you would like. In fact, I'll help you write a complaint to the newspaper if you want, because anyone that can't understand how to use manners or realize that shit happens, I don't want coming in here, and I don't want to work for.'

He starred at me for a bit a left really pissed off. He did talk to the owner the next day, and I was told not to swear a customers. Then I got a raise. Problem solved.

Yup, 28 pages of bashing annoying/stupid costumers
I remember that thread! I hadn't joined yet and got like seven or eight pages into it then decided to stop because I had been there for an hour or two just reading and laughing my ass off. Thanks for the link, I'll read it all again over a period of time.

Give them their money back. Sounds to me like you were the one being unreasonable. Never let a customer leave unsatisfied, even if they were being rude.
Definitely wrong,
Many customers are just assholes looking for freebies, thinking they might get some by yelling/swearing etc...I see it at least once a week that a customer tries to steal from the company by blantantly lying and when caught red-handed (there's absolutely no record of your transaction sir) just shrug it off "oh i must have forgot!" "hey you're right i didn't buy it this week" some people even laugh it off with a "hey, it was worth a try!" after yelling at me that we're the scum of the earth, we stole from them, etc etc.

So no, the customer definitely is NOT always right, and some customers are just plain thieves, the kind that no sane company would ever want any business from.

Yeah I would've done the same. One customer doesn't really make too much of a difference, because lets face it Chinese food is brilliant anyway.

In high-school I worked as a cook for almost 3 strait years. Had 2 complaints directed at something I made and a 3rd about the burger meat.

1. Was a steak was a bit overcooked not a big deal was only like the 3rd steak I cooked since starting there was bound to happen. Apologized and remade the steak.

My actions for #2 and #3 were a bit different.

2. A lady complaint about a salad she took home. It took her 45 minutes to get home and it was winter time... I also manage to get out of her that she put it on the floor which would have had the heater directly pointed at it. Her complaint? the lettuce was wilting a bit... well after direct heat from a heater for 45 minutes what do you expect. I didn't deal with it but head cook did and told her to go get lost.

3. This one was a bit funner. A customer was giving a waitress a hard time about the burgers not being 100% beef. Being an Alberta restaurant 100% beef is a big deal. I was about to start cutting up a fresh slab of meat for steaks etc and told the waitress I'd be out after I finished with the meat. I smeared a bit of the extra blood from the cutting board across my apron, hung the butchers knife on my wallet chain (partly punk stage of my life with a chained wallet) and went and cut out part of the box that said 100% beef was packaged in. I then went out into the restaurant and proceeded to talk to the disgruntled customer. He stopped arguing, finished his meal with a smile and was back the next night for another burger.

Valid and trustworthy argument sure deal with it nicely, they are giving you a hard time doesn't mean you have to deal with it.

I would do the same, as well as give her a slight insult to really make her pissed. Then when she starts a hate group on Facebook, I will leave snarky, self-righteous comments.

You should have toyed with her first.

Commented on her image etc., then when it gets back to the OT, just smile and say "No".

Ever punched a woman in the face followed by a very aggressive and convincing threat? Me neither, but that little incedent would of made it so.

If she's eaten most of it, and it hasn't got sick from it, then she's got no case and you might be able to sue if she makes a problem.
Letting one get away with it might make others think you're a soft touch.

I would of wanted to give her a good slap. But you took the high road so well done.

I have to say I'm all for providing a good customer service (hell I work at customer services at primark) but what some people fail to see is when a "customer" becomes abusive they are no longer a customer but merely a "guest" (or thats what work calls them, I call them all sorts of names) and should be treated in the same way an ill mannered guest should be treated as in shown the door.
Employees have the right to work in a abuse free environment but of course should try and not to sink to their level. If I had it my way I'd give each employee a cattle prod to deal with these people but I'm told that's inhumane.

I work at my Chinese Take Away and tonight, one of my staff informed me that a customer had come in to complain about the food she bought the previous night was terrible and demanded her money back, after having eaten most of the food of course.

So I went out, gave a cheery "Hello =)" and before any discussion could take place I was threatened with:
"Do you want to lose all your customers and go out of business? I will write on my facebook how bad your take away is and then all your customers will leave for other take aways." Words to that effect.

Now... this take away has been in operation since 1972, back when my grandfather ran in, who passed it down to my mum, and then down to me. 30 years of being in business, didn't really see the threat.

Normally I'd just give them the money back and that would be the end of that, it's only £10 ($18) after all, but having been attacked with such a joke of a threat, decided against it. The customer asked, "So are you going to give me my money back or not?". To which I replied with a simple "No" and got the food thrown at me.

I'd like to ask, what would you guys have done?
Thanks.
Oh, the scary random woman will post it on her Facebook page that few people probably care about and ruin your business! Oh noes!

Give me a break... she is a great example of Small Name Big Ego [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmallNameBigEgo]. Even if a lot of people checked out her facebook page, I still can't stand how people equate internet fame with real fame and privilege, and let it go to their heads so much that they resemble a hot-air-balloon.

People like that need to look up "humble".

In any case, sorry to hear you got the remainder of the food thrown at you, but her paper-thin argument and sorry excuse of a threat made the whole thing smacking of just trying to get a free meal via being a jerkass. If there genuinely WAS something wrong with it, too, why didn't she just take it back immediately? If it was a case of her simply not liking chinese, why did she buy it? Well, okay, maybe she just wanted to try it out, but why did she blame YOU for HER not liking it? It's not as if you could magically change her taste or something.

Ugh...

I agree, too, there's something VERY wrong with a lot of people... and the worst part is, she isn't even a particularly egregious example, though she was certainly either being cheap or lazy.

...And now I have a sudden craving for egg-fried rice.

The only time I ever would ask for my money back is if I had been given no product or service at all for my money.

The one time I actually did get into a fit of rage was last month when my boyfirend and I decided to go and have our pictures taken by as a fundraising event for the school's Digital photo club.

So I we both get dressed up all nice and stand in line for a few minutes to have our pictures taken. finally we get there and the lady has what I can estimate is a $2000+ digital camera that probably had some 14-24 megapizels. We pose, have 36 pictures taken, then we're told to come back an hour or two later after they had uploaded all the photos and put them on disks.

SO I find myself in line an hour and a half later and when it's my turn they don't have a disk for me, or half the people as a matter of fact. It turns out that the teacher was too dumb to upload the pictures after each session and instead deleted the pictures of the first dozen and a half people to make room for the next group.

So I talk to the dumb ***** behind the counter and ask for a refund and am met with "I'm sorry, we can give you 5 of your $25 back," to which I reply with a prompt "No" and demand a full refund. Then the lady has the gall to say "Well I hope you'll be happy to know that the other $20 is going to support the photo clu-," before I grab her by the collar, pull her face to mine and shout at her that I would call the district and have them shut down for not providing me with a full refund and thus violating district consumer policies for school clubs. After getting some applause from the people behind me, I walk away with my $25, and the teacher ends up getting fired over winter break over this ordeal. Praise Haruhi she didn't have tenure.
