Bad Games That Should See Sequels

We've all seen them. Games that showed great potential, but fail to hit the mark, possessing various design flaws that relegate them to mediocrity. It's a shame to see franchises so promising being cut short by bad decisions, before the flaws could be fixed. While most will never get this second (or third, or whatever) chance to redeem themselves, it's interesting to imagine what could be. What franchises would you have continued despite a botched initial outing?

For me, I'd like to see a sequel to Brink. Here was a game that had a great setup. An interesting world with a cool backstory, interesting graphics, tons of customization, team based gameplay and multiple classes. The first person parkour could have added a new dimension to combat. Instead, we had a dodgy game that failed to live up to expectations. The single player was a joke, with no story to speak of and limited to simply running multiplayer maps with bots. The gameplay was unsatisfying on many levels even in multiplayer, which was the clear focus. The world went completely to waste. I'd love to see a sequel that ironed out the gameplay, and added an actual single player campaign. Actually use the backstory that was given in the game to create something interesting. I'd love to see a story in this universe.

Another game I'd love to see given a better sequel is Clive Barker's Jericho. A first person shooter with supposed horror elements (it's no the slightest bit unnerving, just grotesque) where you control a squad of supernatural soldiers against unholy forces. Each of the squad members has different powers and weapons, some of which are quite fun. The Sniper can fire explosive rounds and use her power to guide bullets in first person to take out multiple enemies in one shot. Another character can slow time and throw grenades, so you can slow down time and precision drop grenades at enemy feet. Hell, one guy as a FIRE DEMON that he sets loose on enemies to wipe them out. The plot also had some potential, with the squad descending through multiple dimensions created by God's rejected creation fighting supernatural horrors from various time periods. However, the game was absolutely wretched. The squad AI was horrific, and you spent more time reviving them than actually fighting enemies. In every level you fight the same few enemy types with only minor variation, and every fight was just you hanging back and shooting at constantly spawning enemies. If the game could fine tune the allied AI, add more enemy variety, and make fights more varied than a round of whack-a-mole, the squad powers and setting could make a cool game.

I'd like to see Gears of War 3 get a proper sequel, hopefully one that retcons the events of Gears of War 3.

But in all seriousness, I would like to see Dark Void get a sequel, I could imagine that all that it takes to fix it would be improve the voice acting/characterisation, extend it's length, improve it's colours and give it a final boss which requires more than just shooting it for 30 seconds for it to die.

I know its old but I would have loved to have seen KOTOR 2 done properly rather than that cut down excuse for a "story" and a KOTOR 3

Honestly... Brutal Legend.

I was really, really disappointed in Brutal Legend, but I feel like the potential for a great game is in there.

Drop the RTS elements, and make it a better open-world hack-and-slash game. Work on the humor a bit, Brutal Legend was a bit lacking some of the time. But most of all, don't make a demo that lies to me.

I felt like the world itself was really cool, and I liked Jack Black as the main character. I'd give a sequel a second chance, provided it looked improved enough.

Thats possible, I saw something a while ago that now that Double Fine has the rights to that alone (not EA) and the funding as one of the biggest and most popular (look how much they raised on kickstarter) independent developer studios, that he wants to go back and fix the problems with that game and release it on PC and if it sells well release a sequel. However he has no intention of dumping the RTS side of the game because it was part of the vision he had for the game. He wants to fix it and show gamers that it can work as a fully developed and integral element of the game

I don't care one way or the other as long as we get the awesome story and soundtrack that game had, i LOVE that game. I drive around for hours just playing "Angel witch" looking for serpents

I dunno, I GUESS that the RTS/Hack-and-Slash gameplay COULD work, but they'd have to be integrated together better.

Yahtzee's review of the game really hit the nail on the head for me. Like he says "Brutal Legend has a terrible habit of not telling you shit" and "it never occurred to me to use my car in battle". I never once thought about jumping into the RTS sections myself, I always hovered above it like I do in every RTS.

