I usually play a demo for a game before i buy a game if there is one out. i once told my friend that i wasn't going to get RE5 since i didn't like the demo, to which he replied "but its just a demo". But isn't the point of a demo is to make you want to buy this game?I played the first Rainbow six Vegas game almost a year after came out and my first reaction after playing the demo was that i HAD to have to game. I had the opposite reaction when i play the demo for Too Human.

So tell me what you think fellow Escapist.

I never trust demos. I eather buy a game if i am certan that it is good, or wait a litle so my friends would buy it first and ask them is it worth it.

Or i download them. If its not shit, i usually pay for it.

Yeah you're pretty much right. Every now and then the demo isn't a very good way to judge the game but more often than not it is. Just because you don't have access to all the guns and gadgets or enemies or whatever, if you have a crappy time playing the demo chances are the full version won't do it for you either.

depends how close the demo release is to the games release, If its far apart then the game developers might get feed back from players of the demo and make it better, therefore making it a better game, however if the dates are closer and the demo is shit the can bet your ass the game is too. The old lie "Its Just a demo, Its Gonna be better"

Though to be fair the demo is just a small slice of the larger pie, could be just a bad part of the level, but if thats the case then the game developers are idiots and there game is probably shit anyway.

Dead Space. It was not a bad game, but the demo is SHORT. It almost not wanted me to play it.
I think demos are useful and can make the player think "what should I play next."

Well, the demo gives you a taste of what the real game is going to be like. So, really, if the demo sucks, the game is sure to be just as sucky

A demo is meant to give people a taste of the game, so they can make the decision to spend their money or not. If I don't enjoy the demo, chances are I won't buy the game. I don't have the money to buy games based on bad demos on the offchance they'll be good.

Red faction demo made me fall in love with it, i've played it so many times. Alot of my favourite games have been bought because of demos. I'm looking at you freelancer.

Not really. The demo for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix was terrible, as it only offered local versus. You couldn't even fight the AI! I didn't buy the game, though. But people say its really good.

You have to be able to decipher demos though. There are good demos of bad games that take the best levels (according to many people, Mirror's Edge did this, I disagree though). Then there are bad demos of good games (I believe RE5 did this, I didn't want to have anything to do with it, but I ended up buying it anyways and I thoroughly enjoyed it). Those are demos that I think of that leave a bad taste in your mouth, but really don't reflect the overall product. Then there are just bad demos of bad games. I don't think I really have to explain those ;D

The Tales of Vesperia demo proved that the demo can be complete shit but still be a good game. The demo puts you up aginst the one of the harder bosses and I couldn't beat it. I still bought the game as was completely happy with it.

Demos are horrible things I believe. It's like if you were about to buy a car and you simply get a picture of the front. Then you find out the paints scratched and the steering sucks. Graphics and control in the game respectivly lol

I play them, and read the review, if both give me a positive result, then I'll probably go out and buy.

Sometimes I will really enjoy the demo, but the reviews are so-so, but I'll still buy it anyway.

Come to think of it, if a game's got a bad demo, then I probably won't buy it, probably because I believe that the developer should choose the BEST part of the game for the demo, and if you don't enjoy the demo you probably won't enjoy the game.

I like the demo for the sole purpose to see how the game controls. If they controls suck, that right there leads me to believe the game will suck, and so I won't buy it. So I completely agree that bad demo = bad game. but a good demo does not always equal good game either. A bit of a conundrum.

That £45 quid is too much to risk on a bad game.

Or you could akin it to a test drive, since that's far more accurate.
You don't get to keep it for a week, but you get to drive it around a bit to see if it's for you. Makes sense to me!

I played the demo for Rainbow Six Vegas when it was first released. I got off the helicopter, took a few steps, killed 2 guys, and got killed by a stray bullet. I put down the controller, and went and bought the game right away. I love the series.

On topic: I'm all for demos. I think they are an excellent way to know, at least, the basics of a game and whether or not you could enjoy doing that for the next 8 to 15 hours (Average length these days). I've made quite a few purchases based of a demo reaction, and that process has not steered me wrong to date.

Demo's have always been rather trustworthy for me. I can easily determine is I will enjoy a game or not from demo's and they have saved me on more than one occasion as well. Besides, if the demo isn't enough for someone they can always RENT the game or borrow it.