And I know that this kind of gameplay could work. Dungeon Keeper 2 had this sort of thing going on, with it's pseudo-RTS gameplay, and a spell that let you take direct control of certain units. I used the HELL out of that spell in the game, so I know it's possible for me to logically think to do that in situations. It just never entered my mind to do so in Brutal Legend.

They weren't bad, but buggy: Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines and Alpha Protocol. These games were good but had buggy releases and some unfinished parts. It's worth mentioning that VTMB actually has a fan-made patch that fixes a lot of problems and restors some missing content.

These games deserve sequels. But publishers don't see potential, they see just the bottom line.

You might like this one:

It adds a lot of missing content and makes the story much more coherent.

I don't know if I can think of any games like that. I'm more of the opinion that there are game companies that did REALLY GOOD games that then tanked.

Like CLOVER. WTH Capcom?

Id love to see a real condemned 2, and not the current thing that takes what was cool about the first game and dumps black goop all over it. Seriously, it felt like that game had separate teams of writers that made to completely different games and at the last minute shoved them together into one "story"

Strike Suit Zero.

The story was ok, action was ok but the camera was horrible as it was really hard to control. But the premise was great imo, possiblity of a mech vs planes with each having their own strengths and weaknesses. If they managed to make everything much smoother and multiplayer i see it becoming a very big cult hit, especially the gundam fans who cant get translated ports.

I don't see how the camera was horrible, it was either 3rd or first person and was always right where you wanted to aim. Personally I loved it, it just needed to be longer.

Darkstar One. It was decent, with good ideas and alright execution. Could/should be so much more though.

Splatterhouse 2010.

I LOVED this game, but I can admit that it has some BIG flaws. Load times were horrendous, the first 2 levels SUCKED, the combat could have used some more variety, splatterkills became overly repetitive with only 1-2 animations depending on the monsters you were fighting, the side-scrolling sections had REALLY bad physics that could lead to many unnecessary deaths, the final level wasn't as climactic as it should have been and a few others besides.

Still a VERY fun game, but I would love to see another with more polish.

The camera for the jet/fighter/bomber was ok. But when you started trying to look for different targets it would sometimes accelerate and decelerate (for me) which made it difficult to shoot at the faster planes.

With the mech though it was really stiff in that it took alot of work to move it, but when you did it would jump which again made it harder, especially considering each attack uses up part of the mech bar.

Its been said already but Alpha Protocol! Though I doubt this will happen! Obsidian & Sega didn't exactly have the bet relationship while that game was being made!

I did like the story & rpg stuff (what obsidian does best), I hated the combat and terrible gameplay!

Agreed! Loved Splatterhouse! Thought the humour was very good & the original trilogy as an extra was a great touch! If the combat had more variety, they fixed the camera (difficulty was challenging enough), then I would eat up a sequel!

Binary Domain.
"What's that Alcamonic? Looks like a cheap Mass Effect ripoff!"
You sir, could not be more wrong. It has a great story and setting with likable characters. Also the combat is fun. Friendly AI is at times retarded however, but things like this could be vastly improved upon.
The ending bloody demands a sequel!

I'm here to lead the charge for a follow up to Too Human. It had an interesting premise marred by terrible execution. The developers also fell in to the "we're making a trilogy!" pit except they seem to be the only ones who never made it past the first game.

I want my techno-viking trilogy

Definitely loved Alpha Protocol despite how buggy it was and how much more it could have been. Just the amount of changes you could make to the story and how that all was set up was great and depressing that few games have used those ideas.

Agreed. There are so few open-'world' space flight games (especially on console) that you'd think someone would fill that niche.

Actually with the mech if you hold down shift it auto targets new enemies, so you can go though a whole fighter or torpedo group really fast, although sometimes it does like to target things outside your range, really I stopped using the gun on the mech and just used the missiles to destroy huge numbers of enemies at a time. Do you use a pad or the mouse?
